I've justified to myself why it's perfect.  Someone needs to snap me out of my lust.    


-Similar power to my VFR, but 150lbs lighter

-I prefer an engine that I can flog a bit.  Let my buddies have the 140hp+ bikes while they chase me - I'd kill, hurt or get myself in trouble with that type of power and don't think it's as fun.  

-300 miles is a typical full day ride    

-I don't ride 2up

-I'm a road snob - only interested in heading to the mountains and riding guaranteed great roads.    

-Living in Charlotte, most rides include 40 miles of interstate, 40 miles of country roads, 100 miles+ of great mountain roads and then back through the first sections of the country and interstate.  

-"touring" is typically 3-4 days playing in the NC, GA, TN mountains on very technical roads.  Tank bag and Tail pack would get the job done.

-At most, interstate stretches are 100 miles.    


Only drawback I can think of is that I'd like to be able to camp, when in reality, I haven't used my camping equipment in years.  I guess you can load up any bike when needed.

Buy it - you will not regret it  Thumbsup  They are outstanding bikes with one exception - the original RR units are failing so have them replace it with the new MOSFET unit.  I had mine replaced and no issues.

To carry stuff, get a Kreiga tailbag or Ventura rack and your golden.  This is a bike that will have you finding ways to extend your rides and always leave you giggling.

You're done, hit, screwed, kapoot. Once you get the Triumph Lust you can't escape it. There's no sense in fighting it. I'm speaking from experience, by the way. So buy the damn thing. Also, I've bungee'd, strapped and rigged all kinds of crap on my naked bikes over the years so don't let luggage deter you.

Sorry, I swapped from 8 years ownership of a CBR1100xx Blackbird to a Triple and I LOVE it to bits.  If you want to see a justification why you SHOULD buy one, here's a couple of blog reports from my perspective after a year of ownership:

Sounds like a plan.  After a year I'm still loving my STR.  Excellent bike and quite the contrast to a VFR.  Prepare for your front wheel getting light a lot more often.  

I'm a practical guy and prefer having an ugly topbox on the back.  Added a center stand, aux outlets, visor/flyscreen, and heated grips.  Just yesterday I received a new Sargent seat which should make long travels easier on the derrière.

I test rode one this past weekend. Although I looked like a log on a bump, that bike was just stupid fun. What a great motor.  So nimble, great revving engine, after 8k start holding on. wow. Nothing cooler than the little blue red line lights.... Bigsmile

Your buddies on the 140hp bikes may have trouble keeping up when the road is tight.  The Street Triple carves corners so easily.  In straighter runs the bigger bikes will regain their advantage.  I have bumped off the rev limiter keeping up with more powerful bikes - sometimes it takes all it's got!  But that is the fun.

That said, if you keep the revs down a bit it will easily achieve 45-50mpg which can give it reasonable touring range.  And it runs on 87 octane, which is nice.   Thumbsup

Do you guys know of anyone that's used TuneECU to unlock the horses we know are there?  I.E., has anyone tuned their STriple to pump out the power of a Daytona 675?  I know it doesn't *need* it, but that'd be pretty sweet.

I don't have a Street Triple but I have a Daytona 675 and an older Speed Triple.

That 675cc engine is the sweetest I've ever owned, and as good as any I've ever ridden, and I've ridden many. And with my Speed Triple, I've done all the things you described, including camping (though there was that time my sleeping bag fell off on the highway, but I normally don't mention that). The Street Triple will do everything my old Speedy has done ... only better.

I can see no flaw in your thinking. It appears you need to buy one.

I love my Street Triple R.  11k miles later I still don't regret the purchase.  It does everything except off road.  I love it.  I cannot recommend anything more than my Triumph

Actually, as someone who recently quit the habit as well, it is quite healthy.  Anything that forces you to cut ciggys out of your life is a probably a good thing (unless it's crack or something).  I quit when I fell in love with mountain biking and realized that quitting would not only greatly improve my cardiovascular performance it would also give me more money to spend on my mtb goodies.

Good luck man, it sucks for a little but then it gets easier.

edited to add...the street triple is hawt and I want one too

The Kreiga tailbag looks like the way to go.  The US40 holds more than the hard bags on my VFR.  The multi component approach of the US40 (US20+ the 2 US10 bags) make it easy to take a smaller bag too.

I've found that the 1st 8 days have been pretty easy.  Substituting one obsession (smoking) with another obsession as an incentive (Street Triple) has made it easy to divert my attention.  Not even chewing as much nicotine gum as my previous unsuccessful attempts.

I did the deed and now own a new 2010 Matte Blazing Orange.  Dealership in Daytona is dumping inventory to while already taking delivery of the 2012 models.  Will look exactly like this with the accessories I'm buying.

Woooot!  Big congrats Gradus!  Banana Were there any incentives on the accessories?  


I was able to get 10% off of the accessories, which they said this dealer (BMW, Ducati, Triumph M/C of Daytona) rarely provides.  Given the discounted price on the bike, they said there was no chance in hell of the 20% I was asking.  The OTD price was $8,593.50.  I'll have title and tax to pay in NC.  I can go pick it up, have it delivered or will have a semi-retired friend who is glad to have the job.  

(over analyzing side steps in)  It's a great deal relative to other 2010 leftovers.  But really only $1000 less than the new 2012's after tax, tag and dealing with picking it up.  The important part is that this is exactly what I wanted, paid in full, and I'm happy with the deal!

I may have been misleading - that OTD price is before accessories.  You likely already figured that part.  

The bike popped up on Ebay with a buy it now MSRP of $7995.  Jumped all over it.
