when you get to the Quad city's concider taking US18 or US20 west through Iowa and South Dakota(18) or Nebraska(20) and ride up from the south. I have done 90 through Minnesota and south Dakota and all i can say it is BORING as hell.

I'm from the Quad Cities, so I could potentially ride down, stay with my parents, and then head out with you.

That said, I'd have to agree with the above - we should try and find something other than I-90 to ride out on  Thumbsup

There are a lot of good ways to get to the Rapid City area.  Hwy 85 south through North and South Dakota is nice, but straight.  23 through MN is also nice, sort of gentle sweepers through grassland.  14 across SD is long and straight, but goes through nice little towns and such and is WAY better than the damn interstate.
That being said, I have had more than my fill of SD and am not going back there for a long time.  Same thing for Wyoming Smile

+1 on US 14... This is what mine looked like, a few years back:

576 miles on US 14 (and a bit on I90, west of Wall, because I didn't have much choice) at an average moving speed of 68.3 mph. (You do the math)

If you've ever been in that area (especially during Summer), you'd know two days aren't enough to do everything.  I'd tool about some of the roads I passed by the last time I was there.  Got heat exhaustion last time and dropped my bike in front of a cop because I was too whipped from the heat (and yes, I was drinking lots of water).

Another option is Nebraska hwy 2. Runs from the southeastern corner all the way to the northwestern corner, with a small stretch along I-80 (90 miles). Once north of Grand Island, the highway takes you through the Nebraska Sand Hills. While not exciting riding, the scenery is nice.

No.  My problem was this jackwagon in an RV who insisted on going 25 and never letting me pass.  Ever try to manage a 600+ lb. XX at 25 mph for over a half hour in 90+ degree heat?  Crazy

I was cooking by the time I got to the nearest town.

I took a similar ride last year. I rode Rt. 20 from Freeport, Il to O'neill, NE. Then I rode north till I hit RT. 18 in S.D. Then 385 the rest of the way.

Right now I’m planning on making my way to Milwaukee on Saturday, June 11th. I’ll take the ferry from Muskegon.
Sunday morning I’ll check out the Harley Museum, then take off for Custer, arriving sometime on Monday.
Other than that I have no itinerary.

Anyone else working on a similar schedule?

Hey Greench440 and I are leaving Seattle on the 10th too.  We should find a place to meet up with so we can continue the ride to the National.  Perhaps in western Idaho.

Saturday could work. I was thinking of pushing it to Lolo Creek Campground in Lolo national Forest. The campground is right on US 12. It would be a long day (409) miles from Kettle Falls to Lolo if I take the 395 down to 12. If I cheat, and go I90 it is a lot less.

Sounds like a nice route, and our paths may cross. I, however, will be starting more northerly and then angling down through ID, cutting short through MT and into WY, crossing WY to Custer. I am leaving the 10th, and plan to be in Custer area sometime Monday. The only nights in a motel will be while in Custer on the Tues and Weds of the meet.Oh, and I will be camping both on the way down, and the way back.

zer0netgain, Is that still the route and days you plan to use to get to SD?

I'm about 630 miles from Custer. I was thinking of doing the trip out in 2 days. I was thinking of getting to somewhere just east of the Mo. River on sunday night. Then going to the Minuteman Missile Nat Hist. site early monday. Making custer in the afternoon.

Or,

I might head west saturday?? My plans are still open.

Anyone else from a state east of SD attending?

Erik.

Sadly, no.

Due to a lack of response from anyone showing interest  Lol  I went ahead and planned a more direct route.  It's a tried and true route, but it replaces a long boring stretch of South Dakota with a long boring stretch of Nebraska.  Lol

It does, however, let me get Kansas off my state map list of places to have ridden in.

I'll be coming into Custer from the south from Chadron, NE on Sunday.

I will miss you guys. It's always a good time (not that I've ever ridden an entire route to a national) and usually with a surprise bottle of scotch.  Bigok

Potentially, I could attend, but it would certainly tilt the balance towards attending if I had someone(s) to ride out there with.   Bigsmile

I'll be in Milwaukee on Saturday, June 11th. Sunday morning I’ll check out the Harley Museum, then take off for Custer, arriving sometime on Monday.

Not really on your way, but it's the best I can offer.

Checking out the extended forecasts at Accuweather. Temps look good, but there will be showers and t-storms the 10 through the 13th through Lolo, MT area, same for Salmon, ID. But the temps are showing in the 70's. At the passes it will be cooler, but hopefully no snow!

Lochsa Lodge tonight. A badly needed dinner and beer.  768 km today and sadly for us, it poured rain today and all the way up 12 and very misty along the river too. Visibility was challenging  Headed south tomorrow looking for sun as the forecast is crap around here for a day or two. Maybe head to Bonneville and loop up through Utah.

Sun !
