I did that on the S1000RR, eighteen months before delivery.  $500 refundable deposit, why not?  It's not like it was doing me any good in the bank.

I'm with you there. Plus it gives it time to get the bugs worked out.

yeppers, that's pretty much what I've done on two RTs now.  got the first on in Nov '01 for $9400 with 22K on the ODO.  Put a bunch-O-miles on it up until Nov. '09 then decided to part it out and put the money toward another one with fewer miles.  Waited patiently for nearly a year when I spotted my   "new" one on IBMWR.  It's a 2000 that only had 12K on the clock and in near showroom condition.  Got it for 3400 less than I paid for the '98.  Heck for that matter, I guess I did the same thing on my 2000 R1200C.  Bought it in October of '04 with 12.7K for $7K and now have over 96K on it.  Ain't life grand!??

The GT was listed at the Toronto show in December at $24,100 (Can).  I talked with one of the sales staff at the January Toronto show who told me the GTL was ~$27,000 (Can) and that all 170 bikes slotted for the Canadian market have deposits on them.  I'm sure the people that are putting early money down are being told a price (+/- accessories).  BMW are still taking deposits but no guarantees that you'll get the bike unless someone cancels or they release more from other markets.  Go fig.  I like the bike and some of the reviews it's getting but I am always leery of the 1st couple of years of a new model.

Because you asked... you are locking yourself in to the msrp rather than allowing demand dictate the actual selling price of the bike.  In other words, you can be paying more for the bike than necessary without even knowing it.
I know a few guys who pre-ordered 1997 CBR1100XX's because there was so much hype about how fast it was, they had to have it.  They paid MSRP, which in reality is $1500-$2500 more that everyone else paid for the bike.  Conversely I know a guy who went to the NYC show, saw the first gen R1 and immediately went to the Yamaha dealer and ordered one.  They actually called him later and told him what the price was and he agreed.  In his case, the R1 sold well and there really weren't any "Deals" so he didn't get burned.

Anybody who absolutely wants one and doesn't care how much the price is.  This is the basis for our consumer society.  Make something they can't resist and sell it to them as soon as possible and as many as possible.

You can also put some money down at the Triumph dealer on a 2012 Trophy which isn't even out yet.
