So if he is an Amish mechanic, is he allowed to start it to see if it's fixed?

Snow totals are all over the map depending on what source you use. I've seen 6 to 8 inches, 6 to 18 inches, and 12 to 24 inches predicted for the philly area.
One thing they all agree on is the high winds and the start of the storm being a mix of sleet and rain. Wheeeeeee!!!!

Yes. He even has one of those things called a phone at his shop. My snowblower looked dainty next to the heavy machinery and medical equipment that was there for him to fix. I know people outside don't understand, but Amish tradesman are some of the best in the area.

Here's the one that has my attention: I love the what if stuff.
A new post is in progress to discuss updated liquid and snowfall numbers. With BWI Airport as representative location for Central-Northern Maryland, the team projects ~1.5 liquid x 16:1 snow ratio = 24.0" by midnight Wednesday. We are concerned the ratio fpr areas north and east of BWI may actually end up at 18:1, as we have underpredicted ratios by 2" on 3 previous storms.

That they do. I'm familer with their woodworking skills, I just was not aware they work on engines and such. Special waiver from the Amish Pope?

Engines seem to be ok on their farms and in their homes, AFAIK, just not cars or tractors. I often see Amish horses pulling gas-powered farming implements. I'm really not an expert on which bishop allow what.

8:45 AM TUESDAY 2.9.2010 ULTRAKAHUNA UPDATE # 3: Professor Rapson was right, nothing like this has ever happened before, not even 1888, 1899, 1922 or 1958. If two blizzards occur along the I-95 corridor in one week, you will be living out history.
Due to the confused consternation over snowfall reporting at BWI airport, our team has selected the Maryland Science Center in downtown Baltimore as our new representative location for Central-Northern MD. At the center, the team projects ~1.5 liquid x 15:1 snow ratio = 22.5" by midnight Wednesday. We are concerned that ratios north and east of Baltimore into PA may end at 18:1, to account for our underpredicting of ratios by 2" on 3 previous storms.
TIMING & IMPACTS
ARRIVAL BY 10 AM central Virginia-West Virginia | 1 PM central MD
2-3 PM PA/MD line | 5 PM DelMarVa & New Jersey | Ohio? Snowing.
INTENSITY Intermittent until sunset, up to 3" per hour overnight.
West of the Bay: Blizzard conditions, with winds 35 mph+, banding and thundersnow. Winds will continue at 25 to 35 mph throughout Wednesday, creating power outages.
AMOUNTS BY 7PM WED
18-24" New Jersey | 12-20" Northern Delaware
16-22" Anne Arundel Co. to Frederick Co. to I-95 corridor to Philadelphia into southern and southeastern PA (Lancaster Co. east)
10-18" Upper Calvert Co. 6-10" Lower Calvery to St. Mary's
12-18" North MD eastern shore | 6-12" Lower MD eastern shore
8-14" Western MD - Northern VA - West Virginia

I lived there for most of my childhood - nothing about LI is a "wonderland".
And before you take offense, note that I now live in NJ. How low can I go?

The Amish crew who built my house rode in trucks to get there, but wouldn't drive them. They used air tools powered by a gas-powered air compressor and all had cell phones.
I think progress catches up with everyone.
As I understand it, it's not the tech that is taboo, it's the
temptations
that the tech provides. As I understand it, giving in to the temptations - whatever those temptations are - is the sin. If I understand what was explained to me.
So it's ok to use tech to become more productive, but NOT to slack off, become lazy or not master your trades (in this context).
I'm no expert... it was explained to me by the guy running the crew who was not Amish but works with them all the time.

My grandfather on my dad's side was Amish, Smoker is an Amish name, believe it or not. My mother was black bumper mennonite, until she met my dad. I think the only thing I took from either is my work ethics. I've never met a lazy Amishman.
