Okay. the short version is a deer took me out and totalled my original paint, original bodywork '86 gsxr 1100.  State Farm wants me to settle for $2200 plus a bit here and there.  I want to prove to them the bike is worth more.  They claim to have found a bike just like mine in South Carolina for $2200 (hence thier valuation).  I would love to have printable/faxable ad's for '86s showing thier value to be higher.  I've searched west coast craigslist as well as cycletrader and ebay.  Nothing like my bike out there, mostly projects, so please help me find some ads to substatiate my claim the bike is worth more than state farm claims.  Thanks in advance.

Hate to hear this. That's an iconic bike.

Kelly Blue Book retail value is only $2,075. Hard to believe.

Do you have pictures and maintenance records that might increase the value?

Not just a 25 yo Suzuki. A 25 year old first edition industry changing icon.

Three years newer:

Clean 1991 for $3900 - http://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/1988653671.html

However, found what may be a fair example (but maybe not) '93 for $2000.00
http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org/mcy/1946583002.html

Unless you insured for an agreed value $2200 may be a decent deal. Good luck.  Thumbsup

The 91 and 93 aren't even the same as the 86. Hell the 89 I pointed out for 5500 isn't really either. The issue I think is that the 86 is the first GSXR in the US. It's a game changer. One the way to becoming a classic, if it's not already.

In 1984 the GSXR-750 was introduced for street sales. Clever racers smuggled them into the US from Canada. The frame was checked baggage and the engine had a seat.

In '85 both the 750 and 1100 were officially released in the US. Suzuki put up racing contingency money for both bikes. Do well at various races around the country and one could make a living. Doug Polen proved as much. Doug traveled the country with one of each in the back of his van. The rest is history.

First generation Gixxers are to be admired and valued, if you can find a clean one.

Really sorry to hear about the accident, Wade. Hope you're OK.

Ask around at OldSkoolSuzuki.info. I remember FastCat saying good things about that board.

Thank you for the concern, I'm mostly okay, a little banged up on my left side.  I'm just hoping to not get hosed by the insurance company.

They claim to have found a bike just like mine in South Carolina for $2200 (hence thier valuation).

Tell them to buy you the South Carolina bike  Shrug .

Its hard to place value outside of comps if they are availible, hope it works out for you.

It's really hard to place a value on old bikes, just because there aren't many around to compare them too.  Unfortunately, unless you insured for an agreed value, you're not going to get much more than that for it.  You might be able to negotiate another $500 or so, but I'd be shocked if you get what it's worth.  Future lesson - with older, mint condition bikes make sure you insure it at a set value.  Might cost a bit more in premiums, but worth the risk if you wreck it.

Tell 'em bull shit especially if your was in real good shape. Also ask them for a location of the said 86 GSXR, I'll go take pics of it and find out the condition for you. If it's in good enough condition, I'll give you first dibs on the bike and if you don't want it I may buy it. I'd be really interested in a SC GSXR that hasn't been stretched, pimped and dragged. Feel free to PM me if you need help.

You can also point them to this restored 86 750 Limited Ed. going for $9500 bid start.

I know it's more collectible than the 11 but early slab sides in good condition are extremely rare.

ps. there is a clapped out looking 86 1100 on the WERA forums missing parts for $1500, FYI.

I really hate to burst your bubble, but $2200 is a good price for an older 1100. I can score excellent examples all day for under $2000.

The Oil Boilers are a great bike, but by far not rare or exotic.

Wow Zixxer, I made a mistake when I bought mine, seems like left coast bikes go for a lot more than that.  I looked for awhile too, months and months to find a good clean stock original bike for $4500 and thought that was alright.  So you can get good clean ones for $2k?  I would be interested in talking to you about possibilities.  I would like something as close to stock as possible.  Mine had a Vance and Hines pipe and a tinted windscreen that was it.  Thanks for all you input everyone.

You are right about the West Coast, they tend to sell for more because of the people wanting them for customs and drags.

If you are seriously looking for one, I'll keep an eye open. Right now is a bad time to buy them in good shape, because most are already stored. They pop up here and there. Come spring, they are all over.

I went through something similar when my Hawk GT got wrecked.

Me: "But it's a cult bike!  Look at that single-sided swingarm!  And that aluminum frame!  This bike was ahead of it's time!"

Insurance company: "Huh?  It's an 18 year old bike, here's $1200"

I did manage to argue them up to about $2K, I think, but that was it.
