This is from Transworld Motocross “I guarantee that when the outdoors come you won’t find anybody on a two-stroke,” says Hendal. “The unleaded fuel regulation is basically putting the nail in the coffin for two-strokes.” In addition a 250cc 2-stroke should race a 250cc 4-stroke, do the math. KTM 2-strokes are light, simple to maintain yourself, and if they could run the same high octane fuel they would kick your *** in the Idaho mountains, a given, and on the track. It's all about rider ability in real life but it's nice to have a bike that has more power than a 4-stroke, with the same cc's, at every rpm. You guys are a bunch of "geniuses" so I don't care what you say. Al Gore/Obama/tree huggers are slowly getting there way 2-stroke less green (done away with for racing), moved to the 4-stroke (more green), soon no riding on blm land in the western states, then no dirt bikes in the outdoors at all.

Four strokes are killing riding areas due to their excessive noise.

Two strokes are quiet and can be buit to be as green as a four stroke, but most of the big boring companies don't want to invest in them again. Yamaha, KTM, and Husky are the only major brands that still sell a four stroke. I see a ton of KTMs out and about because they are one of the few two stroke options when one wants to buy a decent 2 stroke trail bike.

Racing rules that pit thr 450 class four stroke against the 250 2 stroke is what killed the 2T.

Basically, 2 strokes are being killed off by politics even though they are superior to four strokes.

4 strokes are for the street,I bought my 1st 4stroke in 30 plus years of woods and dirt racing.I sold my 06 KTM 300xc to buy the 09 Honda CRF450r fuel injected,re-mapped for the woods still stalled,17oz flywheel weight, rekluse pro auto clutch, factory connection suspension, plus alot more.I was more wore out after 35miles of single track on it than 60 miles on 2stroke and the heat comming off it is extreme.I sold it after 3mths and went to a Yamaha yz250 2 stroke and all is well in the universe spanking  my riding buddies again.

While the AMA-EPA conspiracy is obvious, the magazine editors aren't helping much by ignoring the 2 stroke in their print. Convincing the buying public that  the 4 is superior. What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday. And the 4 is winning due to the unfair advantage. They read the articles and then go out and vote with their dollars. What we need is our own conspiracy plan. Stuff the AMA. Create a new series for 2 stroke only. Father and son racing is already struggling with the costs involved, and in this present economy, it's even harder to justify. A lot of kids have been put on the side lines for the season because the family simply can not absorb the cost when that 4 stroke grenades the top end. In many cases the bike is totaled or is not economically repairable. Anyone reading this forum knows the 2 is a lot cheaper to maintain for a season of racing/riding than the 4. Enter the poor boy racing series. How about no factory teams, limits to modification or overall bike value? I think the demand is here and now. So much so that track time could become a problem. Most tracks in my area are booked all weekend with AMA sanctioned events. Supply and demand. It would be a good thing if suddenly we had a need for more tracks. I can think of 2 golf coarses bankrupt and overgrown right now. How about the old land fills? Hell, I'd love to roost and old garbage dump! It's just like Vegas baby. "Build it and they will come"

It's all about development money too.
I have a 400cc 2 stroke and it's a low maintenance fun machine... the truth is unless your a top rider they ALL have more power than you can use.
Start rebuilding and maintaining a 4 stroke at race level, and you'll find out why every mfg is pushing them...
Big ongoing parts sales.

Anyone spent much time a big Asian city? The pollution is unbelievable and much of it is from small 2 stroke scooter motors.

I think the greenies killed 'em and I'm not sure they are totally wrong.

If they could be made to run clean and competitive, then they would have.

My 4 stroke 250 satisfies my needs - the day I can out ride the bikes abilities, I'll buy a old 2 stroke.

4-strokes have advantages - especially if you dual sport. Not everyone that rides dirt is racing, but you'd never know it reading the trades. Sometimes I miss 2-strokes, but I like engine braking sometimes too. There's no "right", there's just right for you and your ride. I'd be happy if both continued to flourish for the market, but I'm not convinced that it's 1 or the other....plenty of room for both.

At least two of us now.

I was at a riding park in Indiana last month and the 2 strokes out numbered the 4 strokes 3 to one.

I have the same bike.

The real problem is, two strokes can be made as clean as a 4 stroke.
They have developed direct injection for two strokes which greatly reduces their emissions AND saves fuel (of course).
I went to CSU's small engine lab for a tour, when they put them on the small two strokes in the developing world the fuel savings in the first year pay for the conversion.
Why doesn't Japan incorporated devlope this for us? Who knows.

A few reasons:
1. it's PC to be green and keeps them in better grace with the politicians.
2, They love to sell parts, and 4 stroke dirt bikes eat parts in mass quantities when raced.
3. until recently the hardware needed to fuel inject a dirt bike, in dirt bike operating conditions was not cost effective. (Now that it's available... see number 1)

I've heard about concept two-strokes that can run as clean as four-strokes for years. Has anyone actually put a two stroke bike into production that runs as clean as a four stroke?
