I'm in a good mood today.

I received a performance award on Lolo Pass just after I crossed over the border into Idaho from Montana earlier this month. I was told that I was doing 72 in a 50 which I don't doubt since I have it all on video with my GoPro.

I wasn't pushing it very hard just really enjoying the scenery and twisties so I got complacent about watching my speed. This was the first ISP car I'd seen. It didn't look like an LEO at all since it was an SUV.

He wrote me for the entire 72 in a 50. I was surprised by this since he asked me why I have a Utah plate and a Colorado drivers license. I explained to him I was active duty military and stationed in Utah. I usually don't produce my military ID unless asked. I don't want to BS an LEO and I don't want them to think I'm trying to earn favor by being military.

From prior experience they do appreciate my service and cut me a break. Not this guy, he threw the book at me and my riding buddy that was trailing behind me and wasn't going as fast as I was but wrote him for the same speed. Don't get me wrong, I was honest and admitted I was speeding even though I had no idea I was going that fast over the posted.

Long story short I plead not guilty with help from a lawyer friend in Idaho and got it cut down to defective equipment so no points will be deducted and the fine cut by more than half.

I'm happy with that outcome and this incident was a reminder to slow it down a bit.

Watch it in Idaho because they enforce the hell out of their speed limits. The next day we were pulled over again because the ISP LEO on his R1200RTP thought we were going too fast around a corner (he was going faster than we were in the opposing lane Rolleyes). We were well within the speed limit and he had nothing on us and had to let us go with a verbal warning.

As a rule, state police = professional pricks.

This guy was on US-12?  He was in the middle of farking nowhere (who knows where he lives or is normally stationed) with nothing better to do but cite people and go to court.

A couple of years ago in the exact same place, probably by the same cop, myself and two friends received tickets for speeding even though we weren`t actually close together.  The Leo then arrested my buddy from British Columbia (we are all Canadian and living in Canada) because he had an unpaid ticket in Washington state.  My buddy in fact had never been to Idaho prior to this trip.  The officer said that If he had a unpaid ticket and subsequent licence suspension in Washington, then his driving privelidges were suspended in Idaho as well. Headscratch
This was on a Saturday afternoon,  my buddy went to jail in Grangeville until he saw a judge on Monday morning.  The judge gave him something like $1000.00 in fines including the idaho ticket and suspended his licence for six months.
Needless to say, when he was released, we got the hell out of Idaho. Twofinger

Sounds like a bunch of tight asses over there.

WTF, they don't want people going into their State?  That seems just seems like they're bored or just Nazis.

ISP is tense about that road because riders go over there and treat it as their personal race track and they see a lot of crashes. BTW, Idaho doesn't even come close to Oregon for LEOs patrolling the roads. I've even seen an OSP between Burns and Lakeview and there's nothing out there. Nothing. At times it seems they have a LEO for every road in the state.

They also get their share of the failed to negotiate curve and no helmet contingent. One
such example in link below which was fatal:

http://idahostatepolice.blogspot.com/2010/08/update-fatal-crash-eb-us12-milepost-149.html

I've yet to see OSP btw Lakeview and Burns although I did see *3* Sheriff vehicles on
SB US-395 alongside Lake Abert. They were all together.

OR the OSP will be looking to justify their paychecks

Sadly, that tends to be the case.

Rarely ever do you see cops laid off when there's no money.

JGreb, sorry to hear about the run in with Johnny Law.  I figure there's always one or two ISP near Grangeville and even more near Lewiston.  Resort towns like McCall or Sun Valley will get you too.  Not dropping the speed a single MPH was pretty cold.

Most of the mountain and river valley roads tend to be self-regulating, so I usually don't expect to see much police presence.

XLR8 is right about Oregon -- the tickets are a million dollars and the speed limits are insanely low.  I ease across the Oregon border like a trophy buck leaving a game preserve.

Just FYI-
The resident ISP officer lives right there at Powell, that is what he does, there's only 1 road.
If there is only 1 road and he's working where's he going to be?
Just so you all know.

Does the 50 mph speed limit on that road suck for bikes? - Yup!

Yeah, they can be pretty retarded in Idaho at times.  Being pulled over for speed in a corner is really stupid.  Maybe if more people wore helmets in Idaho they'd stop being such @$$es to the rest of us.  Rolleyes

So, when you say Powell, do you mean Powell road Lewiston?  That's the only Powell I can find near Idaho.  Headscratch

Idaho does have some neat roads, and some sucky speed limits.  It would be nice to know the ones where you don't dare go over them.  I've had enough of being pulled over there.

Powell is what they call the little group of houses where the local residents live accross the highway from Lochsa Lodge, mostly Idaho Dept. of Transportaion folks.
I don't remember the mile marker on H12 but if you know where Lochsa Lodge is you get the general idea- not far down from the state border.
I guess my main point was that the officer works right there so you can expect to see a law enforcement presence every time you come through that corridor

I came across US12 middle of last month and while stopped at the rest area on Lolo pass a guy hauling his bike with his PU warned me of a leo about 20 miles down the road. Sure enough, there he was in his SUV with lights flashing and a car pulled over. I was glad to get the tip off..... and then hauled the mail for awhile after passing him.

Typically I eat lunch at the lodge and then phone in a drunk driver report for the direction I just came from.  Dispatch: "OK Mr Flintstone, which mile marker did you say again?"
