I'm sure they already had early registration for riders from last years rally (I had to drop out last year). I will register as soon as it open up for the rest of us. January 7th IIRC Wink

I had to drop out also due to starting a new job.  If you registered and paid last year, send the rallymaster an email.  My registration was done yesterday and I started buying navigation upgrades immediately.   Wink  Flag #339 will actually participate this year starting in Savannah, TN.

I'm about 100 miles closer to NY, but Savannah should be warmer earlier in the morning.  The plan is to leave after work on Wednesday and spend Thursday evening at the motel in Savannah doing my bonus routing.  Dinner will be with a bunch of friends who are also in the rally and then try and get some intense sleep.  We'll probably end up in NY for one of the bonii.   Lol

The Rally booked up in under 7 hours, but I managed to get a spot for the Savannah, TN spot. A quick scan of the starters names tells me it's going to be a very competitive rally this year. Let the games begin Smile

I'm starting from Savannah, TN.

I'm going to stay in Jackson, TN Thursday night along I-40 (Econo Lodge). There'll be a group of us who'll meet for dinner at the Logan's Roadhouse off I-40 at exit 80. There are several motels within one block of Logan's.

Howdy, Mr. H.  It'll be good to put your face with a name and make your acquaintance.  (I hang around at the MTF too)  Used to own a Trophy, if that helps pinpoint me over there.   Wink  I'll put the dinner site on my list of things to do.  My room is at the Comfort Inn in Savannah.

Some of the parts and pieces have trickled in late this week.  I've gotta wait for the new fuse box to show before starting the actual prep work.  Lots of rewiring for some of the stuff the PO did into a semblance of sanity and reliability.

It's always fun to clean up someone else's rat's nest of wiring! What kind of fuse block are you going to install?

I went with the Eastern Beaver PC-8.  http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Fuseboxes/PC-8/pc-8.html  Eight circuits, two switched and six unswitched.  It came pretty highly recommended and I have a bit of space under the GS tank to use it.  I added his fused power lead for it also.  Less than $100 delivered all totalled.  It's been like Christmas every day as the new toys show up via UPS, USPS and Fedex.   Lol

The PO did a pretty nice job of routing and stuff, but all the hot leads are on the battery and it's just too cluttered for my tastes.  I need a couple more power leads for the new Zumo, the new HID headlight kit and a dedicated heated gear circuit.  I'm losing one circuit for the trailer hitch lighting.  I am not pulling a trailer with it, so it's totally excess for now.

I had a blast last year and especially enjoyed meeting other participating STNers. Alas, this year my schedule is such that I knew I would be unable to attend so I did not even attempt to register. I must admit, though, to pangs of jealousy while reading this and the threads on the Cape Fear Yahoo group  Sad
Best of luck to everyone taking part this year - I'm looking forward to a return in 2012.

I have the same jealousy pangs. I ran the last three and knowing it was out there always made the winter easier to take. Not thinking about it in the snow feels weird now.   Sad

Getting close now.  The new Pilot Road 2 Metzeler Tourance tires go on in a couple weeks.  Today, I test the comms on an extended ride to check my endurance level after a loooong winter.   Lol   The Shoei sports a new Sena headset and the bike's got a Zumo 660 with a freshly refurbed 2720 for backup.  Spot mount is here for tracking and peace of mind.  The rally flags and info get mailed next week, I think.  I'm ready for some fun.

Got the new tires put on last night, along with pads and a new rear rotor.  Got a glitch in the Zumo power cord - it keeps kicking off bike power and onto the battery.  I think either I didn't get it grounded well or the power wire is flaky.  It'll get chased down this weekend.  The 2720 power cable came yesterday and it'll go on as well.

While I'm under the tank, the powerlet wires are being rerouted to give better access.  Two more weeks, fresh fluids and depart on the 14th for Savannah!  Just got the e-mail from Jim that I'm "Ready to Ride".  Damn straight, I am.   Lol

Is it time yet?  I just finished the full service, the two GPS' are hard wired, the SPOT is keyed into the CF1K and everything is go.  It even looks like the weather is going to cooperate.  Maybe.   Lol

I ran out to Chicago and Milwaukee last weekend to get some calluses started.  It's been a long, hard winter.

I rode up to the Moonshine lunch run, then over to Indianapolis, followed by a day of 2 lane all the way from Indianapolis to Nashville. (135 and 37 are good roads in that neck of the woods). My helmet headset shit the bed yesterday on the final stretch home...gonna have to replace that and I'm GTG...See you in Savannah (yamatech2003 on the CF1k yahoo group)

I ended up 10th out of the Savannah starters, and I was grateful to have finished.  As our Special Guest pointed out, I achieved all the things necessary for a successful rally:
1. I survived.
2. I finished.

Awesome time.

The weather kicked my butt on this rally.  I was happy to finish alive and at the  "top of the bell curve" for the NY starters.....Ed you would have been proud of me!!   Thumbsup

Perry Karsten

 Lol

I'm impressed with anyone who finished that one. I was worried about you guys.

Hi, Perry! (I scored you!!)

Chaz headed south (some conference for work), and I headed back to Baltimore. Passed through a debris deposit area from the NC tornadoes on 117, between 40 and 95. Big wadded pieces of aluminum sheet roofing and other pieces. Looked like a giant's handful of wadded candy wrappers and trash.

It was scary watching the Spotwalla and the weatherchannel at the same time. Big scary badweather blobs. A LOT of folks just bailed on their planned routes and headed for Wilmington and safety. Some even gave up and went home instead of coming to Wilmington.

Very cool to be scored by you....  I did not see "LionLady" on your name tag!

Yes....I was one of the many who bailed on my planned route.... Glad I did and finally put that mess behind.  Thought I had seen the end of the weather on my ride home but I ended up travelling through a Wind Travel Advisory in Michigan (very strong gusty winds but not nearly as intense as the storms south during the rally) and snow in Ontario.

I didn't realize that Mother Nature had a part in the planning this rally.  Man, I guess she can throw in a few curves... eh?

For the CapeFear, heavy rain is a given for pretty much ALL the riders at some point in their rides. Some get hit worse than others, depending on the luck of their planned rides and the whims of mother nature. Last year, a handful got nailed by severe storms that included hail in addition to strong winds.

On Saturday, guitardad had his gas mileage cut by about 20% battling strong headwinds on the final leg to Wilmington. Some dolt (rally-er) ran out of gas WITHIN SIGHT OF A GAS STATION and had the audacity to flag him down on the highway. Since the rules say all riders must give aid if a fellow is injured or in danger, he stopped. The guy wasn't in danger or hurt, just SOL.  Mad2

To add insult, a gust of wind blew guitardad's bike over as he was returning to get underway.

If I remember right, the rules don't require a stop for someone out of gas. At least, the Mason-Dixon rules exclude that one.

I'd never flag another rally rider down under those conditions. On the other hand, I can't imagine not stopping to help either, whether during a rally or not. In fact, I have done that during a rally. The other rider said he was fine and sent me back on my ride.

Bigok to Chaz for helping him out. I hope Clifford the Big Red Bike wasn't hurt in the blow over.

Yeah, those are the rules for all the rallies. Unfortunately, if someone waves their arms at you as you're riding toward them at 65mph, you assume they've got a serious problem. He didn't.  Rolleyes And, yeah, I would never flag another rally-er down because I made a dumb@ss mistake.

Heard during dinner that Dumbass got a ride from a state trooper to and from the gas station. He placed 28th, so at least he didn't profit from it. If he runs the Cape Fear again, he'll be in Jim Bain's sights.  Clifford is pretty badly scratched on the left side. Heavy wind gusts + the top case + aux tank + possibly short/bent side stand that added up to the tipover.

Yeah, scratched up sidecase and a pretty good gouge on the left side fairing, right at the "tip" that sticks out about handlebar high.  I've got touch-up paint, but I'm thinking this winter may be time for a complete repaint.  Imola Red FTW! Beerchug  As for dumba$$, he was definitely flagging us down for all he was worth. A rider on a solver ST1300 stopped, too, becasue he saw my bike on its side.  I tod him I was OK, but he helped me pick it up anyway.  Thanks!!!!!!!

Learned two things:  Next time I won't wait around to try to explain WHY I'm not riding down to the gas station to bring him back some gas   Twofinger  AND, I'm going to figure out how to lighten the load for the next rally.  Start with a tiny travel-size toiletry kit and a netbook to replace the laptop.
