What an awesome month we had with my oldest son home. He's been stationed in England and hasn't been home for 2 years. He decided to come home to get his MD MC endorsement so he could take the MC Safety course on base. Granted January isn't the best time to ride in Maryland but what the heck I knew he could do it. One of his friends let him borrow a 250 Ninja for the month so he had an easy bike to learn on.

He took it easy around the neighborhood riding in the cold to get used to it. Next was a nice ride out to get some coffee the next day.

Then we headed out thru some nice back roads up to Middletown, MD to get some Gyros.

Well he took the 1st test and failed to follow instruction. He rode in the box for the 12 seconds then proceeded into the u turn box from the far side and made a circle instead of the u turn. Bummer as they made him turn the bike off and push it off the course. I guess they have the walk of shame in mind. No big deal since he could retake the test after a couple day wait.
Next try he touched his foot down twice during different parts of the test and they said he didn't get going fast enough for the accelerate and emergency stop test. Yep the walk of shame again. Now the pressure was on because he had only enough leave left to reschedule one more try. We hit a parking lot for a few days of slow speed practice now that we knew what the whole test was about.
Last Friday was his retest date and of course it was in the teens with a winter storm warning. We arrived at the MVA in Frederick around 11am and were greeted by "Joe Meathead". Apparently when we were there 2 weeks ago he was giving someone their car driving test and noticed that my son as he was coming around the building stopped to let me catch up as I was on foot. This guy said that I was supposed to be by his side the whole time and felt the need to make a big deal about it in front of everyone. We gave him the ol "yes sir" we understand and moved on. Kind of ridiculous but what ever it takes to get out of there quickly. Of course I wanted to give this guy a piece of my mind but oh well what can ya do. So my son pushed the bike across the lot and around the building this time just to satisfy this guy. Then we waited at the starting line for 20 minutes freezing. Finally the lady came out and took him down to the course.

He passed with no points off for anything!!!!!!  Bigok Well done my son! Now you can freeze all the way home with your license,  Bigsmile

Well sadly we had to take him to NJ to get on a hop flight back to his base. And to top it off I sprained my ankle at a gas stop on the way up so I'm on sick leave for a few days until the swelling goes down.

Congratulations to your son - glad he had a "window" in the weather that allowed for it.

What bike(s) is he considering?

He has a low mileage naked 03 SV650 lined up in England. We also got to go to the MC show and he got great deals on all his new gear. Bigsmile

Cool.  My first ride with my dad was about a 60 mile jaunt through the country and a freeway blast to eat sushi.  I'll never forget it and am looking forward to our first trip together to Savannah for St. Patrick's day.

My first big ride with my son (then 16) was November, 2006 with him on his Kawasaki EX500 Ninja.

We rode with two riding buddies of mine to the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in Fort Worth, 125 miles one way from my house.  We bracketed him on the ride up and back, this way he had three sets of experienced eyes keeping a watch on him.  He was pretty jazzed about it.

We attended again last November when the show was in Dallas.  This time he was on his Yamaha FZ1 and led the ride leaving out of Dallas, good times  Bigok.

Three boys means three bikes  EEK!.  Can't wait, for two of them it just might kill their mother, but that's the price you pay sometimes. (Gotta love ex's  Lol)
