So i've been out and about and found some neat places to ride.
First, the OEM tires were cracked and bald, so they needed to be replaced (I actually got stuck on a steep sandy incline becasue the bald tires dug in.  Not sure why I didn't take a pic).  I have a set of knobbies and a set of Avon Distanzias.  I didn't think the Avons would be ideal in the sandy LI soil but they really aren't bad.  I did not know they were 10 years old though! Lol  Yup, date stamp is 0701, Which apparently meand 7th week of 2001.  I had them mounted at the dealer becasue my local tire guy only does tubeless tires and I didn't feel like trying.  The dealer only charged me $54 to mount 2 tires on 2 rims. Rolleyes  I did the install myself.  The Avons are hard as hockey pucks. Bigsmile
Heres my chicken strip on the old bald tires:

So off I go.  We received a lot of rain and there were some pretty big muddy puddles.  Some folks, probably from Michigan, crashed their boats.

Some folks didn't even make it to water.

I avoided these puddles at all costs.  Why?  LI puddles are filled with ruts, car parts, cinder blocks, the occassional dead dog and handguns.  best to stay away.
These guys gave one a try.  Took two other jeeps to get this guy out. Bigsmile
I wonder if Davetheslave's brother in law knows these guys? Bigsmile

I avoided the puddles but managed to crash in to my first tree.  The only damage was my head.  I ended up grabbing the tree and using it to keep me from falling in the drink.
No damage to the KLR.
I installed an IMS tank.

The vent tube secured as only NASA could do!

I bought the IMS for one reason: crash protection.  I could care less about the extra 80 gallons of gas, it's cheaper than radiator guards and it does work.  Ask me how I know? Embarassment Lol
Held up great.

It's hunting season on LI so I was a bit nervous about trekking around the woods.  LI'ers with bow & arrows who feel a sense of entitlement ("Hey man, I PAID for my hunting license") aren't my cup of tea.  The hunters I ran in to asked me if I saw any deer and told me they like when bikes are back here 'cause it gets the deer moving.
So I left the woods and headed for Dune Road, which was flooded pretty good as well.  With salt water.  That's another great aspect to the klr; riding through salt water and not giving a shit. Lol

"No damage to the bike"....so explain to me why the front wheel is pointing right and the headlight is pointing left?  Is that a feature of the pre 2008 KLR's I missed out on?  Lol

And why we are at it, please detail how you managed to crash into a huge, no moving object in the middle of an area where I see just a few trees, you DO know you can ride AROUND them right?  Twofinger

Well, I was riding around one of those big nasty mud puddles and got sloppy in the mud.  I stayed on the gas and the rear caught and propelled me off line, into a tree.  The bike started to go left so I threw both arms around the tree and wrapped my legs around teh bike to keep from falling in to the puddle.  I was stuck there for a minute cause the bike was wedged in pretty good.    I'm sure it was quite a site but to me, a complete success.  I didn't even get my feet wet. Bigsmile

Haha! I like that one too.  It's becoming very hard not to shop around for a dual sport.
