Check to make sure the valve guides have been replaced/updated. Does it have the stock seat? If so, they're pretty hard and pretty uncomfortable. I think valve adjustments are every 6K for those...and they usually need it. At almost $1K per service, maintenance costs can add up pretty quickly if you put miles on your bikes....oh nevermind...you already know.

I owned this first year Multi and never had the dreaded "Valve" problem. I just traded it at 40,000 miles.
The stock seat is really bad, you need a Sargent or the Ducati Comfort Seat. In 05 they made the comfort seat standard.
The stock 04 mirrors suck, I tossed mine installed small turn signals on the fairing and bar end mirrors. In 05 they widened the mirrors considerably.
The stock side stand is dangerous. With the stock saddle bags on filled moderately the side stand will not support the bike. Make sure it has the 05 side stand upgrade.
I routinely stretched my valve lash check to 7500 miles. I didn't need any adjustment until 18,000 miles, and I ran it hard.
The 1100 has many upgrades, unless this is just too good to pass on, I'd look or an 1100.

It's only $2k, so I think it falls under the 'too good to pass on' category

I agree with the stock mirrors comment. I had three replaced under warranty before giving up and going aftermarket.

What should I know?
I just found a killer steal on one. Even though I don't need another bike...
I just emailed the guy the other day. He is in the Army and is being deployed to Afganistan at the end of August and needs to get rid of it fast because he won't be able to use it for a while and he doesn't want it to waste away in the garage. He said he needed to get rid of it before August 29 and that is the reason for the low price. I will see I guess. I told him I would take it. It may be a gamble but for $2K I will gamble on it. Plus, I will be protected by Ebay's buyer protection. I am pretty excited about it.

In my spurt of Multistrada interest a few weeks ago (brought about by a similar deal) I discovered that the early models have gas tanks that deformed with the use of ethanol. The tank warps and no longer fits. Apparently Ducati will replace it.

It is no longer on Ebay. I can put up a link with pics after the deal goes through.

So you bought it through eBay, or you're doing it outside of eBay's channels? If it's outside of eBay, combined with "need to sell fast" and "$2,000" it's starting to sound fishy.

HAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
Truly a great bike. But...it did get beaten with the ugly stick, for sure. Although you will never hear of an owner complain of that. Cause it's simply delicious from the seat.

Yeah, I got his email too. It's total bullshit. I stopped emailing him back, because I think it's a scam. Good luck with the sale, but I'm 90% sure it's junk.
Congrats if it's for real though. I won't be pursing it anymore

TOTAL SCAM!!! As soon as the guy asked me to wire him money via Western Union the deal was off. I also emailed the owner of the original Ebay ad and he stated that it was still for sale. Anytime someone says they are using Western Union, good chances it's a scam. Good thing I didn't let my self get too excited about it.
THis gives me a little more time to research sport touring bikes in the meantime. I have been a long time crotch rocket rider but now as I get a little older, those all day rides on an R1 (which is for sale) just isn't fun after about 4 hours. It is downright painful for me. Time sucks.
