Hmmm.... I've been waiting for a Futura replacement and thought maybe a retuned RSV4 would be it. Perhaps this 1200cc twin will power a new Futura... Gotta think that Aprilia is going to use that engine in at least two bikes.

Looking at their current line-up, I think a new Futura is unlikely.  In their street line-up, Aprilia is favoring the streetfighters (Tuono), Standards (Shiver - maybe a 1200 Shiver Standard soon?), and Road-Motards (Dosoduro).  The classic sport-touring of the Futura seems to be something of the Past.

Yep.  Just look at the Shiver GT in Europe.  More like an Italian Bandit 1250 than an old Futura.

Indeed.  The two most recently released ST bikes are the VFR12, and the Duc MS12.
One of these has been received with press and public (sales) adulation, the other not.

Which of these bikes is most like a Futura?...

Yeah I agree.  However, that dry weight listed at 467lbs is a bit hefty for this segment, at least compared to a Hypermotard 1100 which is about 100lbs less (!).

The Dorsoduro weighs a hundred pounds (nearly 25%) more than the HM and around 20lbs more than the MS1200. The Dorsoduro is roomy where the HM is very compact. They are all long-travel suspension standards non are supermotos. I see a direct comparison between two long-travel suspension standards with a small fairing and water-cooled 1200cc V-twins.

More info reported today across the bike press...  big news is the bike's power numbers, and the new Aprilia traction control system.

Very sexy, but I'd probably use this in the same way as a Hypermotard, and as suggested earlier - the Ape is larger.  Granted, it puts out a lot more power, but I'm personally fine with the amount of power the Duc produces.

MCN Senior Road Tester Michael Neeves is in Italy riding Aprilia’s new Dorsoduro 1200. This is what he has to say so far:

“This isn’t just any big supermoto, it marks the start of a new era for the Italian firm.  The new Dorsoduro is powered by a brand new, 90-degree V twin 1200cc engine which we think will power a new adventure bike and Shiver-type roadster in the future.



“With a claimed 130bhp it has the legs on the Ducati Hypermotard and KTM 990SMR on paper but on the road the Dorsoduro 1200 is a lot less manic. The power is very friendly and the bike is very easy to ride.

“The UK bikes will come with traction control and ABS as standard although our test bike didn’t have these electronic goodies. It does have the three-way riding modes, though for Rain, Touring and Sport. From what I can tell so far, Touring is the best mode – Rain is too soft and Sport is too aggressive.”
