BMW Motorcycles to Offer SIRIUS Satellite Radio as Standard Equipment

According to a joint announcement made by BMW Motorcycles and SIRIUS XM Radio, BMW Motorcycles will offer SIRIUS as standard equipment on new radio-equipped Model Year 2011 R 1200 RT, K 1600 GT, and K 1600 GTL (News - Alert) Touring Motorcycles, beginning with January 2011 production.

With the purchase of every new radio-equipped RT, GT and GTL Touring Motorcycles produced from January 2011, BMW Motorcycle will include an introductory one-year subscription to the "SIRIUS Everything" package.

"BMW Motorcycle owners expect exceptional performance and our customers seek out the best riding experiences," said Pieter de Waal, vice president of BMW Motorcycles, in a recent press release.  "Audio entertainment is one of the pleasures of riding a Touring Motorcycle, and we are very excited to have SIRIUS become standard equipment on our new Touring Motorcycles, providing the perfect soundtrack for the perfect ride."

"BMW Motorcycle sets the standard for high performance and style, and now their customers are able to enjoy the premium audio entertainment experience of SIRIUS," said Steve Cook, group vice president and general manager of the Automotive Division at SIRIUS XM Radio, in a statement.  "We are thrilled to provide BMW Motorcycle customers with more than 135 channels of unique, fun, and memorable programming to experience the excitement of the open road."

The "SIRIUS Everything" package delivers more than 135 channels of premier sports, news, talk, entertainment and commercial-free music programming plus traffic and weather information.

All new Model Year 2011 R 1200 RT, K 1600 GT, and K 1600 GTL Touring Motorcycles will include a factory-equipped satellite radio and a one-year introductory subscription to the "SIRIUS Everything" package. After the introductory one-year subscription, the SIRIUS service will be subject to the standard rates.

SIRIUS XM offers an array of content from some of the biggest names in entertainment, as well as from professional sports leagues, major colleges, and national news and talk providers.

What if I want a bike without Sirius?
I call BS, one more reason to charge higher MSRP's for sh*t not everybody wants anyway.

I'll add my own audio/comm farkles if I want them, thank you.

I have no use for Sirius satellite radio.

They make it sound like they're doing you a favor. Reality is it's a moneymaking deal for BMW and Sirius.

Make it an available option for those who want it, that's fine but to put it on every bike as "standard" and then make you buy a subscription package is a total ASS MOVE by BMW.

Pretty soon I'll be able to buy an M3 for the price of one of the BMW touring bikes at this rate.

Do you have the same problems with all the cars that come standard with satellite radio and a free one-year subscription?

Yes because I have no use for Satellite radio and I'd have a dead boat anchor taking up dash accessory space in the very likely event that I wouldn't resubscribe
at 150 bucks a year for a freaking radio. Not everybody loves these things.

To me having a factory audio-system sounds like a good feature for touring bikes.

That works with what, only BMW's System 5 Bluetooth helmets at $900 a pop?


To me this concept is the same as BMW picking up the guts from a Garmin GPS, repacking it with a roundel, and charging $1100 bucks for an optional BMW Nav system.
