Looks like we'll be in that area sometime in the next couple weeks.  It would appear that you can rent pretty much anything in Moab so we're thinking either dirtbikes or quads.  Don't know the area and would rather not pay the extreme tour guide rates.  Anybody ride in this area a lot and want to give the nickle tour?

We're going to be there Friday-Tuesday.

There's a tremendous amount of stuff right outside of town, literally a stone's throw.
Pick up the Latitude 40 East and West maps, and do some Googling on the area. You'll come up with lots of trails based on the kind of stuff you'd like to do - then find it on the Latitude 40 maps.

If you use GPS - go to Advrider and do a search in their GPS subforum for .gpx files. There has to be tons of routes already done, that you can load up and use as a guide.

Search for places like Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim.....Slickrock, Porcupine Rim, Kane Creek, Pritchett Canyon, Hurrah Pass & Chicken Corners. Good singletrack at Sovereign, just north of Arches.

FYI - if you're planning on riding the White Rim Trail (135 miles of incredible scenery) - be forewarned that the switchbacks going down Mineral Bottom were destroyed by heavy rain some weeks ago. You can still go in at Potash Rd or Shafer Switchbacks, but it's a long out 'n back now since you can't go in or out Mineral Bottom.

In addition to the Latitude 40 maps, which are of excellent quality, this book is pretty useful:
http://www.amazon.com/ATV-Trails-Guide-Moab-UT/dp/0966497678
It gives a great overview of some good routes in the area.

The Latitude 40 maps are available at the Moab Visitors' Centre - and it has tourist friendly hours Bigok We were astonished to be able to buy our maps there on a Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy Moab.  We're planning to be back again in March. Thumbsup

Sweet.  Thanks for the advice.  We probably won't get there till middle of next week.  There's not much of a rush since the forecast isn't really spectacular for next week.  Still, I've always wanted to check this area out and after seeing that there's so much more than mountain biking available, I'm hoping to add some motorized fun to the mix.

Billo - I highly advise you to rend dirt bikes and experience them for a day or so.

A guide on day 1 might be nice as you learn the new skill set - but I know you 2 will will be roosting in 4 hours.

This is a damn the cost - must do opportunity as you will not be able to ride dirt bikes like that back here.
