So the .0 meet has happened...time to plan the .5 meet.

Here is my suggestion.

1.  Nor Cal (Susanville area) down to Yosemite area.
2.  Mid-August time frame.  Not too late to all for decent weather.  I'm thinking August 14th.

Let the BSing begin!   Lol

Why not really...that's saved for July....but pretty close and thats the point.  We continually run into weather issues in September.  The last one I went too the heated vest was on full the entier 600 mile ride home.  The trip home also started in the snow.  Not doing that again.

Just announce it.

Post that you'll be in a certain area and you'd like some company. If fellow ST.Ners are interested they'll show up and we'll have a meet.

How hard is that?

Sweet -- we've got 3 more meets already!  Thumbsup

We need a versioning scheme.  i.e. would Baker City be VII.6? VII.5.1? VII.52?  Or maybe NWCRM VII?  Jeez, we gotta sort this out pronto!  (Wait a sec -- has this joke already been beaten to death in previous years?)

That's what I was told at the wcrm ??? whatever.  Which is why I booked vacation in Sept instead of June.  They better not have lied to me.

BTW,  I think it's tradition to have shitty weather at any STN meet.  excluding the BBBBQ which always seems to be HOT,  sometimes too hot.

The first Nat'l at Custer,  it RAINED, the trip to Colorado, ... heat stroke,  West Virginia? ... hypothermia.  Second Custer.... snow in passes, next Colorado.... RAIN from Montana to Colorado.

I like the early season meets. It makes it possible to connect with people that might be too distant see otherwise and make new friends. Solid plans can be made for the upcoming riding season ... not in 9 or 12 month's time. Just my $.20.

Edit: I just realized this is about WCRM VII.5 not WCRM VIII... I was up late posting my ride report... I have an excuse... Slinking off now.

Chris, the summer heat in California peaks at the end of August, first week of September.  Mid August will be a sweatbath anywhere in the state, even at high elevations.

Personally, my vote is for mid September after kids are in school.  Fewer tourists on the road, slightly cooler temps.

I checked the temp history for northeast cali...temp peak in July and start to fall as August was several degrees cooler than July for the high and low.  September was a rapid fall from August.

As to kids and school...I call BS...it doesn't really matter as long as its not a major weekend.

Just some points to consider:

Susanville is at an elevation of 4,100 feet.  The peak average temperature is 89°F which ranges from about July 14 to August 3rd.  August 14th the temperature has dropped 3 to 4°F.  At the same time, (August 14th), Redding is looking at an average of 98°F.  A 3 to 4°F drop from peak doesn't mean crap in these areas.  If you are 86° at 4,100 feet then it is hot everywhere.  I ride in this weather regularly, so my perf leather and camelback will see me through.  But I doubt our friends to the north are geared up the same.

The OP stated that the trip would be Susanville down to Yosemite.  Yosemite is definity not NE California.

Children back in school means a 20% reduction in traffic on the backroads and less problems at home.

In summary, August is hot as hell, children back in school isn't BS and whining about electric vests, from someone living in the Puget Sound sounds more like trolling than trying to set a real date.

Unlike you I can ride in over 100 degree weather in my full stich and I am fine.

Also traffic means nothing to me.

So no it isn't a troll.  I'm tired of coming home in the rain and/or snow from these .5 meets...its happened more than once.

I'll take a 20% reduction in traffic.  The K1300S came with a cool traffic removal device called "a big friggin' engine", but it's only helpful if there aren't more cars after you pass the first one or two.  Cool

So where does this 20% number come from?  I've never had an issue riding around Cali in the summer.

A fair question.  Summer is considered the high season for tourists in the Truckee/Tahoe area (which is dead center between  Susanville and Yosemite).  I see increased traffic when school is out in the following personal anecdotal examples:

I am currently looking at a fractional ownership/time share just outside of Truckee.  The most expensive weeks (except for Christmas and New Years) are the summer months.  I interpret that to mean that there are more tourists in the Sierras in the summer.

I do a lot of jeeping in the Sierras in the summer and fall.  When school is out, I wheel Saturday through Monday so that I can avoid the I-80 Dixon to Fairfield traffic coming home Sunday.  In the fall, I can go Friday to Sunday without worry about the traffic.  Much of the traffic problem originates in the Sierras.  I  interpret  that to mean there are more tourists in the Sierras in the summer.

In Tahoe, the traffic near Tahoe City regularly backs up when the kids are out of school.  The traffic drops off when the kids are in school.

20% is my wild ass guess.  It may be 25%, it may be 10%.  But, when you are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, it feels like more.

If you wanted to stay up around Susanville and not go down to Yosemite, you may not notice any difference.  But, if Yosemite is part of the itinerary, there will be more tourists gawking at the views, holding up lines of cars.  That has been my experience. Bigsmile

The location range I provided was meant to say that we need to look at a range of areas and not just one place like people do for the .0 meet.   I was trying to direct towards a particular area.

Taking the worst area in that range and running with it is not fair as we would avoid those area's like a plague.  Frankly I wouldn't plan for Trukee/Tahoe area at all due to it being a zoo.

Sure it's fair.  You challanged the "kids in school reduces traffic" theory.  In support of that theory, I used the example that historically is the easiest to back up  - Truckee/Tahoe.  I didn't claim that we would be exposed to that traffic, just that kids out of school makes it heavier.

If we aren't going to be in that area...then it makes no sense to quote satistics from that area.  62.67% of facts are used incorrectly.  Opps...that is now 63%.

Unlike you I can ride in over 100 degree weather in my full stich and I am fine.

Also traffic means nothing to me.

So no it isn't a troll.  I'm tired of coming home in the rain and/or snow from these .5 meets...its happened more than once.

100 deg heat is worse than rain.  You can always add a jacket,  you can only ride so naked.  (Don't even start on sunburn in tender places.)

CA was last year so I was thinking something a little more to the North/East.

Ashland? Hood River? We've never done Ashland and it's a pretty sweet little town.

Remember, the .5 gatherings are smaller and more local. As good as it is to see everyone from the region, it's unrealistic that a region as large as 1 should be required to get together every time there's a gathering. We're just too big. If it works out, cool and if not, that's OK. The WCRM functions as the main shindig for the year. If we try to get all of us together every time then we actually end up limiting ourselves as we miss out on cool riding opportunities that may be closer to home.

That's a cool idea.   Cool   McCall is a pretty place to base out of, but it's too close to Boise for the Boise crew.   How about Orofino?  The high school mascot is the "Maniacs" which seems like it could be worked nicely into the meet T-shirt ("STN 2010--On the Road With the Maniacs").   Bigsmile

There's gotta be some good roads up there in northern Idaho/western Wyoming/southern Montana.   Thumbsup

McCall's not too close for Boise folks, IMHO.  It's a 100 mile jaunt up the Payette River canyon and Long Valley, but that's only if you take the most direct route! I would at least go via Idaho City to Lowman to Banks.  If it's an imperative that I arrive strung out from the road like everyone else, I could eat lunch at Redfish Lake south of Stanley and then backtrack to the aforementioned detour!  Bigsmile

BTW, do a Google image search on "Orofino Maniacs".  Nice...

McCall's not too close for Boise folks, IMHO.

McCall has that BTDT syndrome. Personally, I find it to be a bit too
touristy and congested. A mini-me version of Lake Tahoe. SH-55
rocks btw Banks and Round Valley Rd then becomes a drone.

Orofino is pretty cool. Kooskia sits at the crossroads of US-12 and
SH-13, and is usually my lunch stop btw Boise and Missoula. Never
stayed overnight.

Lowell is located in a very scenic area. I think Selway Rd, running
south out of Lowell, is supposed to be pretty cool although the
pavement runs out after a bit. I think it's a popular destination
for fishermen and families.

Grangeville is a farm town, but offers the best lodging and restaurant
options outside of Clarkston/Lewiston. It's 200 miles north of Boise.

<...> I could eat lunch at Redfish Lake <...>

Have been to Redfish Lake several times. I'd rather grab lunch out on the deck
at the Bridge Street Grill in Lower Stanley. Superb views of Salmon River and
Sawtooth Mountains.

Neither am I. Cambridge to Oxbow to Enterprise to Clarkston
are on really epic roads IMO.

US-12 btw Clarkston and Lolo is a favorite of mine although the
best part (scenery) is btw Kooskia and Lolo.

There are roads branching off from US-12 like SH-13 as well as
SH-14. Then we have Spiral Hwy, Kendricks to Orofino (P1 & 7),
Grangemont/11, plus a loop running north of US-12 from Kooskia
to Kamiah via Kidder Ridge, Tom-Taha, Glenwood, and Woodland.

As I remember, our daughter got her passport a couple of years ago and it was about an 8 week process.  If we go to Canada some of us (well, me at least) would need to get started on that right away.  Or, if we procrastinate long enough, I'll bet we could pay more for some government employee to expedite the passport.   Rolleyes

Yes, you can expedite the passport processing deal. You pay extra, but you get your papers quickly. I think they've got it down to 2 weeks now.

There's also an alternate ID card plan that works for people who travel between Canada and the US. I dunno if it works for travel between the states and Mexico and I don't know the details of how to obtain one, but the ID card program does exist.

I suggest a search of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement site.

Or we can :
a. hire a coyote with  a 40 ft truck and trailer. Load bikes and riders in the trailer and have the coyote drive us across the border

Yeah, but there's that 5500 mile long strip of mowed grass that you hafta cross.  I dunno if any of you have ever dealt with fresh-mowed grass, but there are a lotta things that could happen -- you could slip, fall down, maybe break a bone...

That reminds me, the famous WINDING ROAD NEXT 77 MILES road sign

below so keep an eye out for it. Don't know when they were gonna install it.

You do it.  all my polls are shot down.   Lol

Fuck the polls. Are a bunch of ST.Ners gonna show up in Baker City, OR, on the weekend of 9-10/12? Sounds like a rally to me.

Yeah baby, we picked the right weekend.   Bigsmile

It's too far for you anyway, there's probably big parts of Orygun where the gas stations are too far apart and the chance of rain too high.

Start your own rally.

I've broken the ice with the wife for Baker City. That Victorian Hotel looks very attractive and we've only to work out the details.

Its gonna be hard for me to do the 10-12th as its a race weekend for me.  I'm not sure I'm going to race but I have a track day on the 10th I've already committed to working.

When we were there the last time, Most of the group, if not all stayed at the Oregon Trails Motel. Nice older motel. All ground floor rooms and provided a wash area with hose, buckets, soap and old towels. Most of us met for dinner at a brew pub down town and it really wasn't good. Complained to the lady at the motel about it and she told me that if we came back again, we could us a meeting room in there restauant plus she could provide about any beer we could get  the brew pub cheaper. Also, I think that someone got use a group price.

Just thought that I would mention that we have an option. The first night at Barley Brown's was great. Sat. night I don't think that they were planning on us showing up again and they were a little overwelmed.  Plus the town was having a street fair or something. It was  pretty cool.
