Price check please?

Came across a 2001 600 Monster Dark, 11k miles, major service just done, never down, very clean.
KBB says $1800 trade, $2700 retail. Owner says he wants $4k, but he hasn't put it up for sale, it's just garage jewelry right now, but he wants it to go (not super motivated, by the sound of it). He also implied that he would go lower, his price isn't firm.
So, it's in Michigan (poor to no economy), so what do you think is fair? What would you offer?

Don't do it! the 600's were still a carbed model and not a very good choice. 01 750 is fine but the 600 never ran that well. Only sold one year in the US and the next year they went to a 620 FI version which is a much better choice. $4K is also too much, you can find 620's in that range easy.

Do you think it would be that bad for, say $2200? Did the carbed model run that bad that no one ever sorted it out? I was thinking about it as a wife/son/buddy ride, with maybe a couple of runs for me now and then.
Still avoid it?

of course $1800 lower price makes it more attractive
Problem was and this one may be already sorted, had to do with the carburation needing to be strangled to meet EPA tightening regs back then and the flywheel on the US supplied bike was also an issue affecting the ignition timing and I believe the Euro version helped advance the timing to help it run better as well. Basically it was fine for markets were it wasn't required to meet tough emission regulations as it did in the US. We only sold two 600's as the 620 followed quickly behind it and that year the 750 was the big seller still. They can be made to run well, that one with miles probably has been sorted. Ask the seller about jetting and such.. If it has sat for a long time the carbs will need to be thoroughly cleaned and there is a good opportunity to jet them properly! Also keep in mind the $$ to freshen up a garage queen, timing belts, tires, all fluids etc.... hope this helps.. for the price it may be worth but I would still closely evaluate what it will need.. You are a long ways away from being able to give it a sniff test so to speak!

My '08 has just under 10k miles, and it's a second-fiddle bike. I'd be curious about how long that Duc has been a garage queen (even at $1800).
I looked at a few 600s, they're beautiful bikes, but most I saw here had some rust bubbling underneath the paint on the trellis frame by the welds.
