OK, I know I need an intervention, but I picked up an '85 GV700GL yesterday that had been sitting for a few years and am looking for information in this critter (hey, it only cost $100).
I'll be pulling the plugs this weekend and squirting some oil in the cylinders and then hooking up a battery to see if it will turn over. If it does, then I suppose I'll put some money and time into it and make it usable again.
So where can I find information on this thing? Assuming the engine isn't frozen, I'll obviously be doing fluid changes, new tires, brakes, general cleaning, lube the final drive, and finding replacement parts for the missing rear turn signals as well as the front lenses and one housing. Suggestions for finding parts and an interchange list?
It promises to be an interesting summer
I'll have some better shots posted at
Flicker
tomorrow when I have it outside.

Well, the engine is not frozen. Put in a new battery, the lights light, horn beeps, engine turns over, brake lights work, turn signal indicator works (no turn signals to test the relay), so it's officially a restoration project. Looks like the biggest problem will be finding stock rear turn signals - they only came on that model. *sigh* I've found some at $75.00 each. I'll keep looking. If I could find the brackets maybe something can be made to fit/work.

A 500lb (dry weight) bike with so many one off parts (non-interchangeable) as to almost be a unique motorcycle, that has marginal handling to begin with. Oh, you are a funny man.

Turn signals are easy, should be able to rig something up:

Careful though, too much time on a Madura turns you into pirate, arrr!

Thanks for the link. The biggest problem/issue/opportunity with the turn signals is that square mounting peg. I think the fronts are going to be the biggest challenge - for the rears, probably something aftermarket bolted to the factory mounts (which are still available - sort of).
As for the back rest - yeah, that's stock. Actually it feels pretty comfortable. The Magna of the same time frame is similar.
Not much worry about becoming a pirate - the Norge will protect me from that.

I think your biggest issue will be the carbs, if you can get it running I would turn it into some sort of cafe style bike. I know.... everyone makes their old jap bikes into cafe racers but that bike was about the uglyist bike to ever come out of japan so you really cant screw it up and having a watercooled V-4 would make it much more interesting than just another old inline four. Sort of a poor mans ugly bastardtized RC45.
