NM 152 Totally screwed up....
«

Darn county road workers just totally ruined NM152 From Hillsboro to San Lorenzo at least. Yesterday I rode up there to find the whole thing has that lousy slippery chip-seal all over it. Big gouges ,ridges, holes and a filet of gravel right down the middle of every apex. I called the road dept office in Silver City at 538-3316 and gave them my opinion. I suggest we drive these people nuts with calls until they stop this process. There was nothing wrong with this road at all last year that filling a few random potholes would not have fixed. This was a dangerous waste of money that may get some cyclist killed. At least be warned that there is no traction on this road like there used to be so be really careful.

Yeap... I had posted about that a while back, ruined one of my favorite roads in NM
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,58263.0.html
And not only is it chip-sealed, it's the worst chip seal job I've ever seen. I take it from your description it still has piles of gravel literally on the road and particularly in the corners

Grant Co. told me the real culprit is a hiway engineer named Trent Dolittle( 1-800-444-0745) who made this decision and those of all roads all over the state. After I called his office his assistant stated that they were "aware of problems with that road but did not have $$$ to fix it now". That is pretty damning evidence right there. We need to start a state -wide call in to this guy. There was nothing wrong with this road to start with. This guy has no clue about the traction needs of a motorcycle. He will put chip seal on all the mountain roads in this state if given the chance. Someone is going to get killed by this foolishness. Maybe we should get Russ Wideners # ready just in case. At any rate be careful on this road. Traction is iffy to non existant.

They had managed to do NM4 thru' the Jemez as well; not sure where it is these days but in September it was ... not pretty.

Hey you guys, another approach.... Gov Martinez has a new budget saving hot line. I took the approach that tons of chip-seal is being put down where it is not needed and if we need a road section fixed we should just fix that section...and not to do this wastes $$$$. Let's get active in this state. It's called wastenmgov.com .

UPDATE.... The phone call worked! I rode up there yesterday and they had brushed off 152, rollered the surface and put new lines on the road! I will make sure to thank Jaime at the state road commission on Monday.Justn, you might want to call them about NM4. Perhaps you will get an equal response. This means Jaime got a crew on the road within 3 days. Great response time.

Amazing, still sucks that it's chip sealed, but hopefully they cleaned it enough that it's safely ride-able. As to NM4, I haven't actually ridden that road in a few years, and don't even live in NM.

If it's still that way when I get up there next, I'll definitely be calling.
I do live in NM, and while I'm not actually an American, I don't think they'll check.

Jaime never asked me where I lived so I don't think that matters. I do think you guys SHOULD call just to let them know of your dis-pleasure of the practice of putting chip seal on ANY MOUNTAIN ROAD. He was very supportive but I think he needs to hear it from more than 1 rider.

Hah.
You'd be amazed at the number of places that DON'T ask. Even 10 years ago, when my accent was MUCH stronger.

You shouldn't be surprised Expatbrit..... People are so dumb in this country they think New Mexico is a foreign country. They probably think you are from Georgia or the South somewhere (bad slam I know), or that your Union Jack is the Confederate flag ( an even worse slam on the UK).
