I think the first Harley racing team (1920s or 30s?) had a pig as a mascot.

Jesus Christ man... stop it. Who f'ing cares? As has been pointed out repeatedly and with gusto, Harley-Davidson doesn't make Sport-Tourers - sport ANYTHING - and this site, full of Experts on Everything, is NOT a freaking Harley forum.

Move. The. Fuck. Along.

Sheesh... don't you have like some super-epic sport bike now that you can talk about?  Headscratch

Actually HD has made sporty bikes in the past and they make a sporty bike now.   Its called the 1200X sportster.   You can even buy luggage for it and make it a "Sport Tourer"

Harley was huge into racing as this post and the picture represent.

I'm just posting FACTS

"Harley Davidson Origin of Hog nickname
Beginning in 1920 a team of farm boys down South that would become known as the "hog boys" consistently won races. The group had a hog, or pig as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the pig (a real one) on the back of their Harley and take a victory lap. In 1983, an organization was formed, taking advantage of the long-standing nickname by turning "hog" into the acronym H.O.G., for Harley Owners Group. Many Harley Davidson enthusiasts capitalize the word to make "Hog" and consider this term the sole property of H-D.

Harley Davidson attempted to trademark "hog," but in 1999 ultimately lost the case, with the appellate panel ruling that "hog" had become a generic term for large Motorcycles. Motorcycles, and is therefore unprotectable as a trademark.

In case you were wondering.  Bigsmile

The irony of them getting the nickname by whoopin butt on the race track is not wasted on me.

I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee and the local frozen custard place had a HOG sundae (named after the bike) that was really awesome.  We used to get a gallon sized version (yes really) and go over to a guy's house to get cranked up on sugar and play Dungeons and Dragons.

The whole "HOG" group thing is another example of their excellent marketing strategy.  Back when the only models were FLH's and Sportsters, FLH's were called Hogs & Garbage barges and shunned by most  riders. Those in the know wanted Sporties or Brit Iron because of their lightweight and superior handling. Along comes Vaughn Beals and his crew to buy the company back, one of the ideas is to set up an owners club to give newbies a chance to ride somewhere and feel like they belong.....Harley Owners Group is a play on the old Hog insult and presto, fast foreword a few years and "lifestyle" sales rake in more money than motorcycle sales.  Avon and Franklin Mint is selling stuffed pigs with fake leather vests and Harley Davidson plastered on them and everyone is a "Bad-Ass Biker(tm)"....

Fuckin brilliant piece of marketing. You have to hand it to those boys they damn near printed their own money for a long time.
