I guess I had it coming though.  I didn’t lock the steering, nor do I put a disc lock on the bike.

The bad thing about a disk lock if someone doesn't know it's there and tries to move the bike is:

a) It will probably gouge up your caliper when it suddenly hits it and,
b) The person moving the bike could drop it if the front wheel all of a sudden unexpectedly stops.

Well, I would say:  "hey, leave that bike alone"  in a real loud and threatening tone...

I'd rather you set the above statement to the music of Pink Floyd, and follow it up with the statement

"All in all it's just a, 'nother bike in the wall"

Edit - after reading further I see someone else beat me to this in a subsequent posting.

It makes me wonder what the person moving someone else's bike is thinking. Why would you do something like that in the first place? Even if they are not a motorcyclist, I cannot see them expecting a kind reaction if they are caught doing that. I am not trying to be a keyboard toughguy, but I would have trouble controlling the temper on that one. The smart response would be to call the police and avoid a physical confrontation. That would go against your bodies desire to choke to living shite out of them. At the very least, you should be allowed to Taser the offender till they shake like a porn star on overtime. It's nonlethal (most of the time) and accurately communicates your feelings on the matter.

Yeah, but let's be factual here... your bike is pretty. Many others could benefit from a little bot of damage character.  Bigsmile Lol Lol Lol

+1.  I'd record it with the cell phone and tell them to quit and call the cops if they didn't (maybe call them anyway if they give me attitude), but beating them?  Good grief- it's just a mass of metal and plastic- expensive, but metal-and-plastic all the same.  If they damage it, they pay for it through court or whatever.  No beatings needed.

Then again, I'm pretty easy-going.  My stuff is just that- stuff.   Shrug

Yes it was not a "valid" parking spot.  But that doesn't mean it's okay to move it right?

How many times have you seen bikes parked on the sidewalk or a shoulder of an indoor parking garage?  Plus, I wasn't the only one parked there.

The legality of a parking spot needs to be specified by law.  For example, in CA it's illegal to park in a Handicapped spot if you do not have a valid handicap plates.  So if you park there, you can get cited and your vehicle can get towed.  Likewise, if you park/leave your vehicle unattended in the middle of the road, it can get towed.

In my case, my bike (and other cars) were parked up against a curb without a red or yellow painted zone located in a privately owned building.  It's neither a designated parking spot but nor was it a restricted area as defined by any state or city law/ordinance.  So no.  Your argument does not apply.  But I do appreciate your point of view.

I don't know- would you rather they towed it?  I don't know the motive of the mover, but I suppose they could have had it towed.  That's what they'd do with a car that was in the wrong place (if that was the case).  Could be the dude saved you a bunch of moving and expense?  I'm just trying to figure it out.  All I do know is that simply attacking the dude will simply land one in jail.

Just because you're okay with it doesn't mean other people should.

If you were in a restaurant sitting on a table with a view, would you mind if I "moved" you over so I can sit and enjoy the view instead?

It's the same thing to other people.

There's the problem with "other people".  People do not equal stuff in my eyes, nor in the eyes of the law.  If you think assaulting a person (making one move in a booth) and "assaulting" a bike (moving it in a lot) are the same, there's a serious issue.  You're like Connie, but with bikes.   Rolleyes

I used to have a friend in High School that would regularly go out in the parking lot and move cars by lifting up the back end.  If I saw someone like him moving my bike I'd just smile and tell him I was sorry that it was in his way.

But if it is a skinny-ass severely handicapped individual, then they better start attempting to run,  I'm going to lay the worst beat down on them they ever experienced.

That's just how I roll.

Wow - so there are people that don't use their steering lock when not parked in their own garage?  Pretty ballsy.

It's kind of like leaving your car unlocked and finding someone readjusted your seat and mirrors.

You're lucky someone didn't move it a few blocks away - just to eff with you.   Lol

We used to move co-workers cars in the parking garage if they left their keys out in the open.  The look on their face was awesome when they looked out the window of the building and down onto the parking structure - "hey, that knida looks like my car, but I parked in the lower level.."   Bigsmile

Ok, I'll call you Chris.

Chris, I live in Oakland CA. It can be a rough town. There is a lot of property crime. Recently I was dining with the Mrs. when we witnessed the theft of a $2k Mountain bike from in front of the restaurant we were eating in.

We alerted the owner of the bike (who used it as his sole transportation) and I jumped in my truck as he pursued on foot. Another bystander in a mini van picked up the bike owner and followed the thief. We cornered the thief and let the bike owner beat on the thief until the thief stopped fighting and started fleeing. I then calmed the bike owner & let the ( bloody nosed ) thief go. I did stand by with a tire Iron as the thief was almost a foot taller than the bike owner.

When I returned to the restaurant the other customers & staff thanked me, as did the bike owner who declined a ride back in my truck.

I guess what I'm saying is that yes, if the situation called for it I'd go to the mat. I also agree that calling the cops is a safer and better option if it's possible. In some cases it's not or it won't fix the problem. The bike owner in my case would have been completely out of luck if we had simply called O.P.D.

Elseanno

I havent' even made it past the first page of this thread, and I'm going o nrecord to say:

Elseanno, you're my hero.

There, I said it. Wanna bet the thief thinks twice about the next bike he decides to swipe? Hopefully he thinks twice and DOESN'T.

When I was younger, I felt a stronger bond to my bikes. I guess old age has caught up to me and I stopped caring as much.  I tell co-workers, if you accidently hit my bike in the parking lot, you better make it count!  I don't want the insurance company to fix and give it back to me!!!

CLAY, you need to go back and re-read all my posts.

I never said I would attempt to assault anyone.  Confront, yes.

Nevertheless, this goes back to my original point.  You are an easygoing person and you're okay with it.  But if you read many of the other posts in here, most people feel it is wrong to move someone else's bike.  I certainly feel that way and it would anger me tremendously if someone did.

So understand there is a huge difference between your feelings and mine (and other people) over this matter.  Something trivial to you is a big deal to many others.  The moral of this post is, don't go moving bikes that don't belong to you.
