Hear Ye, Hear Ye! R4 LDW Meet Details

Moderator- will you sticky this, please?
Okay, the consensus was for the R4 Western Region Meet is LDW. I’m on call that weekend, though I may get someone to cover for a couple hours Sunday, or Saturday afternoon if I’m lucky. That way I can go on at least one ride with the group. I’ll have several self-guided routes and road reports available, too. It’s not that I’ll be unavailable for socializing, only that I’ll have to be less than 15 minutes away at any time (unless someone covers for me).
For entertainment, a couple friends are having a reunion with the band they played with. They all still play regularly, but not in their former group. It will be a free will donation. Last year it was great fun.
I’m also planning to host a gathering at my home. We have a (big) paved driveway that will provide off street parking for about 12 motorcycles, up to 20 if we arrange ‘em right. Let me know by PM if Saturday or Sunday works better. We could even host a Monday AM breakfast.
I’ll post a list of area restaurants and hours in the not-too-distant future.
Lodging- as of this evening, all of these have rooms available. No one would offer a group discount, but it’s not like they’re charging a king’s ransom.
If I were travelling through Viroqua, I’d stay here:
http://www.vernoninnandsuites.com/
Pool, hot tub, jacuzzi rooms available. Edge of town, but walk to Kwik Trip, Grocery store, movie theater, Pizza Hut, Subway and Mickey D’s.
Rate: $77-81.
Other options:
Midway Motel
850 N Main St, Viroqua, WI 54665
(608) 637-2929
Not really big on amenities, but location is less than half a mile from downtown and within walking distance of 2 local restaurants, a Culver’s, a Mickey D’s, a food co-op, a convenience store and a Walgreen’s.
Rate: $68-70.
Hickory Hill Motel
S5539 US Highway 14, Viroqua, WI 54665
(608) 637-3104
Outdoor Pool, about 3 miles south of town. Not close to much of nuthin’.
Rate: $58-68.

I'm going to check the schedule at work today. If I can get the time off, I'll plan on a 3PM Thursday departure after work, arrive Friday morning and stay thru Monday, riding back Tuesday for a total of 3 vacation days. My lodging plans are to camp at the Sidie Hollow County Park just west of town to keep it on the cheap side. The park is about 3 miles away from downtown and has some nice amenities.
http://www.co.vernon.wi.gov/LWCD/parks.htm
is their link. This will be my first LDW vacation in a long time.
I loves me some spaghetti roads up in LaCrosse.

I'm in for at least some of this....too far away to figure out how much, though. Also thinking of taking the following week to meander out to MA on the ST...maybe even stretch out toward Nova Scotia...or at least to spend a couple of days diddly-bopping round the Allegany, Green, and White Mountains in upstate NY, VT, and NH.
Weather and work-dependant, of course...

Planning the routes and deciding whether or not to take the high speed ferry across from Muskegon Wednesday night. Did I mention I hate riding thru Chicago?
If we do, we'll spend the night in Milwaukee and take a leisurely ride across northern Wisconsin on Thursday to Viroqua. Anyone else with the time off and wishing to join in are more than welcome.
I contacted the Midway Motel. We'll be joining the group at the Vernon Inn, as I don't feel like hauling all the camping gear this trip.

I have a room at the Vernon Inn and Suites for 9/3,4,5/2010. Still rooms available.
Doesn't look like much interest in this meet yet. Maybe some late interest?

Unfortunately this is the same weekend that the GLMC has for their record attempt group BBG and alot of upper midwest folks should be there. It is based out of Watertown SD so not that far away, maybe some can do both.

Reservations made in Milwaukee for Wednesday night at the Econo-Lodge near the airport. I booked a three bed room, if anyone wishes to join us that night and ride across Wisconsin back roads Thursday to Viroqua. Arrival will be damn late, as we're taking the Lake Express ferry 11 PM crossing. Figure a 1AM CST arrival at the motel.
We also got a room reserved for Sept 2-5 at the Vernon Inn. See you there.

Not like it used to be. I was thinking about coming but bike needs some recall and warranty work done next week if the parts come in. Also need new rear tire and 12k tune up.

The county fairgrounds has camping with showers and toilets. It's just north of downtown Viroqua.

Area Dining
Viroqua has several restaurants. For a full meal with all the trimmings, try the
Firehouse
. It's near the south end of town on Main (US 14/61). Good steaks, cajun dishes, full soup and salad bar.
Excellent authentic Mexican food can be found at
Chilito Lindo
, just south of the hospital at the intersection of Main and Rusk streets.
Regional seasonal cuisine is the specialty at the new
Optimo Cafe
, on Main in the middle of town. It is adjacent to an art gallery.
Basic midwest meals with chicken, fish, beef and pork are the mainstays at the
Viking Inn
, at Main and Decker (Wi 56)
If novel (though not exotic) dishes like curries, specialty pizzas, soups and sandwiches are what you're after, try the
Driftless Cafe
on Court Street. They also have excellent desserts and many craft brews. You may happen upon live music or a poetry reading, and there's usually art on display.
Karen's Kitchen
has good diner food- great breakfasts. It's across from the fairgrounds on North Main.
Main Street Kitchen
is just north of Karen's. It's a former Country Kitchen with pretty much the same menu. The Friday Fish Fry is pretty good- your choice of perch, Canadian bluegill or cod. You might be able to get catfish, too. I never go looking for catfish- I grew up on perch from Lake Michigan.
The
Viroqua Food Co-op
has an organic cafeteria, with a coffee bar and bakery. The muffins and scones are excellent, the soups are always good. Main dishes vary, but are usually tasty. Lots of vegetarian options there and at the Driftless Cafe.
Viroqua also has it's share of franchises:
Subway, Pizza Hut, Culver's, McDonald's,
and
Dairy Queen
.
7 miles north in Westby you'll find the famous
Borgen's Cafe
. The pies are to die for. Their hours are more breakfast and lunch, so it's best to get there early.
Westby is also home to
Ole and Lena's Coffee Haus
, which also has baked goods, candies and ice cream.
At the south end of Westby is the
Old Towne Inn
, a supper club with a full soup and salad bar and a variety of traditional dishes.
East of Viroqua is La Farge, where
Sisters' Place
, a new restaurant, has very, very good food at low prices.
Coon Valley is halfway between Viroqua and La Crosse, where
Di Sciascio's
has the best Italian you'll find this side of Madison.
There are a couple of local restaurants that are also good at the US 14/61 junction in Readstown, 10 miles to the south of Viroqua.
Tomorrow or Tuesday I'll post some riding routes.

LDW Meeting points and times?
It might be fun to meet up Friday night after people roll in to town. We can discuss options for rides and later get-togethers. Does 8PM work for everyone, or should we plan on something later, like 9 or 10? Depending on how many people would like to show up, I can reserve space at one of a couple places. Let me know (on this thread).
