I can see 140 on a certain piece of road.

Who else opens it up?

I don't recall going more than around 100 on the ST. Even then it wasn't for very long.
I don't know if the KLR would have broken the ton, I regularly got it to 80 or so on the highway.

A KLR would do about 90. I know because my XT600 said so.

Let's get our top speed freak on.

GPz900R Ninja. Indicated pegged and still running. Prolly about 155. Dude riding a K100 something-or-other told me I was walking his ass, and he had his wrist pinned and the Kawi was saying bye-bye.

Let's get stupid and brag.

I usually back it off after breaking the ton.  I think my bike is good for 140mph, but I haven't been there.

Generally 80 - 90. I entered Ct. Tuesday at 110 left at 100. It's rare but it does happen on occasion.

Those are good cruising speeds, but do you ever really open it up?

I usually stop at 30 mph over the speed limit. That hopefully prevents a "meet the judge" if I ever get caught.   I've crossed Nevada at 100 mph,  but usually around here, 80 is a fast cruising speed, and enough for a  big performance award.

What is your definition of "regularly"?  Miss Busa will do over 90 in first gear, but she normally stays near the posted speed limits due to her owner's lack of funds to pay the tickets.  She has on a few ocasions found where the speed limiter is set and the GPS says hers is set right around 186.

I've been to 140 a couple of times.

On one bike it was a scary, idiotic thing and I can't believe I didn't piss myself.

On another bike it was a much smoother, much more controlled pace where I had to convince myself I really *was* going that fast.

My current Guzzi has it 120 indicated trying to beat a line of trucks while merging onto I-95 out of a rest stop.

usually I'm in the 80s.

All out speed isn't really very exciting to me, at all. Acceleration is my drug of choice.

But I will admit that both my old Vmax, and my present FZ1, have seen speeds in the low 160 mph range a couple of times, just out of curiousity, to see what they'd actually do.

I have yet to take the Sprint to triple (semi-pun intended) digits, not for want to do so, but more for finding a stretch where I'd feel comfortable doing so.  I've really only done commuter style riding so far which has me crusing ~70mph.

There are a few roads here in SoCal that are so remote and so straight that we (as a group) almost always do max speed runs when we get out there.  I generally don't get much over the upper 150s (gps indicated), but that's because I have a naked bike.

Regularly seen?  High 70's/low 80's for me, during a.m. commutes.  The fastest I think I've even seen on a speedo was about 142, on my FZ1; and that's an optimistic device.

Just last weekend Redfox and I got yanked for riding 20 over in PA (we were actually going a little faster than that) and we somehow escaped with only a verbal.  Don't care to push me luck further.

I'll crack the ton every week or so during riding season, usually on a stretch of road leading north out of Chicago.  I've gone 130 or so (140 indicated) on an empty stretch of suburban I-80, but there wasn't enough wind protection (I couldn't lay down on the tank coz there was a bag there) to keep me from being pushed back out of my seat.  So that was a one-time deal.

Saw 95 on the RR passing an SUV Tuesday.  Didn't need it, but it gets there so damn quick...

Rarely anything above 100 anymore, but occasionally the road is clear and the conditions are right and the inner hooligan wins the argument.

Back in the day I regularly saw top speed on the Hurricane 600 or FZR1000.  No doubt 150+ is a rush like none other.

Triumph Demo Days two years ago were based at PIR and we were allowed on the track for four 'supervised' laps....'supervised' as in 'don't pass the lead rider'. The last two laps were at a rather spirited pace, so I saw 138 at the end of the straight. Good enough for moi.

Street riding, I might blast up to 100 for a nanosecond on some back roads every once in a while, but I'm not a 'straight line speed' guy...

Even up here at 5k', I've had the sprint up to almost 140 indicated. Not regularly, for I have bad performance award karma and I'm with some of the others; fast, smooth corners are more fun for me that straightline speed when my brain can go 'but what if a bunny hops out'....

Regularly, lately, within 15 of the limit.

The 'tard ... less fast. Up to 100, on the Interstate, but nothing excessive.

I mostly tend to ride at 70 - 75mph everywhere, highways (avoid if possible), 25 - 30 mph backroad, 45 mph secondary road, whatever. It just seems to to be a nice "mellow" pace, but sometimes you just have that voice in your head. If I choose to listen I might wick it up to 120 - 130ish, but not for long as I fear THAT ticket. That being said I know that the Duke 2 will do 109 mph indicated, that's all, no more, she's all done. The gsxr on the other hand, I have not topped it out ever. I guess I'm just a big puss-puss.

Regularly? On the street? Maybe 90. There's just no upside to going double the speed limit on the street. I think I have been up to ~130 once on an open road, but really didn't care for the general feeling of what bad shit might happen. On the track, not a concern.

Back in the late 80's when I commuted from Lancaster to near Reading PA I wound out my GPZ 550 .  I think it indicated 130, no doubt optimistic.
A couple of years ago I had a friends R1 for a week. There are some back roads in Eastern Lancaster County where 120 is easily attainable at which point prudence arrived.
I doubt I'll ever try to peg the ZZR but  I will be using those same back roads for my work commute ...........so to answer the question ....no, not since I've "matured".

Hey, 80 IS top speed on my XT.  Bigsmile

And it takes a LONG time to get to that speed!  I think my top speed ever on the XT was 130km/hr (80mph) & that was a flat stretch of highway, no headwind, tucked down as flat as I could get.  (Of course, the speedo's ~10% off, so....)

My top speed on the KLR prior to making it a 685 was ~145km/hr (90mph), whilst holding my mouth right & NOT short-shifting from 4th to 5th.  That was also on the track with nothing on the bike but me in leathers (not even a front fender).
Since the 685 kit went in I accidentally hit 160km/hr (100mph) with full touring luggage during a pass - the bike could have done a little more but I backed down Embarassment overgrown dirt bikes aren't really meant to go that fast.

My Monster Shrug I'm not really that speedy of a rider, I'm working on cornering faster, not straight line faster on that bike.

I've seen 135 on the Tiger, and was really surprised at how stable and controlled it felt.

I've seen 130 on the VFR, and because I'm a big oaf and it doesn't have that much protection above the level of, say, my nipples, I felt like I was 3 seconds from being blown backwards out of the saddle.  So now I keep that around 100 tops and even that can feel hairy.

But generally, a 100-110 run is a once or twice a summer "yee-haw" kind of thing, in good weather and no traffic.  And preferably after 4-5 drinks for that invincible feeling... (I keeed, I keeed).

Straight line speed doesn't excite me.  I think I've had my Strom up to 100 maybe once or twice, just for kicks.  Only had the SV up to 80 or 85, even though it will supposedly do 130.  I much prefer getting to lean over in curves.   Thumbsup

Here in the East, 90-100 is all that I feel is safe.  I hit that at least weekly, mostly because on the freeway, I believe running away from the bulge of traffic is a safety issue.

If I lived out West, I would have no qualms going 120-130 where the roads are wide open and the traffic non-existent.

What is your definition of "regularly"?  Miss Busa will do over 90 in first gear, but she normally stays near the posted speed limits due to her owner's lack of funds to pay the tickets.  She has on a few ocasions found where the speed limiter is set and the GPS says hers is set right around 186.

Say, once a week on your recreational, clear out the cobwebs ride.

80 will get you a reckless ticket anywhere in the state of VA. And I'm never reckless.

My busy evening commute is very heavily patrolled and usually not much more speed than is needed is used to pass. My morning ride is no traffic and awesome. I have mellowed with age. That said, I have held my zx14 at an effortless 150 a few times when given the safe enough opportunity

140 is stupid easy to do on an R1.   Bigok  I was always astounded by how it just jumped up there with no apparent effort.   Cool

Actually, it's geared for 205 or so....1 up in the front and 1 down in the back.
I never exceed 200 though...that would be irresponsible... Wink
A quick downshift to 4th to pass a rolling roadblock of pirates results in an almost instant 150..

Former 650R was pushing it to get much north of 110 - at least with my fat behind on it.  The VFR will find 120 pretty effortlessly and feels pretty stable up there.  Normally I keep it down around 85-90 but every once in a while duty calls Lol  I've never tried to find out what the top speed on this bike with my 350 pounds on it is.

I regularly see 100 on the FJR.  The stretch of I-25 between the Springs and Denver, the pace of traffic on that road is often 90, even in 'loosely packed traffic'. It's insane.

Just to say I had done it, on a lonely stretch of Northern New Mexico Highway I pinned the throttle until the speedo stopped climbing at an indicated 155.  later at a gas stop in Taos my GPS indicated a max speed of 151.
It wasnt scary per se, but the simple realization of how it'd likely end up very badly if I hit anything even so much as a small chipmunk made it enough for me to only do it once.

UGH the Kennedy.  My nemesis.  I used to commute on the Kennedy every day for 2 years.  Yeah you won't get much open space there LOL!  It was the Kennedy that first started me to lane splitting.  I found that I could reduce my commute by as much as 30 minutes, simply by filtering when traffic came to it's inevitable standstill.  294, however, flies.  If you're doing less than 80, at least until everyone spots the Statie sitting on the side of the road, you'll get run down.  I-88 also flies.  I wouldn't wish the Kennedy on my worst enemy LOL!

I never quite get this.   Headscratch

The faster you go, the more momentum the bike has.  Hitting that chipmunk is a whole lot *less* likely to divert or unsettle the bike at 150 than at 50mph.  Now, if you hit a big pothole, the impact force on the wheel/tire is much greater (to the degree that the impact is horizontal rather than vertical), but chipmunks are notoriously soft and cushy.

On a closed course control environment I once got my FJR up to 120.  There was plenty more where that came from, but that was enough for me.

On Texas I-10 I once had to run up near triple digits for safety reasons to escape an out of control 18 wheeler.  Of course I slowed down to the 80mph limit as soon as it was safe to do so.

I've done 85 quite a lot, beyond that, I'm not so willing to go.

Mind you, we're talking about an 85 Virago 700. Sure, I modified the suspension with RaceTech up front and WORKS in the rear, slapped some Metzler Marathons on the hoops and some basic engine tweaking. It'll go further, might even break the 100 mph barrier (I hear 120 is about the max), but as stable as it is, my comfort zone is under 90 at this time.

I see 110 probably to often.  There are way to many straight, flat, empty roads around here.  I have seen 150 on the speedo but with gearing changes and general speedo error, that's in the 130-135 range.  Still plenty fast for me.

I earn the tonup pirate sticker I wear on the back of my helmet almost every time I ride not counting my commute to work.  Its hard to get too much over 80 in downtown Birmingham.

See 130 on a regular basis on the VFR.  Have seen 149 on the Sprint.

So far have only seen about 85 on the 72 CB 500.  Waiting for the new tires to see if she wants to break the ton.

Traffic in Atlanta is in the 70-80 range pretty regularly, so quick squirts up to 100 to get out of less than safe scenarios is common. Riding the highway back from Dahlonega, 90 is just keeping up with the flow. Crazy

i lived in algonquin for several years and commuted to the loop on my 93 cbr1000f for about two years.  the kennedy is brutal.  i found every little duck and dodge side road trying to clip minutes off that traffic jam.  now i live in chicago and am about to buy another bike (cbr1000f was stolen off my street).

my top speed was whatever that cbr did pegged out on interstate 90 out west of elgin.  it was 2 am on a warm night and i laid on the tank and wound it out.  sure it was nowhere near the top speed a 140 lb rider would hit, but i think it was around 160ish

So...  53% of of the respondants see 100+ mph Regularly?

Either a lot of folks have an unusual interpretation of the word regularly or this thread has brought out an unusual amount of internet bravado. I ride a fair amount and can't recall the last time a motorcycle passed me, and I doubt I've broken a 100 on public roads more than a handful of occasionas in the last several years. I don't do interstates much, maybe that's why.  Shrug

I think it is just where you live. Out here I ride with a couple HD guys occasioanlly and they usually cruise in the 85-95mph range and go over 100 between every gas stop? Personally I don't like sustained speeds much over 90 (just too windy) but a quick blast to 120+ is fairly common Smile

You're kidding right? Look at the bikes these people have...most will reach 100mph in less than 7 seconds.  Hell, my ZZR1200 would break 100mph as soon as I hit 3rd gear. No bravado here...it's just freaking fun. If you got the juice...you might as well have fun with it. Smile It doesn't take THAT long of a stretch of road to get up to that speed and back down again. I'm more shocked by the people that have never seen a ton versus the ones that have.

Does the track count? I see 155 indicated on the front straight, every lap.

There's a good road around here that I've seen 178 on.

Regularly I cruise at 130 - 140 on the highway... but I do that in my car too, so not a big deal.

Highest I've seen is 273 with a tail wind.

Is it thin skin or lack or a reading comprehension issue?   The question was about top speed seen regularly.  I simply stated what to me appears obvious based on the percentage of respondants that stated they broke the ton regularly.   That doesn't mean I'm saying YOU don't break the ton regularly.

As an ex-track-day junkie and general motorcycle enthusiast I'm fairly aware of what these bikes can do. Breaking the ton on almost any bike is a breeze and I have no doubt that some people break the ton regularly (I'd define regularly as at least once a week), but over 50%? Nope, I don't think so.

I've broken the ton on almost every street bike I've owned. The exception being an old 750 with a big windjammer fairing and my DR-Z. I tried really hard on the DR-Z on a long downhill straight once but the best I could muster was 91mph on the GPS as I recall. Smile  Maybe I'm just slow, or unlucky. My license is in constant peril with the state DMV and as I said previously, I rarely break the ton on the street.

one time I cruised for almost an hour at over 100, top speed 108. At that speed I start wondering if I could get stopped if a wheel bearing froze up, which is stupid cause it's only happened to me once in 35 years of riding.

On my V-Strom, 90 is about it.  The wind starts beating the crap out of me and it's no fun past that.

On my VFR, I took it to about 115 once or twice.  Usually I keep that at 90 or below well.   I don't see the point in going faster.

Yeah it was a pretty asshat response, it wasn't just you that thought so.  Regularly means often, no internet bravado necessary.  I break the ton every single time I ride, unless I'm just moving it from the alley to the front before a ride.  I can hit 100 before reaching the bottom of an expressway entrance ramp.  On some of the expressways around here the cruising speed, as long as Johnny Revenue Collector (formerly known as Johnny LawMan) isn't around, is 85.  That means if I want to merge, or change lanes, or pass someone, I'll need to hit 95 to 100 if there is more than one car involved in the pass.  No thin skin, no lack of reading comprehension.  Windblown, start a new poll if you want to know what regularly means to each person, but I can fully believe this poll is correct.  Hell, during my last bike trip to California, we rolled along doing well over the ton ALL FRIGGEN DAY, from Illinois, through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and half of South Dakota LOL!

I simply stated I don't think 53% of riders here break 100mph regularly and called BS. Some folks seem to have taken exception to that. I've been around the intraweb long enough to see the difference between claims versus real life. That doesn't mean that there isn't a percentage of riders that do, I'm sure there is. If you (the collective) want to believe that 53% of riders here break 100mph on a regular basis be my guest.

I heard a stock FZ1 will to 175mph, and it must be true, I saw it in print on the internet.  Lmao

Windblown, there have only been 158 voters in this poll so far.  How many thousand members does this site have?  I think at least a few hundred more active posters.  So that number in total is just a small subset of the total population here, and of that small subset, an even smaller subset say they break the ton regularly.  Why is that so hard to believe?  Out of 2000+ people, 158 voted, and out of 158, maybe 100 of them say they do the ton regularly.  I can believe those numbers.

I find it rather easy to believe. I have yet to ride with anyone on a sportbike (or sport-touring bike) that didn't exceed 100 mph when the oportunity presented itself? Maybe the people you ride with are different?

I've topped out every bike I've owned at least once. Going on speedometer, have no idea how fast I was really going.   CBR1000F, Valkyrie, 919, ST1100, VFR800, SV1000 were the fastest, all indicated 140 mph - 165mph. The Valk probably felt the most stable, but the wind blast was killer (no shield). The 919 was definately the scarriest, really light bike with no wind protection whatsoever.

Who else opens it up?

My wife and I have a rule that we have to hit triple digits every time we take a bike out. I usually just hit 100, but she goes for 130+ with her R1 and GSXR. The most I recall going is 150-155, and my wife has been upwards of 180+, but only 165 since her wreck in 2003. The Harley and 1987 Ducati Paso 750 are the two exceptions to the triple-digit-rule.

Regularly?  Not much over 100.  Acceleration is fun, top speed runs aren't fun on public roads.  Having said that, the 'Liner runs out of steam around 120 - 125, and the FZ1 has seen 140+ once or twice, but I don't know how much more it's got.

On my last bike, a vulcan 500, it would start losing power around 90 and 105 mph was my best (down hill, tail wind, etc.).  On my newer bike, 97 vmax, I hit 135mph once or twice.  It still had more but I chickened out.  Besides, the older vmax is known for a notorious death tank slapper high speed vibration if the steering head bearings aren't adjusted just right.  I was trying to be careful to diagnose.  Well, maybe not that careful......!!
