After the first few thousand miles of "break-in", the chain on my Sprint didn't need adjustment for almost 4,000 miles. Very high maintenance!
I haven't had to adjust the chain on the gsxr for 5k. A chain really isn't that much work. It sounds like you really have no idea what you want. Start by visiting a few dealerships to get an idea of where you want to go. That will help narrow things down a bit. BTW, I had a 94 GS500 3 years ago. That thing was reliable, simple and a great bike to learn on!
