I am looking for a cheap GPS I can use while trail riding.  Something I can set a waypoint in when I enter a trail head that will help me find my way out, should I get lost.

I do not want to use my Quest for fear of breaking it in a get off, so something "displosable" would be nice.  Waterproof too, I do not need routing, just waypoint settings and tracking.

You can get Garmin Etrex on ebay for cheap.  I think I picked mine up for under 50 bucks.  Some of the newer Etrex actually have a rudimentary mapping feature (mostly major interstates ands highways)

Yep, the Etrex seems to be exactly what I want.  Basic waypoint tracking and trackback to get you out of the woods and cheap!

This is what I recommend.  Should work perfectly for you.

You can also get cheap remanufactured versions of Garmin III+ and even Garmin V off of ebay.  Both work with Mapsource TOPO and the V even does pretty good routing.

I have an eTrex Vista (I think). Color screen. Holds all the roads within 150 miles of Pittsburgh (had to buy MapSource to download road data though). I bought it for my son to use to create a map of all the mtn bike trails in the local county park and it was perfect for the task. I take it with me sometimes when I'm going out exploring back roads and let it track my route so that I can figure out where I went (or am).

I have an ancient Magellan GPS 2000, I bought it in 1994 for $149. WhenI did my Mexico tour in 96...I used that. I still use it for hiking and hunting. Colour screens soak up battey power...mono screens are the way to go.

I have a Megellan Sportrack Pro..  Works great and you can pick them up on Fleabay for under 100.00.  If you want the color its 100-150.00ish.  I will hold enough Topo data for Bellingham to Oly for most of the populated areas. Other less populated areas like Eastern Washingotn you can hold most of that side of the moutains.  The big thing is memory the more data you want to hold the more memory you will need.  I think the Sportrack Pro has 32meg total.  Newer expensive ones have SD cards in them.

Check the sale ads here. I think Thunder 7 has a Magellan unit for sale.

It's not the destination, but the journey, that counts. A sport-tourer's ride between two points is seldom a straight line. He will often seek the most convoluted route possible.

If you get an eTrex, go for the Legend or the Vista so you can do Topo or Streets maps.

The baxic eTrex has one very big advantage over all the others.  It has from 50 to 100% better battery life.  Rember if your batteries die the thing is worthless to you.
