I believe that's FR 26, not CR 26
Definitely not looking street bike friendly
Ok - GoogleMaps said "CR"
As for not being street bike friendly, bubba's not on a street bike...

I couldn't make up my mind so I rode them both. Took 14A from Cody to Lovell to Burgess Junction. At Burgess Junction I took 14 to Shell, then turned around and rode back to Burgess Junction. It ended up being a ~60mile round trip detour that was well worth it. You could do that from either side, (14 then 14a and turn around) but it seemed shorter the way I did it and you can stop for a break in Shell.

Bubba. Before I spend time mapping, did you want some dirt routes? I won't be able to map until I get home this weekend.
So we're in Custer again this year? Time goes fast. Seems like just a bit ago, I had a shinny new VFR and was heading down to Custer.

I would love some dirt routes David. We won't be riding with serious offroad tires/knobs but some good offroad would be great !!
BTW ... we have the previous week, likely riding from the 6th so have lots of time to ride "to" Custer. After, we will just blast on home.

Okay, so in my typical fashion, I have bitten off more than I can chew. So, we'll see how this goes. It may take some more time than this weekend to finish.
Starting, here is South West Montana. The green routes, I have personally been on with a motorcycle, the yellow routes I have included on what I consider good information.
A. Maugruder Corridor. This forrest service road goes from Darby MT to Elk City ID, crossing several mountian ranges with wilderness areas on either side. Near the Montana side the road winds through wooded drainages with streams near the road
A. Maugruder Corridor. The western part of the road winds over several passes and is quite rocky in places. Some of the overlooks allow views over miles of forest and mountian valleys.

Depending on your route, check out Makoshika State Park in eastern Montanna, kind of a miniture Badlands.
Just outside of Glendive.
If you are in the area, Teddy Roosevelt National Park in SW ND is pretty interesting. I camped in the park near Medora and rode the scenic loop.

Head south of Missoula on US93, the first part is boring and crushed with traffic, but once you get past Hamilton, things clear out. Either go across on MT38 (38 may or may not be paved, it wasn't 5yrs ago), or continue on down to MT43 (worth going past 43 down to Carmen and turn around and come back, the pass is fun to ride) Then take 278 through Wisdom, and on to Dillon.
US-93 is, indeed, a bit of monotonous drone from Missoula to Darby before it rocks. Never
experienced that much traffic out there although compared to US-12 west of Lolo, yes.
Friend of mine tried Eastside Highway from Florence to Hamilton, but said he kept getting
stuck behind slower traffic and the views were no better than US-93.
While I haven't tried it, a friend of mine did, and that'd be I-90 east of Missoula to Drummond
where you cut south on SH-1 aka US-10A to Georgetown Lake then Anaconda to I-90. Might
be popular with tourists.

Take 41 to Twin Bridges, then MT287 to Ennis (you'll pass through
Virginia City
-a neat old gold mining town that's been restored) Continue on US287 all the way to West Yellowstone (you'll pass next to
Earthquake Lake
From West Yellowstone, pass through the park, and out the NE entrance, go over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge (if it is open, worth checking before you go), turn around and head back over again, and on the other side take the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. Stop at the Sunlight Bridge over Sunlight Creek (no services, just a high bridge over a deep narrow canyon), continue on over Dead Indian Pass, and down into Cody. From Cody either take US14 or 14A to Dayton WY(both go through the Bighorn Mts, I've been on 14A, it was great, I've heard good things about 14, so if you can, do both)
From Dayton, the options are limited to either US14/16 or I-90 to Moorcroft, but there is a neat side trip to Devil's Tower (of Close Encounters fame) From there US85 is good up to Deadwood, or you can just continue on 16 to Custer
Best yet, I was going to suggest you go over LOLO from West to east, and skip Missoula, met up with Mrs Bird and her driver somewhere around Lolo.
Head south on 93 to Hamilton, 38 west out of Hamilton is gravel (I believe), at Anaconda, head South on a poorly paved road to Wisdom, hook up again w/ the Birds who will be taking a very nice ride south over 93 to 43. From there to West Yellowstone via Dillon and Virginia City ("ghost town") Look at Old Faithful, then hear to Beartooth/ Red Lodge / Chief Joseph back to Cody. (not too much to see in Yellowstone if you live in the Rockies already). Cross over Bighorns (either route is cool, we usually do one route there, and another back.).
From Sheridon to Gillette over 16, then Newcastle and Custer.
Of course depending on time, you could head south from Lolo, down 93 and head into the Sawtooths., Sun Valley etc. Coming back from Colorado, I saw many many roads heading into the mountains that really made me lust for an KTM Adventure, etc. Lots of mining and ghost towns out thataway.

PS Can anyone tell me which leg is best - 14 or 14A - I can never decide which one to take. Spent some time at this sign...
I like going EAST through Greybull, that's the one Dante has a photo of. Going West, back over Lovell gives some AMAZING panoramas of the descent out of the Big Horns. You look down on these tiny little hills in the distance, 1/2 later your in those hills, but they aren't so tiny anymore.
BTW, do NOT stay at the first motel in Sheriton coming from the west,......

Still don't know if
Skalkaho Pass
is paved (MT38) but it does look interesting. Another option is to head 10 or so miles east of Missoula and take Rock Creek/County road 102 and follow it to MT38 on the other side of Skalkaho Pass. I know that
Rock Creek
is
not
paved, but it runs along a five star/blue ribbon trout stream if you have a yen for some fishin'. It is also a beautiful drive
