AMA at Daytona Road Race and Supercross **SPOILERS**
«

March 03, 2010, 11:14:01 AM »
Its a new day with the
new
DMG which makes the latest version the
new, new
AMA Pro Racing. Decent-sized fields have assembled for both the American Superbike and Daytona Sportbike events. Daytona is a double header round this year for American Superbike sprint races. More racing is better, IMO.
Race winners and the championship in American Superbike are a toss-up for the first time in years and Daytona Sportbike promises the same thrilling competition we saw last year.
Remember to double check your DVR and VCRs (for anyone still lovin' the '90s). Daytona is always listed as
Daytona Bike Week
for some mysterious reason and using the "motorcycle racing" search term won't catch any of the racing at Daytona on many cable/satellite listings.
As always, I'm foolishly optimistic.

Ever the hopeful one, aren't we?
I find it hard to get charged up. Sure, the 200 will be shown on taped delay yet same day out here on the West Coast, but for chrissakes, it's obvious that everyone's interest is in the SuperBikes.
Yes, the big boys. We want to see the 1000cc 4s and 1098 twins duke it out in two, count them, two races. ZONK! Yet where are these races?

Pretty sure they're on Speed channel. Sat. night tape delay.

The
new, new
AMA Pro racing started things off with a rider meeting in Daytona. Racers felt that it was a positive, well organized meeting and that the DMG folks actually
wanted
feedback from the racers.
I certainly hope that maybe, just maybe, the new folks calling the shots recognize what happened last year and are willing to correct/change their way of thinking and managing AMA pro racing.

It,s hard for us to show much excitement this year. Neither rider has made the night show and last weekend at Alt. the van was stolen. Thanks God the the trailer was not hooked up or they might have goten it all!
I hope for a better turn out this weekend.

Character flaw.
No spoiler but it appears that .307 covered the first
five
finishers in today's ASB race.
Today's supersport race also had an incredibly tight finish.

Superbike and Supersport races are tape delay Saturday night after Supercross.
Same day delayed coverage for the rest of the season, supposedly.

Looks like Elena did well.
I wish DMG would throw its NASCAR weight around and get these races shown on SPUD in a timely manner.

The 848 is NOT a big bore V2. It is a good comparision. The 1198 is a big bore V2. The Buell is a big bore V2.
Personally I think Danny was riding conservatively.

Decent race (D200). Pit stops fucked it up for several riders. Aquino's got shit for luck.

Good race. Seemed more normal (in a good way) than last years fiasco. SBK & SSP races were apparently great as well (will watch tonite). Looking forward to attending the Road Atlanta round next month...

I watched all the races and gotta say I was pleasantly surprised, better than
I
expected.
A few of
my
observations,
Nice to see 6 bikes capable and dicing it up for a win, pretty much on par with WSB.
Tommy Hayden, why does he think he has to look like a clown, give the Halloween look a break.
I'm now starting to think, maybe Matt Maladin deserved all his number one plates, better rider than I gave credit for. (not all the bike)
I'm really anxiously awaiting to watch the next race,
IMO
it should give a
better
picture of whats ahead for the rest of the season....

Don't forget, they changed the rules too, so Tommy's Suzuki isn't the same bike as Mladins. They're almost supersport-spec bikes now, not the full-on Superbkes of yore.

His tire jumped out of the box while the camera was zoomed in on it.

Uh? Yes it was.
Negative... the 848 was designed for the middleweight sport bike class... where as the 1198 is solely
designed for rigors of WSBK racing...
Quote Ducati:
848
"Iconic features from its bigger brothers, such as the twin under-seat silencers, single-sided swingarm, Trellis frame and beautiful race bodywork, are all part of the 848's DNA. Its family resemblance assures that it is equipped with all the performance advancements of the Superbike family, while adding its own particular refinements to the middleweight sport bike class."
1198
The 'R' is a race bike, pure and simple. Its competition specification and superior components together with advanced electronics and race-proven chassis technology deliver a level of performance that empowers with confidence and capability. JUMP START No axe to grind here with eslick but who are they kidding.
His tire jumped out of the box while the camera was zoomed in on it.
He stopped again and then they got the green flag.
Last year they were using video monitors on the first several rows and calling jump starts if there was the slightest "pixel movement" when reviewing the video according to what I've read. It was controversial and unfair because a) they didn't have enough equipment or people to apply this system to the whole field and b) how do you define "pixel movement" anyway?
The rules were changed for this year to only call a jump start if the bike moves before the red light goes off
and continues moving forward
. Of course, there is vague "AMA Pro Racing will decide" language in the wording.
Eslick did stop moving forward and did not gain any advantage. He was fifth into the first turn on that start. I'm in the no harm, no foul crowd for this incident. Besides, if there is a red flag before the two laps are complete, the whole race is started again at full race distance. The red flag came out before the first half lap was complete. That lap never officially happened so there isn't much to penalize.

Negative... the 848 was designed for the middleweight sport bike class... where as the 1198 is solely
designed for rigors of WSBK racing...
So none of the 600 supersports are designed to be race bikes either?

The rule isn't to stay in the box. The rule is:

Page 20:
"Anticipation of the start is defined by the motorcycle moving
forward and continuing to move forward while the red lights are

Danny STOPPED before the lights went out so he is ok.

Admittedly, I'm not an expert on moto-racing but....
1. I thought start jumpers had to come in for a manditory pit lane drive-through? So AMA Pro is not the same as the rest of the world?
2. Why are the little bikes running the 200 and not the Superbikes?
3. Why are they running at night?
4. Why is this AMA crap so ass-backwards than everybody else?

I really appreciate the explanation. I was pretty cranked about the no call while watching -- not because I thought his one foot move had any effect on a 200 mile draft fest, but because it looked like another example of DMG's arbitrary rule book.
So, okay, it wasn't. The rule was specified ahead of time. My anger is assuaged.
On the liter bikes: I've always liked rooting for Zemke. I figured his career was pretty much over. That was really fun to watch.

2. Why are the little bikes running the 200 and not the Superbikes?
As noted above, they changed that a few years back, before DMG took over. It really was a safety issue. The liter bikes are just too fast and too heavy for 200 miles on the high banks. The riders started to talk boycott because they were convinced someone would die.
The problem now is that DMG still wants to pitch the very outdated 200 as "the most prestigious motorcycle race in America" (Sheheen obviously followed his instructions to say that over and over). And that explains why they keep trying to push the Daytona Sportbike class as the premier class -- first with last year's initial rule set, now this year by cutting prize money for the superbikes to near zilch and making the DS class the only one that might pay off for privateers.
Clearly, the fans, teams, and riders aren't buying into that. I don't expect DMG to give up, though.

Yes, thank you for the explanations.
I, too, was shocked to hear the announcers saying over and over again how prestigious the Daytona 200 is. Since when?
Maybe it was when it was held on the beach... Again, I apologize. I'm not a diehard fan of American racing (except the local guys).
It did look like a NASCAR race, though, with all the crashes.

DJ, in the late '60s and early '70s the 200 was just about the biggest motorcycle race in the world. The money, both prize and appearance, drew all the top racers and the bikes evolved from iron barreled Harley KRs and British Twins to Japanese 2 and 4 stroke GP bikes. Because it took place in early March there were no conflicts with other big events.
If you look at pics from that era you'll notice something else, too; there were people in the grandstands. Lots of people.

Yup.
When you could lure Agostini and Sheene from across the pond, you had sumthin. The Euros even tried their own variation with the Imola 200.
When the AMA changed over to production bikes, it lost its appeal for the Grand Prix riders, and it has never managed to recapture its past glory.
I always hoped they'd split it into two 100 mile legs and make it the opening round of the WSBK

You're welcome.
Another thing that must be pointed out. Just like in F1 of the same era when they raced at Watkins Glen those pay envelopes didn't contain traceable checks. Oh no, those fat parcels contained good old American cash. Lots of cash. The Euros loved coming to race in America.

does anyone know (for future reference) if they offered any sort of week-long or weekend pass to the track? With so much track and dirt racing, I'm thinkin that would be a good vacation trip. If there happens to be some spring breakers down there at the same time, it wouldn't bother me.

Not sure about nowadays Phoenix. Used to be we'd head down the week before, do some cornerworking for CCS, AHRMA etc, and we would be all set straight through to the next Sunday. The weird problem always was getting in for the motocross race, or something like that. Can't recall for sure, it was back then a 10 day straight fiesta...It's certainly a great vacation idea if you can manage all the traffic issues, the pirates, etc.

The Daytona SX....What used to be the best , most unpredictable SX outdoors was made predictable somehow.
The Daytona shorttrack....Ice racing on dirt tires. Drunken pirates in the stands. Great riders tolerating an impossible situation.
Best racing of the wknd... Big Buddhas 200 in, blown, nitrous hog vs. Beemos turbo Busa at 3AM out in the burbs with 6K pirates watching. Biggest crowd of the wknd. It was free and no one checked your coolers.

Yeah, I know only a fool quotes himself and I'm proving myself the fool once again. I deleted the 200 from my DVR but I was wondering if the jump was on the first, red-flagged start or the second start? I thought it was the first start, as stated above, but now I'm not sure. Anyone still have the race saved?

Best racing of the wknd... Big Buddhas 200 in, blown, nitrous hog vs. Beemos turbo Busa at 3AM out in the burbs with 6K pirates watching. Biggest crowd of the wknd. It was free and no one checked your coolers.
The real winners? Party store and bar owners.
I'd agree with your comments except the "nobody riders" part.

Larry, nice picture. What's that little white-ish wire that's attached to the front brake line?

I was wondering if the jump was on the first, red-flagged start or the second start? I thought it was the first start, as stated above, but now I'm not sure. Anyone still have the race saved?
2nd start...

Sorry dogboy but those 600 guys aren't NAME riders to me. Name riders who USED TO BE at the REAL Daytona 200 had names like Hailwood, Sarrinen, Agostini, Mann, Yates, Duhamel, Zempke,Spies, Roberts and rode BIG bikes. They also rode on hard tires in the hot Florida sunlight on big unruly bikes and without a slow down chicane in many cases. If you look at the top 10 this yr those guys would have been the bottom 10 5 yrs ago. Looks like the senior, vintage circuit is back too with Ashmead back at it. Amateur racing with a big paycheck and no factory involvement at all. That's how I see it. Maybe Eslick , Rapp, Herrin could handle a superbike at the back of the field behind the really good experienced riders.DMG picked the wrong class to showcase and the fans know it. A few pirates still show up to puke in the stands though and that will still keep it going for awhile.

The world is different now and its never going back. The series are too specialized now and sponsor contracts too important. No appearance money any more either. The IOM used to be part of the GP circuit and that is never going to happen again either. Motorcycle road racing today really can't be compared to the '70s.
BTW, there is plenty of talent in the field. Rapp was a top ten superbike rider not long ago.

At least we get to see the real talent in the world twice a year at Laguna and Indy including our own great riders on the Moto GP circuit. You are surely 100% correct in your statements dogboy. Daytona can not and will not ever be the same . I can't blame racers for going where the big $$$$ are either and that would be Europe.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the talent contending in the AMA Series. Yes, there are some old warhorses and some wannabes, but there are quite a few young and not quite so young racers out there making a living, somehow and sometimes just scratching by, but they're out there riding their asses off and if you pay attention you might be able to see it.
The old veterans once looked askance at some gap toothed kid from Modesto who wore Naugahyde racing suits and hailed from Lodi. I think his dad drove the local tow truck, or maybe it was his mother. Shit, you could never tell with that family. Anyways, what kind of World Class Racer could come out of this? The only thing you knew was that they cared for Kenny.

JeffN some good points....Everyone does have to start somewhere. Just not at the Daytona 200. You make an interesting point about KR but even the great KR did not race in the 200 as a Junior on a small bike. All of us know 600s are a joke when we have big bikes that should be out there with our BEST riders on them......Not some kid whose daddy has a Brazilian coffee plantation and 10 nice 600s and now can buy his way into a major race(or what used to be one). There is a reason there are no butts in those seats up there! Most of the real racing public is not fooled and will spend their money at Laguna or Indy or watch the Superbike series to see the best riders. The guys that won the 200 are backmarkers on a superbike. Yes, they will get better but not by staying on a 600 IMO.

Funny the best riders on the big bikes do not want to ride the big bikes in the 200. I wish I could find the quote from one of the riders last week talking about how the big bikes are too dangerous due to tire wear. The superbikes did run two sprint races at daytona this year. It was typical race weekend for them.

Macdiver...You are aware that MotoGP is going back to the 1000cc bikes in 2012? Does that tell you what spectators worldwide want to see? What mfgrs want to race? If racing were SAFE everyone would be doing it. The real problem at Daytona is not the tires or the bikes but that BANKED TRACK and TOO MUCH OF IT. Just too much load and G force. They need to make most of the track in the infield like Indy did. No other race track in the world (including Monza) has a G load like Daytona.

Buls4ever,
The 1000's do race at daytona. The 1000's's do two sprint races just like every other race weekend. MotoGP or World superbike do not have any endurance races why is one expected for AMA superbike? The Daytona 200 is an oddball race which is now run on oddball bikes, what's wrong with that?

Yup, I agree macdiver. An odd race on an odd track NOT the "Greatest spectacle on two wheels" as advertised by DMG/Speedvision ad dept. Not even the greatest race in America.
