I'm sure if you're REALLY tired of slammed, stretched, chrome-plated 'Busas
this would do in a pinch.  Not really what I picture when I think "Ducati".

What ever happened to the Streetfighter? I liked that one.

Gawd that is just awful ugly IMHO.  And what is that hanging over the center of the rear tire, the devils tale?  Where is the rest of the bike, the back part?  That red stripe between the two taillights looks like a tampon on something.

The headers are pretty nice, beyond that I am guessing FAIL, diminishes the brand a bit too I think.

I'd pass on the chrome wheels, but I think it's a pretty cool bike.  Always wanted a VMax, and I like the Vrod with mid controls.

I'll bet this thing flies.  If it handles, even better.  I like it.

That's why you own more than one bike, silly.  One for practicality (commuting, touring, etc.) and one for cuising with your phone and wallet in your pockets.

I like how Ducati is really expanding their line up - but I think they need to just stay clear of the cruiser market.

It's kinda like Porsche building an SUV...  sure, it's fast, but would you rea  lly want to (could you?) go off-roading with it?

How is that bike anything like a cruiser?  Because it's a little longer?  I like Ducati, never owned one, ridden many.  I can't see this bike being anything like a cruiser.  More like an 1198 with even more relaxed ergos than the Multi, plus lower to the ground.  I think this is more like the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 (without the bags) than a cruiser.  Look at it...yes, it has chrome wheels and may be a little longer than necessary, but a cruiser?  Nahh...

How big is that rear wheel?
You know.......this may not be a bad thing.
If these guys figured out how to slap that much rubber on the ass of this bike maybe the next ST bikes will have larger tires too.
More tire = more contact patch = more stable

Bold design for a Ducati.  When I talk to family in England all they tell me about motorcycles is the number of Harleys and Harleylike bikes on the roads all over Europe.  I imagine marketing is pushing for this bike and hats off to Ducati for not going down the traditional cruiser look.

Vmaxy is good and likely would be a hoot to ride.

Edit ... the photo above is not very flattering  Crazy

240-section rear  = 9.4" wide.   Sure it's stable in a straight line, but corner handling is compromised.  Ducati says they got around this somehow in their design - but I don't buy it on first blush.

The Triumph Rocket III also uses this size tire.

Zactly! (I was wondering how to put it) . . .seems it is answering a question no one has asked.

Of course, I thought that about the first BMW GS, and the first Gold Wing (pre-tupperware), so that COULD indicate a smashing success in the making.

The Diavel is Ducati's intepretation of a power cruiser. If any of you have been to the European continent recently, you would have noticed that the cruiser market is exploding over there. When I was in Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland I saw more cruisers than other bikes.

So this is Ducati's take on it. They already make hard core sport bikes, hard core street bikes, naked bikes, sport touring bikes. So why make another one of those?
Think of this as the anti-Harley. Ya want a power cruiser? All the other options are some motor, some chassis , heavy weight and that's about it.
Ya want a Ducati power cruiser? Well then step up to the next generation. Ya got the strongest motor/weight ratio. Ya got killer brakes. Ya got class leading suspension. Ya got traction control. Ya got a slipper clutch. Ya got the hottest, most technologically advanced cruiser around.
Don't like this bike? Cool, then step up to their 1198, MS1200, Street Fighter, Hypomotard, etc.
Ducati's giving you choices. Leading edge choices. Or would you prefer they made a 750lb, 110hp bike?

456lbs and 160hp is extremely impressive for a power cruiser.  No heavy weight shaft for this bike.

I bet these sell great.  For a lot of people owning a Ducati is all about image and getting attention.  This motorcycle is bold and attention getting and I'm sure it would be great for cruising around town in and showing off what you can afford.

It would be one of the last motorcycles I'd ever buy but I'm not dumb enough to think Ducati was thinking of me when they designed it.

I hope it's not a flop for Ducati and they are able to hit their market.  If Ducati can take profits made on this beast and turn that cash into R&D for new core bike and racing, I'm all for it.   Bigok

Meh. The front looks too bulbous to me with all that plastic around the radiator and the chin spoiler and whatnot. It kinda reminds me of the Griso: sporty looking, long, standard ergos. No doubt it goes like stink with that engine.

Not what I'm looking for in a bike, but at least the Euro brands are bringing new models to market. Give them props for trying  Thumbsup

Considering the Duc I ride, there is no way I will call that one ugly. Lol
I will say that the black and red is so much better looking than the one the beautiful Ducati babe is on.

Don't like bikes with short tails.  They just look stupid to me.  Don't like the gas tank either.  Other than that, not a bad effort.  Could use underseat exhaust, but the single-sided swingarm is always a welcome presence.

It took THREE pages for somebody (Garry) to finally point out that it looks like the Moto Guzzi Griso!

Not my kind of bike, and like Fun Dog, I'm not a fan of short tails. The Speed Triple has a tail that look like the rear end of poodle. What passenger will have the courage to balance her butt on that?

I mis-spoke.  Most stainless in the 300 series isn't magnetic because it has nickle in it to improve the corrosion resistance provided by the chromium.  If you have chromium only, then it can be magnetic.

All things considered, I'd rather have a Guzzi Griso 8V.  A little cheaper, less gimmicky styling, seems more "honest" somehow.  About 30 HP less, though.  Shrug

Agreed.  The Griso looks fantastic, and it has been out for 5 years now.  Rides great too and you don't have to deal with weird size tyres, or a chain..
My Harley (RIP) made me realize how nice it is to have a bike that needs next to zero maintenance, and has tyres that last a looong time.
The Griso is a version of that.  Plus I know I won't get tired of looking at it.  Plus it's going to handle better than the Diavel.
Plus.. I'm rambling... it's Friday and I'm tired!!

Saw, touched, sat on one at the Dallas MC show.  Ergos similar to my 1200 sport, upright with slight forward lean.  Felt lighter, but no 6 gal. of gas! (all bikes there had no oil or gas, fire marshall thing, I think)
The info stands said $12K+ on the standard and $14K+ on the carbon model. They only had two there.  Quite a bit less than the others, Street Fighter, Monster...
Huge size back tire, not sure how well they can make that work but reminded me of a customer chopper, the back tire did!
For those that like to use the pillion pegs for alternate position, they fold out from the seat cowling from back to front.  Put your foot there and it folds back up!
Did not think the wheels were bright chrome, more like a black chrome coating.  Overall the bike does look cool in a Griso kind of way.  Too each his own.  Bigok

I sat on a couple and had a good look from all angles at the recent motorcycle show in Birmingham, UK and although I am not really in the market for this type of bike I have to give it a  Thumbsup . It is a new concept, a power cruiser which isn't just about the horsepower although with 160hp it will have the legs of just about any of the competition. The V-Max is no competition, although it makes more power it also weighs about 50% more than the Diavel and costs 30% more here in the UK and looks pig-ugly as well. They must be selling'em by the pound! Lol

The Diavel's electronics package is a tour de force, truly awesome, and the whole bike seems to bring 21st century technology to a class of bike which previously was just all about horsepower and bragging rights. Of course, I haven't ridden one yet but I look forward to getting a demo on one in 2011!

Here's a couple of videos about the design and technology...

Attention Harley, that's how you build a vtwin power cruiser.

I like the new Vmax much better though. It nails the musclebike look, and the V4 sounds like a BB Chevy. Not to mention how understressed that 1,670 cc mill is at only 197hp. Lots of potential there, as I am seeing exhaust, ECM tuned bikes putting down 200+whp.

For a musclebike V4>Twin. Nice effort Ducati, but I'll take the original hot rod bike.

Man those are some wide ass bars for a Ducati.  Crazy They prolly needed to get some wider drafting paper in to the design crew for those babies.

I noticed the wide beachcomber-style handlebars are the current rage among Italian Harlistas.

I reckon Ducati is probably aiming this bike at them.

I'm betting that this thing takes off and sells well. There are a lot of older, inseam challanged guys with $ who have always wanted a Ducati, but didn't want a high maintenance bike, or couldn't stand the committed riding possition of the sport bikes, or didn't have enough inseam to ride the Multistrada.

Yes it has been following the IMS.   Both a black carbon and a red standard are on tour.  We should start seeing them late Feb, early March.  Maybe we're a bit different but we're excited for them to arrive!

Well The fokls at Motor cyclist said Ducati have done their homework and made a wide tire handle like a sport bike. ( That's what they said)
I like the Streetfighter but I don't want any DUCATI with a plastic tank. They haven't ever fixed the "spread" problem.

While the looks aren't great, I think it's much better than a VMAX Crazy or a B-King. Although some of the B-Kings with different exhaust aren't "too" bad. All that said the top speed isn't "limited" like a MAX! As it will still handle at speed!!

I wish they hadn't gone that far with the rear tire! But I still like the bike!!

And it doesn't have a "DUCK BILL" sticking out front!! Inlove Rolleyes

Of course if Ducati makes a Streetfighter with a metal gas tank, it would make the choice much easier!

Heres the first official rider review I have seen pop up.  Seems like they absolutely loved it. Heres the end quote:

"The question of exactly what it is – performance cruiser, Monster on steroids, street drag bike or whatever – ends up as irrelevant, overshadowed by something much more simple to understand: this is the most exciting and rewarding motorcycle you can buy".

Ditto on getting converted.  Initial ride reports are promising.  Steel skinned tank, the rear LED lights, the aluminum mirrors... first class stuff.  Of course the model I want is the most expensive... the red Carbon.

FJR is for sale, and I'm setting aside money.  I might still end up with a 2011 Speed Triple, or a 2011 K1300S, but the Diavel is in serious contention.  I will be calling my local dealer next week to see when they expect to add one to their stable of demo bikes.

I can't wait to test this thing.  I fell in love with the Multistrada 1200S.

That long wheelbase and big honkin' rear tire still makes me wonder about handling, though.

Yeah, even the most glowing reports about it seem to bring up the low-speed issues.  Not glaring, but present, and something to keep in mind.  Bet it'd be a handful going up Stelvio Pass, for instance.

Then again, with the twist that mill has, the low weight and strong braking power combined, you can "make up the time" between the slow bends better than most bikes out there.  Smile

Nice road.  Where is it?

The guy seemed fairly hesitant to lean into the corners.  He slowed down each time.  Was it the rider or the bike?

It was Mulholland up to the Rock store and back down to the PCH.  The camera I was using is a contour and it has a very wide angle lens.. mounted on the side of my RF1100 caused it to aim left a little...  Never actually crossed or touched the yellow  Bigsmile

here's the route we took

Just my opinion,

I've noticed an increase in Harleys in Europe in the past 10 years.

my take is that, Ducati is aiming this bike to take a cut of that portion of the market.

I think it's a better looking and just overall better executed V-Max than well, a V-Max. It Won't appeal to a lot of people but it will appel to those looking for a muscle bike. And like I said it is well done in my opinion, in person it looks much better and if you sit on one it's simply amazing. The thing is so lite that you will go to heft it up and you'll just about throw it over and loose it.

Yamaha just flat out missed the boat with the V-max and the it took the italians to show the Japanese how to make a true light weight "muscle bike". I like it and will most likely own one some day.
