Most come to the FJR from something else, like the ST1300.

My case also. Very happy too. The st13 had one advantage, not a big one, it seemed to turn in slightly better. The rake and trail specs verify that. But then the Feej doesn't get all wishy washy in the front when passing semi's...
Just my .02, other opinions will differ.

Despite the disparinging remarks "County" typically makes about FJR's, both are equally entertaining bikes. I currently own a 2005 FJR, but I have ridden the ST1300 as well. It depends much on what you want to do...
If long distance comfort is your thing, go with the ST1300. But if you want to go a bit more sporty, while still being able to rack up some miles and bring stuff with you, go with the FJR13000.
Currently, there are some smokin deals on used FJR1300's. You can get a used low milage 2006 or 2007 model with a few farkles for around $7,000 maybe less...

either are great bikes so it really comes down to how well does one fit you versus the other?
I think the ST is better if you are going to be carrying a passenger because it does have more room for them.
for me, being a smaller guy, the FJR has fit me very well for 78k miles.

Another thing to be aware of is that the fjr has a stronger motor.
They are known to have a slight buzziness at about 4k. Read where one owner ran a lot of miles in that range trying to get it to "smooth out".
I've been doing the same for almost, guessing, one thousand miles. It's not good on gas to be cruising in second at say 45 mph, or third at 65 mph. And of course you want to run it up and down the range a bit too, even into the very high rpm's.
But can say it seems to have definitely helped. The engine "spins up" much easier now. Came out of a gas station the other day and whacked it open in second and the rear started going side to side, almost breaking loose.
It seems possible when people break these in (bought mine used) they're not using the higher revs much at all. Maybe even more of a "cruiser" mentality? Go up 1k rpm, shift, go up another 1k, shift, go up another 1k, shift... you know what I mean.
Yes can say the slight "vibe ness" is lessening.

yeah, the FJR motor is never going to be as smooth vibration-wise, as the sewing machine smoothness of the ST.
So if silky smooth is what you want - get the ST and be done with it.
But, some, including me, say that is what makes the FJR "feel" better - that coarseness gives it more of a visceral, raw feeling.
You know, the feeling I get when I get on the bike and turn it on - it returns the favor..

I've ridden the 1st gen FJR, and found it to turn a little slower. The ST1300 has more plastic, so it
may
have better wind protection. Frankly, the differences are too small to care really - buy either you'll be happy. If buying used, buy whatever is in better shape.

Thanks all for the input, a dealer has a 2009 st with anti lock breaks asking 13.900.00 is this a good deal? He is only offering me 6000.00 for a 206 roadliner with 4800 miles on it

I'd say definitely no, not a good deal eddie. That sounds like retail price for a bike that's almost 2 yrs old. It's certainly not uncommon for dealers to try to continue to get retail while they sit on the showroom floor.
I'd check craigslist and ebay. Dealers with new will sometimes advertise there too. I've heard of new ST's with abs going for 12.5, and that was current model year. Somewhere in that area would be a decent price.
enjoy,

I find the ST1300 a little lower to the ground, not the seat or screen but the whole bike. It feels like you are sitting on top of it. The FJR feels more like you are sitting in it. The Ergos of both bikes are as close to perfect as I've found. The choice would be hard for me because I like the ST's tip over protection and motor but the FJR looks good with the bags off and the trunk options look much better. Either one get the Staintune slip-ons.

Both the Feejer and the ST1300 are great sport-touring bikes. I've had both and I now ride an '07 FJR, which is Gen II.
Here are some of the major differences:
- The ST is 90 lbs heavier than the FJR
- The ST has a higher center of gravity
- The ST is silky smooth, whereas the FJR has a very slight buzz
- The ST has great tip-over protection
- The FJR has 20 more HP, better suspension, and better brakes
- The rider leans forward a bit more than the ST
- The FJR creates much less windshield turbulence and is more stable in dirty air
- '06 and '07 FJRs have a driveline abruptness issue, easily resolved with a power commander
- ST is roomier with a very long seat
I wrote up a comparison on the ST forum shortly after getting my FJR, which you can read at:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?65671-Previous-ST-Owner-Comments-on-His-New-FJR-(long
!)
The FJR is obviously more sport-biased than the ST. However, it's a great sport-touring ride with a few minor mods. Mine has risers and a Rifle windshield, and I actually find it more comfortable than the ST. Note that there were significant changes introduced on the Gen II bikes in '06. Gen Is were much hotter, a very small number had a valve tick problem, they have a shorter wheelbase, and a bit faster (lower gearing) than the Gen IIs.
Hope this helps.
