I'm a Pirate again!! Pic after I pick it up!!!
I needed to SLOOOOOW down. A Harley will take care of THAT little issue!! Inlove

I will say I'm always amazed at the difference in dealer "experience" between Harely and "the other folks."

When I bought my C14, it was here's the bike, thanks.

Harley dealer has a program to take you around the dealership ( marketing, I know) and introduce you to every dept. head.
While it may be good for them, it is still a nice touch to ask any questions and have a little discussion with the folks you will be doing future buisness.

Most of the Harley dealerships I've shopped in left me really impressed. Buying a Harley at a good dealer is quite a shopping experience! They could teach a thing or two about customer interaction to several other MFGs.

I can identify with all the above. Had to slow down and turned to a HD before I lost my license, don't know if that was your case. Kept if for 2 years, got some points off, went back to medium powered Ducati 5 years ago: 1 ticket in seven years; amazing. Smile

I can totaly hear you on the dealership experience as my experience was exactly the same with my FJR: "Here's the keys, we expect you know how to ride", as opposed to a walk through of all the controls, even how to check the oil, by the dealer's best wrench, etc. Corporate follow-up is great too, ie welcome stuff, and customer satisfaction survey etc.

Congrats on your new HD. Smile

ST,
I used to ride Harleys ( and everything else for that matter as I'm not part of the "Brotherhood"!!). My last one was a VROD, and for a Harley they are quick. I can honestly say, I cannot control my right wrist! I've hit at least a 100MPH every time I ride. That is very easy to do on the C14, as it will happen if I windout 2nd gear a little. This spring, I really tried to ride like a human, but a little open road says, whack it just a little.
The last ride I took, I ran it through the frst three gears ( I love the sound of an I4, and I know many don't) I looked down and I was around 135! I thought all I need is a county sheriff running around or paked ( dead straight empty flat road, just the kind they "patrol")
and I would be toast.  That is to say nothing of the danger of whacking a ground hog at 135!!!!

I have been looking at a lot of naked bikes as a second bike. I know I will be better off if I remove the temptation for speed and just buy another Harley. I looked at a Streetfighter and new Multistrda, but damn they are worse from a HP to weight ratio than the C14.

My first big twin was a Dyna and I loved that bike, so I decided I would get another...

I may suffer from the Peter Egan illness. ( he seems to keep buying the same bikes over and over again!!)

When I tour I run backroads, and that's works fine on a Harley. I just won't be "SPORT TOURNING"!! Inlove Lol

There is something to be said for slowing down!
Cheers

So what Dyna didya get?

I bought a new 2009 Superglide custom. I really wanted last years silver and black paint. My dealer did a search and they found one in a warehouse, so he's having it shipped in this week..

I hate to admit it, but I already have some new "parts" and more on order...The P&A catalog is a problem!!!!

...I can honestly say, I cannot control my right wrist!...

Yup, that's why I've kept to a 100 HP bike. Don't need the aggravation of having to go slow on a bike built to go fast, and I don't need to compensate for other areas in my life that may be lacking, ahem, with a big powerful bike.  Wink   Lol

Quote

I fully believe in the old adage that's it's a lot more fun trying to go fast on a slow bike than having to go slow on a fast bike. I had plenty of thrills on my Low Rider, all within or slightly above the speed limit. And for me, that's fun enough: getting the feeling of acceleration I need and not caring about the actual top speed. Smile

(Just pay the Harley tax and get it over with asap. Smile )

Wasn't always like this. During the years of inventory shortages and price gouging, dealers were nothing more than order takers. Sales people had the customer relations skills of a grapefruit. Things have changed now that sales are down and inventory is up.

IMO, HD dealers were always a notch up over the other mfg's.

I agree with that. I've now purchased Harley when times were good ( a one year wait ) and lean times. I have always found the "dealer" part of Harley to be friendly and customer satisfaction above average. Even in good years they wanted your buisness back, passing out the "DREADED" P&A catalog. I swore I could avoid the temptation, but as I've said above, I've already ackslipped and ordered extra "STUFF".

Just remember to let your bike idle for a few minutes (while you're putting on your helmet etc) and take it easy for the first few miles so it can warm up properly.
Will eliminate any rocker box leaks that the "fire it up cold and immediately rev the nuts off it" crowd tend to get.

Ditto on the Harley dealer experience, they treat you like an adult spending a shitload of money on a motorcycle not an annoyance to their day. Case in point when I had my Dyna and my Bandit I got the jones for a Vstrom, I found a nice '07 brand new for $7k at the local multi-line, an excellent deal. I figured a couple of grand for the Bandito and cash for the rest and I'd ride it home. I stood there drooling over the bike and looking around for close to 1/2 an hour while the fuckhead salesman ignored me and concentrated on trying to get in the hottie in-house barista's britches........now I admit that she was a hell of a lot better looking than me but a middle age fat guy in a 'stitch with money falling out his pockets is a sure thing, a tight assed Betty with her nose in the air sadly is not.....

I wound up selling the Bandit for the cash down and trading in the Dyna for my FLHT but I would have kept the Dyna and bought the Vstrom if it would have worked. I also looked at BMW's, those dealerships are generally top notch also, I just preferred the FLH over the R-RT

Close, it's a Mephis shades Del Rio.
I had it on my Vrod! I like it. It blocks the just enough air to take the pressure off your chest at speed, yet is low enough to see over. It also produces very little turbulence on the helmet..
atadaskew ,
One other option I had left over from my VRod days is the fork brace. I rode the Dyna home from the shop and took a few back roads and curves. Once home I put on a few things, including the brace, it makes a lot of difference in the corners. My friend with a Monster laughed when I said it helped with front end feed back... Lol Lol But it really does!! Just for info.

Here's a couple more I had that show the shield better..

Nice Bike.......I also own an '09 dyna superglide custom.  I bought the Harley Compact Low Profile windshield, and the buffeting at speed is really annoying.  Absolutely can't use a full face helmet, a jet-type helmet is a little better.  I might want to try the Memphis Shades, wonder if it will work for me?  I'm 5'-10",  are you similar height?

Unless you get a screen that extends down and covers the front of the fuel tank, something like the pic below, you will always get that buffeting. The old "Convertible" screen is considered very good. I bought a Windvest screen and it was so slick looking on the bike, I always left it on, but anything above 65-70 mph was brutal; under that it worked okay but I had to put such a rake on it, I called it the "decapation unit." If you don't like the looks of a touring screen, there's always the "Jack Flaps" Aerovest option.

Good to know.  The Dyna I rented a while back had the medium Harley shield and it was awful.  Buffeting was so bad it was like getting punched in the head.  I turned around, went back to the rental joint and had them take it off.

So Memphis Shades Del Rio... hmm...

Yes, I'm also 5'10". I have several full face, the one I wear most is a Scorpion (1000).

I forgot to add!! I mounted the lower clamps backwards!!( I had the same set up on the VROD) It puts MORE rake in the shield so your helemt is not buffeted at the top like a normal windshield. More of my helemt is in the wind so it really is the helmet Aero that keeps my head steady! I also think the buffeting in reduced with the amount of rake. The Mephis shades rolls under on the bottom edge alot more than the Harley shields. I've had several "normal" Harley shields on other bikes ( FATBOY and Deuce as well as my other Dyna) and all produced too much buffeting on my head/helmet.
I think that rolled back bottom edge of the Shades and the angle I run it makes the difference.. You can see in the pic it is angled at about the same angle as the forks, yet the lower edge curls back much more than "normal" windscreens.
If you look at the first "close up" you can see how much the bottom a Mephis shades rolls back under. I think that makes the turbulent airflow under the shield instead of near the top as most common shields.
