Hey yall,

Just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself. I am 21 and have been riding for several years. This summer, after graduation, I was planning on doing a cross-country trip in June to see the Pacific for the first time. I have a FZ6 that I love to death. My dad wants to accompany me on the trip, although I am a little concerned considering he wants to do it on his 1978 XS1100.

I just wanted to say hello and I look forward learning some tips from you experienced folk.

 I think it's cool your dad wants to ride along. As long as the Yammie is in good shape it should be fine. Those are good ol' bikes.

You're finishing college and this is a special trip - so, what do you want?  
Maybe it's an independence trip that you'd rather do by yourself?  
But a mentor many times is good.   Surely fun both ways, but different.

I would love to have my dad along, the only thing worrying me is his bike doesnt do well in the rain. Last spring we were on a trip with a forecast of 65 degrees and sunny, of course it was really 50 and raining. Long story short, his engine eventually cut out as he rolled into a rest stop. We ended up having to ride 2up on the XS I was riding which was probably quite the sight as I am 6' 210. He is contemplating buying a newer bike for the trip and then selling it when we get back.

But man does Montana, Idaho and Colorado look like a lot of fun.

I'd encourage the newer bike purchase and invite him along. It'll make lasting memories for both of you

 Looks like maybe the wiring needs a bit of attention i.e. clean connections & dielectric grease. Not unusual for an older bike.

What year is your FZ6? I ride a first gen FZ1. Used FZ6s and first gen FZ1s are so cheap either would make a great bike for you dad. There is an FZ1 on the FZ1 Owners Association forum right now for $2000. If you decide to ride through california hit me me up. I should be able to get away from work for a few days of riding.

I couldn't imagine a better way of transitioning from one phase of your life to another than with such a trip...a great adventure!

Even better if you're able to share it with your Dad...you two could build memories that could the foundation fo a lifetime of shared experiences / memories.  Go for it!

(...but either upgrade the X11 or at least get her prepped / tuned and ready for the tour!)

I ride an '07. Initially, I had my heart set on an FZ1 but now I am happy with the FZ6. It does everything I need it to do.

Honestly, I am not sure what kind of bike my dad would want. He seems to only be interested in the bikes they only sell overseas. Maybe I will press him a bit more on the FZ1.

Compatible with your style bike would be the Bandit 1200.
These have bottomed out in depreciation so your dad won't suffer loss.
