Sportster ECU relocation
«
on:

In 04 was the new frame, in 07 the 883sl became fuel injected, in 2010 they moved the ECU from under the seat so the after market seats from 04 to 06 would again fit. Anyone one know where and how they relocated the ECU, and can it be done to an 09?

Remembering back to mine, the only place I could reasonably think of is behind and below the battery, down near the front of the rear fender.
I was able to find a proper aftermarket (Mustang) seat for mine ('08 FI). Found it on eBay for about 1/2 of retail. Worth looking around.

Here's what my pal sez FWIW
Quote
NO - it cannot be done - well let me qualify that.
The ECM was made smaller and place on the frame downtube RIGHT BEHIND THE REAR JUG.
In order to do this they changed the electrical junction box, the wiring harness, the oil tank, the rear fender and the ECM itself.
CAN you relocate it there on an 07-09 - sure if you REALLY REALLY REALLY want to waste all that money.
But realitistically, no, you can't do that.
THAT SAID, people ARE relocating them - I THINK the most common place is to cram them under the left sidecover - but I'd have to check.
But why? The only reason to move them from under the seat would be if you wanted to used a seat of an 04-06/10+ or if you wanted to use one of those spring seats. And for the later, I BELIEVE There are ECM "covers" available (not sure if they are OEM or aftermarket) to hide the ECM when you put on a spring seat.
That help?

OK, slight edit - ONE GUY DID just move it behind the rear jug and wire-tie it there - but man - I think he's asking for trouble.
At least the new one is a different shape and has a cover or shield - that rear exhaust header regularly see temps in excess of 300F, he's asking to fry his ECM.
Here's a thread that shows a whole bunch of options - one moron moved it to the swingarm right in front of the rear tire - oy fucking vey.

I kinda like the guy who installed a smaller battery and moved it on top of the battery - that wasn't a bad solution all-in-all, though, TO ME, it's still an answer to a question that didn't need to be asked.

Thanks,, The reason I wanted to move it was because I like the old fashion spring solo style seats, and none of them will fit on the 07 to 09s because of the ECU under the seat.
I will probably just go with a smaller solo Mustang or Corbin

Yeah, the whole reason I wanted the spring seat was for looks, and that is not the look I was going for.
