Are you using "ST" to mean a Honda ST-1100 / ST-1300, or the more generic "ST" meaning sport-touring type of bike?  Headscratch

That's what I was wondering.

So, what sort of bike are you looking for, and how much are you looking to spend? I mean, if you've got the money you can get a heck of a deal on some new bikes, on the other hand if you are looking to spend $2500...

Also, which park of MI are you in?

Hmmmm... Let's see. I've got an '06 Sprint that I'll be selling after my 12,000 mile service. It should be on the market June 4th for somewhere around $6000. Just sayin'

Live in the Battle Creek, Kalamzoo area. Looking to buy my first slant bike. Not looking to spend alot trying to get some ideas. Dont want to spend $6000. Looking more in the area of 2 to 3000. Have to get prior permission from my finacial advisor. I am 6 ft 2 in at 250 lbs. I dont need to go 900 mph but want something that will get me down the road at a steady clip. Would like to get my hands on a 98 superhawk (honda). I ride a cruiser but want a "GO FAST". Dont have to be shinny or new or pretty or have bells and whistles just a standard bike. Something that if it falls over i pick up and ride off.

Superhawks are not STs, they have RR ergos that will make your legs ache in 15 minutes.
Try looking for an old Bandit 1200 or something along those lines.

I loved my '98 Superhawk for long day rides (500+ miles).  Corbin seat (which some dislike) made a huge difference for me.  It was terrible 2-up though.  You should definitely be able to find one in the $3k range.  I sold mine for that last year on the Superhawk forum which is pretty active and worth a look.

Edited to add: I'm much smaller than you at 5'9" and 165lbs and possibly important, was in my 20s when I owned the bike, all of which could factor into how comfortable you might find it.

You took the words right out of my mouth. And there is a very large owners group that will provide support. Reliable as hammers too. Because of the long production run of the 1st Gen Connies, parts are plentiful.

Superhawks have small fuel tanks and therefore are poor ST bikes.  They also have fairly compact sportbike ergos.  I think even a CBR600F3, F4 or F4i is roomier.

I'd look at a used VFR or maybe a Used F4i, or 929 or 954.  Used Triumph Sprint RS or Sprint ST's are ideal too and can be found at resonable prices.

A slant bike is a rocket bike. I call them "go fast". I had a Honda 82 CB 900 C. Which in its own classification was a Sport-Tourer. I am looking for a bike that is more sport than my 09 Kawasaki Nomad. I love a cruiser but am looking to go sport when its just me (when the woman dosent come with). Have a couple of buddies that have a 98 Superhawk and 08 cbrr 600. Would like to be able to keep up with there acceleration.

Rocket bikes can be a problem. Jay Leno has one, but he's got the dinero for fuel and aircraft techs to work on the bloody thing. I'd also caution against "bullet bikes" as they need to be stored in a cool, dry place and can be dangerous if they get in the wrong hands. Now the rice-burners... Lol

I'm not too sure that you would be able to keep up with their acceleration. But if you could, you'd likely end up eating a few weeds if you tried to stay with them when they get to the corners. If riding with those riders is the reason for your search, then I'm not sure a sport touring bike is what you want.

FZ6/FZ1. I have the 6, it's plenty wicked past 7k rpm.

Older Speed Triples can be had around the $3k mark. CB 919's, Bandits etc for better ergonomics. If I were looking in that range for a full blown sporty, I'd look for an R6.

You could go the vintage ST route.  Here's a Suzuki GS850G in your area for $1900.  Neutral riding ergos and very comfortable stock seat (fit me well and I'm also 6'2"), 5.8 gallon tank, shaft drive, corners well, no fairing or plastic bits to break if you drop it.  This particular one has addressed all of the issues these models tend to have.  It's the bike I had when transitioning from a 750 magna to my current CBR1000F, would have kept it, but the suspension on mine needed work and I found a great deal on the CBR.  It won't keep up with sportbikes, but it's plenty fast for the street.

Frankly, your CB900 with good tires is more than up to the task for street speeds. Shrug

Failing that, I still say Bandit for FZ1.

I thought I wanted a Superhawk, but that thing is tiny and at 6'2" I don't think you'll like it very well.  In your price range and at your size, I would recommend a first generation FZ-1, Bandit 1200, Gen 5 VFR800, RF900R, or a Katana 750, not necessarily in that order.  To ride with sport bikes, I would look first at trying to get a VFR or Kat 750.  Both are very capable in sporting mode, but much more comfortable than one of the smaller RR/SS type bikes.

Are you looking for something just out-and-out FAST?  Like a used Gixxer?

Or a sport-tourer?

Was looking at a 04 gixer 750. Like the look of the superhawks and the cbr 1100. Basically anything will corner better than my nomad. It dosent have to be stupid fast. I dont need to go 180 mph. would like something that fits my size and corners well and will still get up and go when asked. I dont want it to ride across america just want it to go out and have fun with the fellas. I need it to be cheap. Like I said before it can be ugly.

You don't mention age or physical condition, both of what are somewhat important in your choice of bikes for long-distance sport-touring. You say you are looking at a Gixxer 750, and being 6'2" and 250 lbs....if you are >50 and afflicted with the normal aches and pains of those of us of that age,  I can't see how you would be long-distance touring comfortable on a Gixxer without lots of mods ala risers, dropped pegs, etc -mods which would beget the question of 'did you really want a Gixxer or a more touring-oriented bike to begin with?' Gixxers might be hot, but sport-touring bikes they aren't.
 Sad

If your budget is <$3k and it's really (honestly) an ST bike you want, forget the Gixxer & the Superhawk, both for reasons previously noted. Connie, VFR, Bandit, FZ1 (FZ6 too small for your size/weight) and Sprint and not necessarily in that order.

FZ1, 1st generation.  Perfect for exactly what you want.  I used to have one and it will keep up with anything on the road in a straight line and kicks ass in the twisties as well.  Great bikes, can be had around $3k these days.

Naked - Gen 1 FZ-1 or Bandit 1200 would be right in your price range
Fairing - Gen 4 VFR (pre-VTEC 800), any post 1998 Katana 750, early 1100XX or ZX-11/12

Ok, Nomad... you're armed with all sorts of info. Go shopping, go ass testing, go test riding if you can... let us know your findings and what you decide on.

If you tally the results in this thread, I think you'll see a few very clear, very standout suggestions.

Don't listen to everyone else, just go find the closest Hayabusa you can afford.  They're pretty fast.
