So, the 2004 FJR has a rear end ratio of 1:66 vs the GenII FJRs at 1:56 or 2.7% taller.

Does anyone know if the rear end is swappable between the GENI and GENII FJRs?  Headscratch

I have no idea, but I would ask your question over at www.fjrforum.com

The rear end ratios of the GenI and GenII are the same, the 2.7% taller gearing on the GenIIs are the result of a one tooth difference in one of the transmission middle gears.

There is a couple threads of guy's that have swapped the rear diff from the Venture to an FJR. Haven't seen how successful it was, but supposedly it was a bolt up swap

Maybe I need to clarify my earlier post, if the only reason to put a GenII rear end on a GenI is to change the gearing...don't bother... because the rear ends on both models have the same gearing.  The rear end contains the ring and pinion gears and the number of teeth are the same, the ring gear has 33 teeth and the pinion gear has 9 teeth.

Yes, That was my intent, to quit looking for 6th gear when on the highway. I think it's starting to sink in to my feeble mind....so where does the

Secondary reduction ratio 2.698 (35/37 x 21/27 x 33/9)

Secondary reduction ratio: 2.773 (35/36 x 21/27 x 33/9)

The gear that was changed from a 36 to a 37 tooth is in the transmission.

From what I've read elsewhere the final drive unit on the FJR is the same as on the old V-Max before the redesign.  And the V-Max drivetrain was based on the Venture's so I would fathom a guess that the final drive unit itself is swappable between all three bikes.  The question is did Yamaha ever put different final drive ratios in the Ventures or V-Maxes as compraed to the FJRs?

I have a Venture rear diff and it's not a bolt up swap for an FJR, there are a bunch of minor differences, some to the housing and others to the wheel spacers which made it a very iffy proposition.
However it may be possible to change out the ring gears but I need access to some tools used to set the preloads.
Since I just got the FJR back together after an extensive rebuild this will be a winter project.

not true - someone on www.fjrforum.com spent a lot of time trying to make a non-FJR final drive fit on his FJR with no success.
