Simple?  Headscratch what were all the adjustments when he just started to get it warmed up? I assume adjusting oil pump, fuel pump, clutch, etc. And what was with pulling what looked like the dipstick up? I'm sure it was something other than a dipstick. Frankly compared to our modern bikes, that looked like a real pain in the ass to operate!

But cool, yes. I find it amazing that anything almost 100 yrs old still runs.

throttle on the right bar, spark advance on the left bar, manual choke with the "dipstick", petcock for the carb.  nothing too fancy, just very simplistic wonderful early engine technology.  very mechanical.  brilliance when you think of what went into making an old engine like that work.

and exposed pushrods are just fecking cool  Bigsmile

I wish he would have kept taking and discussing the odds and ends involved in getting the engine to fire.

Way cool! Modern bikes are much easier to operate, for sure. I also appreciate the all-original patina. It wouldn't look right if it was all clean and shiny. Many of the bikes at HD's museum in Milwaukee sport worn paint, grips, and tires. Thumbsup While thoroughly restored paint, new tires, etc. are nice, any vehicle is "all original" only once. Oh, and am I the only one to notice? It sounds just like the modern ones, except it seems to idle fine on its own and is perhaps the only HD in existence with original pipes... Lol

6:01        Verify oil flow via sight glass
6:05        Adjust throttle for starting
6:13        Adjust (retard) spark for starting
6:18        Pedal to start
6:25        Lean mixture for idle
6:58        Adjustable cutout for exhaust
7:28        Another mixture adjustment-warming up


A couple cool items about this bike. At 8:29 pause the video and look at the tires. The tread is formed to say "no skid",cool original rubber. At 9:02 he checks the il flow again. Riding old motorcycles is definitely a activity you actively participate in. I've ridden some old iron and it's nitimidating at first but becomes routine after awhile.

OMG my grand-pa had one of these. The only difference was he didn’t have the rear seat and the oil sight glass. His also ran perfectly and all original from the factory. The bad part was he sold it, because me and my brothers and one sister wear fighingt over who was going to get it.
