I am now the proud owner of a 2008 Ninja 250 Smile

I just got it Friday, and I haven't been able to take it out since it's not registered yet. So that's task #1 for tomorrow.

The task for today is getting insurance, probably through Progressive. Do people typically get full collision/comprehensive coverage on a bike like this? I'm trying to decide between the extra $400/yr for the better coverage vs. just squirreling away money in the bank in case I crash it. It's looking like $95/year for liability vs. $495/yr for full w/ $500 deductible.

I can't decide if it's worth it for a $3000 bike. On the one hand, I'm a newb, and probably likely to drop it. But on the other hand, if I do drop it, I don't really want the 6 year insurance increase either :P

Gorgeous bike!  That's a tough call on the insurance.  Plastics are expensive, so a small wreck could total it out pretty quickly.  Plus since it's two years old, it isn't worth $3,000.  If you can afford to lose the bike completely due to a wreck, then just go with liability.

[A] there is no typical.   since you're newb I'd get collision and skip the comprehensive.  I'd further go w/ ~$200 deductible.  just me.

I had an at fault 1 vehicle collision insurance loss two yrs ago and my rates didn't increase at all.

Hmm, interesting. I had an at-fault accident in my car and my insurance definitely did go up. Maybe it varies from state-to-state, or it's different for motorcycle insurance. Here in MA insurance is required, so that probably affects it, since you're basically stuck whether they raise the rates or not Rolleyes

Check with various insurance companies - I had State Farm in WA and my agent specifically told me that claims made on my motorcycle WOULD NOT change my rates. I was surprised, but sure enough - two claims on my two motorcycles and there was no rate change. I don't know how it is in MA or with your insurance carrier.

FWIW, State Farm suxxors in NJ, but Geico has been good (no claims here, so I can't vouch for them in that regard). It's worth it to call around to 3-4 different carriers. It doesn't take a lot of time and can save you a lot or money.

Also, it's surprising how little a lower deductible really costs. Going from $1,000 deductible to $250 was only something like $7/year  Bigok

PS - Moto ins is optional in WA

I live about an hour and a half west of you. I am very happy with Liberty Mutual for ins. (4 vehicles currently insured.) Shop around. I am not comfortable with a company that uses a dip shit or a lizard to sell their policies. Find your way out here someday and I'll show you some nice roads.

I've been pretty loyal to Progressive for years. They've been good to us. We've also tried Geico and Nationwide. Ultimately, I will go where I get the best deal.

Also, for motorcycle, right now Progressive is the best I can find for mine. I also had Dairyland Cycle (Sentry Insurance), and they were fantastic.

Best answer is to shop around, and see what you find.
