Just saw this posted on another BMW forum, but it seems that BMW is starting a forum of it's own, specifically for owners.

You need your VIN # to register.

There really isn't much content yet, but hopefully soon.

Yeah, a friend of mine joined it and is playing around in there.

I haven't done so yet. We'll see.

That sounds interesting; I'll have to check it out.  I guess it's one way to keep all the sheep aligned Wink

I thought that was for the G-series: The XChallenge, the XPlorer, the XCountry?

I registered and am so far under impressed.  To me, it seems vague with too many dead ends.  Maybe I'm not going to the right places but with my extensive experience in navigating porn sites, I can usually find all the interesting nooks and crannies.  Maybe it will develop into something as it progresses.

New site looks like it could be interesting.  Can't wait to see the forum up and running.

Am I just being paranoid, or, does anyone else out there feel just a little bit nervous about putting their VIN out there, for anybody?

I'm thinking of the "Free Credit Card Strip Cleaning" machine scam.EEK!

Just wondering.

As this does not look like a phishing site, I feel pretty comfortable.
What are they going to do with my VIN? I mean, of what value is it? They aren't going to make fake green cards, or SS cards. Are they going to try to list it on ebay in a fake auction, maybe, but they could just as easily garner them from other auctions, so why co through the effort to create a nicely done phishing site?

Are they going to try to contact the local DMV (this is an int'l site, so they would have to have lots of contacts), then convince someone to illegally give them title holder info (assuming that there is a loan, which there is not always), then they can take this info and try to convince the lienholder of something? I really don't know.

I added my VIN #.

Just my view.

If someone wants to thieve a bike with a VIN, they can walk right up to the bike and look at it on the bike.

I would guess BMW is doing this as a PR move to learn first hand about likes, dislikes and to try and control it's market a little more. Market research if you will. The vin # just helps them to profile each of the members. Lets all join and do nothing but discuss BMWs inflated prices and see what comes of it. My guess is it would close down in short order.

I joined. Fancy interface I'm impatient even with high-speed Internet. Doesn't BMW know that only old guys ride their bikes and are likely to have simple dialup at home?   Embarassment

I didn't notice any bulletin boards or ways to search on bikes like your own, by gender, or region. Much as I like seeing photos of other Beemers, not sure what else the site is for.
