That's a pretty good price - slightly less than a Speed Triple, with similar specs and single-sided swingarm.  I look forward to you buying one, Smoker!   Wink

Test rides fellows.  Why buy if you're not sure it's going to work out?

Back on topic.  I'm amazed that they put a competitive price on this thing.  So how will they screw this up?  My guess is they will underestimate demand and create a false shortage.  If there's a way to screw up the sales of this thing Big Red will find it.

The only way to make it work for Andrea is to keep the FJR. My next bike will be a solo rig only. I'm buying/building her some new furniture for Christmas, so hopefully that will butter her up enough for me to spend some money next year. I really like this bike, but I'm not sure it's the one I really want. I think I'll wait and see how the Kawi and the new Speedy do over the next few months, and make a decision then.

I agree that the new tricolor Euro-only scheme is a bit too "Team Honda"; however, I was referring to the straight mono-colored bikes as offered to the Brits and Euros.

In Canada, apparently $10,999 translates to $13,999.
Despite the fact that the CDN dollar has been at par or within 10% for the last year.
Awesome.

Honda could price 'em at $7999.00 and they'd still sit on showroom floors and in warehouses. How many riders purchased a new CB1000f "Big One" when they were released in the fall of 1993? Or a new Bandit 1200S in the spring of 1997? Or a new ZRX1100 in the spring of 1999? Or a Honda 919? Yamaha FZ-1? This model will be another dismal selling naked bike effort from Honda. Not saying it won't be a great bike with typical Honda attention to detail, fit and finish, and polish. The motorcycling press will praise the bike and enthusiasts will comment on how much they like it. But the real test is how many folks actually get off their wallets and purchase one. I'm betting that it'll be imported for one, maybe two years, before Honda drops it in the US.

I'm in the segment of people seriously considering this bike.  I plan to be buying new likely next winter/spring.  Right now, naked liter bikes is a hot segment with lots of choice... At 10,999 I would probably walk away with this.  At 13,999 CDN, I'd rather have a speed triple, which will probably be similarly priced.

Aside from the Fz1 (is it a poor seller?) the other bikes on your list had issues:

1/ CB1000F was a huge bike that Honda decided to castrate with a 90hp motor.
2/ Bandit 1200s ( I guess that is the nekkid version?) just looked too plain, old styled with/out the styled part, low rent.
3/ ZRX bikes - 1100 was under powered, the 1200 rocked but the styling just appealed to old codgers who remembered who Wes Cooley was.  And those old farts had already moved on to BMWs...   Razz
4/ 919 - waaay overpriced, waaay underspecced.  Part of the 'decline' that ailed Honda recently when they think that the name on the tank meant they could name their price.

The CB1000r is priced competitively, looks really cool and modern with the led marker headlight, single sided swingarm and low pipe.  Nice power too.  I've seen them in Europe and they are head turners.  A tough, toight bike.

That was then and this is now.  Compare the prices of sportbikes from Japan....600's are in the $10k range and 1000's are in the $13k range.  So $11k for the CB1000 is reasonable.  In addition, the CB1000 has a thoroughly modern chassis and engine, plus up to date looks.  It's not a numbed down, 2 -3 generations behind engine with boring looks (like the 919 was).

Time will tell.  Suzuki's B-King with 100% modern everything failed but that bike was a $14k bike!

Just got me a 07 919 couple months ago.  First Honda and first naked bike in 10 years of riding.  Gotta say, I'm very impressed.  Honda quality and this thing runs like a scalded dog.  Of course, I didn't pay MSRP for it either.

Gimme a couple years and a used CB1000R might be in my future.

I, sadly, agree with this post.
I do think at $7999 they would have essentially recreated the CB750 though (IE: sell as many as they could produce).

Maybe a little too abstract Wizard of Oz reference?  Ignore the man behind the curtain = ignore reality..

Point being, I agree with you but stuff like that just shows how out of whack some of Honda's pricing is.
Case in point, you can have this CB1000R or for $4K more you can have the DN01 super scoot...

Yes. I thought it was something like that.

I am going to vent here a little and not so much about pricing, but more about the models we get.

There was once a time when I told all my friends "The year they release a litre VFR, I will buy one".

Well, I was told to put my money where my maw was. What I was expecting was our normal VFR with a larger engine. Of course, we all know what we got.

Regardless, I can't afford either. It's just a big tease.  Mad2

I'm done.

I don't know if this is posted elsewhere... probaby.

CBR250R.
2011 MSRPs: $3,999 (Standard Version), $4,499 (ABS Version)

THAT is even BIGGER news. That's farking COOL!!  Does this mark the end of the $5899 Ninja 250s? Kawasaki dealers with their additional dealer markup just got a smack down. GO HONDA!!  Lol

It's interesting to note that some mfgs (Honda with this 250, Ducati with the 796) charge only $500 for anti-lock brakes, while others charge $1000 or more.

This 250 really looks like a sweet piece for the money.

It's simple Honda-nomics. They get new riders hooked with their inexpensive, great starter bikes, sell them on their "most reliable bike ever" hogwash and BAM! There ya go. You have a new generation of riders who will buy your overpriced motorcycles for the rest of their lives... or until they wisen up. They had me for a while. Not anymore Larry

I may give up on trying to find a true naked sport bike and build my own from an actual sport bike.

There are plenty "test subjects" out there as long as you don't care about the oem plastics.

The 954's and zx9's are pretty cheap.

Not true anymore.

The absolute crapola Rebel 250 costs the same as the CBR250!!!http://powersports.honda.com/2009/rebel.aspx

So it's been a loooooong time since Honda has had a decent, affordable entry bike.
Things are a-changing..

True. But will it work on the next generation of riders? Only time will tell.

Ok - maybe it's not public knowledge, but why is Honda (until recently) so overpriced???  I know some people have it in their heads that they're the most reliable and best built, but if that's not so, then have they just been asking for more over cost than other companies?

With the newer bikes like the 250 being priced better, do you think any quality will suffer, or are they just looking to make more sales with smaller margins?

Yes.  I guess they figured that they could name their price and the loyalists will just keep on buying.
When I bought my Wing 1800 in 2002 it cost about $17K.  It now costs about $23K, an increase of $6000 for basically an unchanged bike with paid for tooling.

The CB1000R and 250R bode well for future pricing structures.  What is nutty is Honda currently is asking about $400 more for its 150cc SH150 scooter than the CBR250!!!
