I'm planning on riding to the top of Mount Evans on my way to the 2011 National this year.  Is this road worth riding?  I've seen it in a few ride reports and it looks good.  Plus, to be able to say I've ridden the highest paved road in North America is a plus.

Thoughts / comments / suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for the feedback.  I'll be taking on the road in mid June.  I might as well pack my Gerbings liner.   Bigok

I did it on the Sprint ST. 80 deg in Denver, 40 on top. There was a thunderstorm below me that went by. Later as i was coming down, it hailed and everyone was watch the big horn sheep while I was trying to navigate down the mountain. Was fun, beware of the altitude sickness.

It's a scenic ride for sure... this was last August, and it was chilly up top

I say "why not?" .. highest paved road in the US, so just worth it for that. Also, CO 103, aka Sqauw Pass road is good ride as well.

I'll tell you what, If you can handle the temps and the dark ride up (dark like the inside of a cow!), a sunrise from 14,000 ft is a sight to see.

Taken July 4th 2003 (with a truck group, no bikes at that point).

OK.  Based on the posts here and the PMs I have received, it appears this road WILL be on my list.  Thanks for all the replies and resources regarding this and other area roads!

Let me guess....you're hitting it BEFORE the rally?

I'm planning on hitting it AFTER the rally.

Yep.  I'm running a clockwise path through the heartland, up to Custer, and back via the U.P. of Michigan.

FYI

If all you want to do is run up, and back down, you don't need to pay the access fee. If you want to stop at the top and wander a bit, pay the 3 bucks (or whatever it will be for motorcycles next year). If you stop at the top and don't have that little ticket, it's a $50 fine.

Definitely worth the time. And yes, there are many great roads to get there...

Congrats on picking up the vfr (and hopefully you've learned about not running out of gas), let me know when and I'll head up with you...

Definitely worth the trip up.  Like others said it can get nippy up there any day of the year. Last time I went up there was a pothole just about at the top in the center of the road. Coming down a groundhog popped out of it just as I passed it. Ya don't need those kind of distractions on a curvy non guarded road.

If you succeed at Mt Evans, you might be ready for the bigger challenge of Mt Sunflower; the highest peak a couple hundred miles to the east.  Most people attack the south face their first time.  It's a guarantee you won't see the crowded parking lot you'll see at the top of Mt. Evans

Beware the frost heaves just before Summit lake. It's about 2/3 the way up and you're looking up at the backdrop of the lake.
Easy to miss and the heaves are suspension bottoming, bone jarring, and nasty.
