Based on some advice I got here a couple of years ago I bought a Honda 919.  I liked the bike, but I had a deer encounter last week and the bike was totaled.  I am thinking about picking up a used 2007 Ducati S2R 1000 and would like to take advantage of your collective wisdom on this  bike.  If I am going to buy this particular bike, I need to act fairly rapidly.  It would not be for sport-touring, just a replacement naked bike to ride out in the country where I live.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I had the exact same bike.  Overall - fun bike.

I ended up doing a lot of mods.  Lots of CF, PCIII, FatDuc O2 manipulator, ex-box exhaust system, open clutch, lightweight flywheel, regear, clip-ons with a lowered headlight, ditched the fender and pax pegs, etc.

Great bike to flog, tiny tank, thirsty with the mods (fuel light at 110 mi), but not so great for commuting, IMO.  She didn't like under 4k rpm stock, AT ALL, mostly from being too lean.  Mods are a pain in the ass b/c it runs open loops sometimes, and closed loops sometimes, unless you get the expensive Ducati ECU.  The FatDuc O2 manipulator is cheap ($75?), and pretty much essential, and with it, she'll go down to 3,500 rpm and still be rideable.  Pretty small cockpit if you ask me, and I'm only 5'10", so try it on for size b/f you commit.

Wheelies, brakes, power, weight, sound, sex appeal, and of course, handling, are all awesome aspects.  Suspension was adequate.

Even 2-valve Ducs can be pricey to have done up for service, and mine had bad valve guides, which despite Ducati supposedly having a 'goodwill warranty" available, still cost me big time and bucks.  I'm pretty much done with Ducs for this reason alone, but I wouldn't try to talk you out of it.

Anyway, I would recommend you only get a duc if she's had recent service, and has the paperwork to prove it.  Anything in need of maintenance I wouldn't touch.  Be wary of anything that's had a ton of track days as well.

Would not go so far as to call it "amazing" but "sexy" and "fun" are certainly appropriate.  That bike has been near the top of my "wants" for a long time, but others have slipped in ahead of it.  Still want one, though.  Get it and make us jealous.

Please tell me its red.  Or even better, pearl white.

+1, probably one of my favorite bikes in the looks department, I love the high-side exhaust. I never pulled the trigger on one mainly because I wanted something with a larger fuel tank and hard bags. I would buy one of these if I had the $$ and space for more than one bike, but I don't know when that will happen so I have to have one bike that does most things reasonably well. Good luck with your decision, and if you buy it enjoy it!

I had an S4R and loved it.  Most fun you can have with your cloths on.   Lol  I had a problem maintaining self control with it and found myself doing some crazy things.   Crazy

There's a gorgeous 2009 Monster 1100s (full Ohlins, single sided swingarm etc) for sale at Proitalia for $8K!

Still under warranty, you can buy an extended warranty.

Drool  just make the decision with your heart instead of your head.  If you want a little more head - that didn't come out right - crap neither did that - consider a Speed Triple.
