Service pricing for my 87 K75S
«

The last time my bike was serviced was in 99 at it's 10,000 mile checkup. I just bought the bike with 11,XXX miles on it. A guy wants to charge me $500 to lube the splines and change all the fluids/filters. It also need a new rear master cylinder. SO all told I'm guessing it will be around $700.
Good price/is the bike worth it? So far I like the bike, I've limited my riding until I can cough up the dough for the repairs. I got the bike for a good enough price so I don't mind putting the $ into it if it's worth it.

Spline lube is one of those maintenace pieces that, tho slightly pricey, are well worth the $ spent, as it will pay off in avoiding later repair that
will
happen at an inconvenient time:crazy:.
Great bike, super reliable, tho a bit underpowered for 2-up big mountain touring.
The rear master cyl is a common part to fail, especially on an older bike. Not a tough job to do yourself, especially if you have a Mighty-Vac, or similar. Also, you can change all fluids and filters yourself, and save a bunch o' dough, unless you have absolutely no mechaical skills whatsoever.
best prices for most factory parts..

Seems to be in line, especially if fluids are synthetic. The BMW rear drive oil, and trans oil go for about $20 a quart. The BMW Synth motor oil is $8-9 per qt. The spine lube is easily a $125 job, at going shop labor rates. If I am correct, this is even more important on your '87, because that is before they changed the hardening of the shaft, and should be done every 10K miles.
The K75 is a super-strong (as in reliable) engine, with many high-mileage units still running well. Not the most powerful, but I cruise mine at 75-80 mph all day long, with no problem. Positively the smoothest motorcycle engine ever, almost like an electric motor. I find it a nice place to spend all day. I plan on keeping mine a long, long time.

Weegee,
The REAL question to ask is "WHICH splines will you be lubing?"
If he's lubing the final drive splines, heck, that's barely a 30 minute job - and I wouldn't pay anyone to do that job. Can be done very easily with basic tools.
BUT if he's talking about the CLUTCH PLATE SPLINES, yeah, $500-700 is actually reasonable. To get to the clutch splines you actually have to pull the rear of the bike almost completley apart. The transmission needs to come off, pretty much mandating that the final drive, swingarm, etc. have to come off with it.
IF you choose to have this guy do the work, let me make a recommendation. Go over to your local Honda dealer and buy a tube of Honda Moly 60 lube. It's the best lube on the market for splines and is highly recommended by BMW-philes.
Either way, yes, you do have to lube the splines on an older K-bike regularly. Typically recommended every 15k or so.

Join local BMW club, find a handy guy in the group if money is an issue. The job is straight forward with no special tools needed. You might even learn something!

If it were me I'd have the splines done and maybe the master cylinder if you're not comfortable working on brakes.
The fluids you could change yourself, it's quite easy.
If you keep the bike and have a garage eventually you can do the spline lube yourself. You just need to figure out a way to support the bike. When the transmission comes out you no longer have side or centerstands.
I built a platform that I tie down the bike to like it's in the back of a P.U. truck.

Assuming the bike is in reasonable shape, it is worth it. The splines are a known problem area. Regularly lubing them will keep them happy. The bike is mostly pretty durable otherwise. Plenty of examples with over a quarter million miles without the top or bottom ends ever being apart are out there. The bikes are holding their value or even appreciating a bit these days. Few bikes are as buttery smooth as a K75.
BTW, if the bike produces blue smoke out the exhaust when it first starts, that's normal, as long as it goes away pretty quickly. There can be oil seepage past the rings, which burns off harmlessly upon starting the motor. This can be reduced by parking the bike on the centerstand instead of the sidestand.

Not yet, haven't had the $$ since the move to AZ. So in the garage it sits for now.
