Shield Tech is going to releasing a light sensistive Transitions face shield some time this Spring

Quote
Powersports - Visors

Your gears are no longer the only things that shift. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Tech™ Transitions® SOLFX™ photochromic visors seemlessly shift from clear to dark smoked depending on the amount of sunlight present. No longer do you need to carry two visors for day and night riding as the Transitions® SOLFX™ visors self- adjust to any lighting condition. See great and look great no matter when you ride, where you ride, or what you ride.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Tech™ Transitions® SOLFX™ Replacement visors available for:

I think its a great idea that's been a long time coming.... but holy cripes...I'm not sure my wallet is up to it!!!

Years ago, 5+? , eh, I don't know. I tried a transitions shield add-on which I think was from Fog City. It's all fuzzy now, but that version of transitions didn't work for me. It did react to a sort of greenish leaned tint, but not nearly dark enough to make a significant difference.

I'd maybe pay the money their asking if it does go dark enough. Still, I'm thinking electronically darking screens can't be too far off...

Considering my glasses are polycarbonate and transition and how dark they get in full sunlight, I can imagine that visor will work just fine.  That is totally something I'd spend bucks for and it's not THAT much more expensive than buying a smoked screen.  Best of both worlds, and I no longer have to carry my clear for when the sun goes down?  Count me in!

Hmm...very interesting, but I'm curious to see how dark they get. It has to get AS dark as my dark smoked visor.

I've already got the Transitions shield for my Bell Star (being sold as a Bell product, not an aftermarket).  Pretty handy, though just like the sunglasses it takes a bit of time to transition.  Gets almost as dark as my dark smoke.

Got mine from Biker's Den for $79 USD, about double the cost of a regular smoked shield for my Bell, but not having to tote around two shields while riding makes it totally worth the cost.

I remember seeing Akuma having a shield that changed on demand.  Wonder what happened to that?   Headscratch

It comes standard on the Akuma Phantom Carbon helmet and it works really well. By the time I reach the end of my long gravel driveway the SOLFX shield on the Akuma has gone from clear in my shop to a dark smoke color. Great clarity too. Plus the Akuma is a very light and nicely finished helmet.

Scorpion used to make one. I had one and loved it.

Too bad it was destroyed in a crash.

That needs to come way down in price.  I could buy four new shields for the same price.  $129 compared to $35 for a new Shoei shield.  So I got a 6$ shield carrier that slides under my jacket and disappears.

$35 for a regular clear? I haven't seen a mirrored or a dark smoke Shoei visor that cheap.  Got a link to that shield carrier?

Here's a few different versions of shield carrier:

Basically this one- except Fieldsheer branded:

Can't tell you where I got mine anymore.  Some online retailer in the states.

Ahh ok.  If they get that cost down to about $75, I think that would be doable.  Replace 2 shields with one.  All that swapping and stashing and buckling would get tiresome after a while.

I haven't paid full price for a shield and I can swap shields quickly, without taking the carrier or jacket off..  But yeah, the price of two shields would be reasonable.

I have to question how well they hold up to bug guts and scratches though.  I thought normal polycarbonate shields were too dense for this to work.  Did they make the shield less strong/durable to make it shift?  Anybody with Transitions eyeglasses care to chime in?

It's a coating that goes on the lens, so I don't think density or thickness matters.

I couldn't remember the brand, but I do remember seeing that a few years back and hoping the technology would take off...still busy carrying an extra shield at the moment.

For that price I don't mind carrying a second shield.  The shields switch out super easy on my RF1000 so it's barely an inconvenience.  As for a cover, I just use an old black sock.

I really like my dark smoke shield so unless it gets about that dark I'm not sure if I'd consider it.

I bought one for my Bell Star and absolutely love it.  It would have be nice if it had been cheaper, but either way it was worth every penny to me.  I don't even think about an extra shield any longer.  Riding to work in the morning and at lunch and then having it dark on the way home, it just works.  Mine is about a year old now and is still clear and sharp.  So far no problems cleaning or with bugs and scratches on the lens.... Thumbsup
