Looking at one that has 65,000 kilometers (a Canadian import model) on the clock; Generally decent enough shape for a 31 year old bike, and the guy is asking $500. I don't know much about these; what should a guy be on the look out for on this model?

If memory serves me, the reason many of the triples were sidelined was because
many parts, like engine bearings, were no longer available from Yamaha.
It might be a good idea to take a look at a parts fiche at BikeBandit or CheapCycleParts
and see which critical components are discontinued before you commit.

Also if these are real similar to the '80 and 81' version they have a dual petcock setup. One on each side of the tank and are known for leaking gas into the crankcase vent causing the gas / oil mixing and ruining the motor. There is a good yamaha triples forum you can check with for the fixes. Alot of real good info on there as well. The carbs were an issue as well but they can also be changed out.
