When I use my GPS the navigation view is always set up in "map mode". I guess I like this because it mostly closely resembles the paper maps that I'm used to (and like so much). So how about you? What do you use and why?

3D for me! I like to see what's coming up, and always has the right perspective. I tried the normal map setting, but didn't like it.

2d map mode with North up.  Heading-up seems somehow lazy, and it takes away your overall understanding of where you are.

+1, on my Zumo 550.

I like to know my orientation, and I like to zoom in and out with reckless abandon and never lose that perspective. 3d mode... never could get used to it. I tried. Not for me.

It's great we have the choices in most of the modern products.

Ain't it the truth. At least there's a choice. My wife's car has OnStar. What a POS! No detail, it'll only reroute once or twice, then gives up, leaving you on your own unless you call back. I can't wait 'til they try to get me to re-up the subscription.

Same here on the SP 2610, but the image on my 2730 and 2820 is more 3D like and in color.

2D and set the zoom out for the most detail to find twisty roads.  In cities I just tend to put it on a stats page or the mp3 and ignore.

I'm in the map mode, heading up camp --

3D just seems to cluttered to me (and also a bit too toylike -- I know, I'm a Luddite).

heading up as, most of the time when I'm using it, I'm in the thulies, and don't really care about cardinal orientation ('sides, I generally "know" where North is).

I keep it in 3D mode 99% of the time. It just seems intuitive to me. I only use 2D when I want to scroll around the map to see what's around me.

2D mode with heading up for me.

This is what I did when I had a GPS. It took a while to get used to since I like paper maps and the "north up" option seemed the right way to go. The "heading up" option requires a little less thought when translating what your seeing on the GPS to whats coming up. I tend to miss fewer trail crossings that way. The only problem is when you stop, the arrow reorients itself northward causing some confusion if you're lost and trying to figure out where to go next.

3d, top as direction of travel for short range.  For longer trips map, still direction of travel up.  Paper for when I'm lost.

2D w/current direction up.

3D is nice, but in all seriousness, you can't really see your turn options at a glance with the way the screen shows the streets.

I always preferred the 2d track up on the bike.

In the car I like 3-d in the city so I can see on and off ramps better, but 2-d track up when away from the city.
