Looking for a nice small town to use as a base camp for 2-4 days of riding Austria.  We'll be coming from near Munich, want to see Salzburg and Berteschgaden, and eventually heading over the Grosglockner on our way to Dolomites. Ideally there should be several good riding roads nearby.

Taking a first stab at the map, the towns of Ruhpolding and Siegsdorf looks pretty convenient.  Easy access to most of what we want to see, and an easy "get used to it" ride from the rental place near Munich.

Any better suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks!

I hate you.  Twofinger

Sounds like another dream tour. Take lots of pics, I really enjoyed the photos of that last big Europe/Alpine loop you did.

Can't help with lodgings where you are asking, but can help lodgings and routes nearer Glosglockner and the Dolomites. Hotel Molltaller is superb with a biking owner that knows every road in the Austrian Alps.

Stayed there for 3 days in Aug 2010. 49 euros / night. Superb and a Bargain.

The Molltaler is a mighty fine hotel that is super clean and tidy, affordable at 49 Euros, has terrific food and very friendly, helpful staff. The owner (Enrico) is Italian/Austrian, an avid biker, gregarious personality with an affinity for all things biking, rides an Aprilla, loves Ducati’s and as nice a person you will ever meet – plus he knows all the good local roads, not just the Grossglockner. The hotel is found as you climb out of Iselsberg and before Winklern and the Grossglockner Pass. Every room has a good view of the valley and surrounding mountains and, like the Evaldo Hotel in Arabba there’s a bike garage with power washer, tools, hydraulic lift, a couple of bike stands and other essential miscellaneous stuff to be had.

I stayed in Bad Reichenhall, a very pleasant town, for 3 days. There's a brewery there   http://www.buergerbraeu.com/  with a good restaurant, good beer, beer garden, and also  nice rooms upstairs. Prices were reasonable and the rooms were a cut above your average gasthof. Covered secure moto parking right by the kitchen. Easy walk to the zentrum. I enjoyed my stay there.

What part of Austria, because one base came won't do all of Austria.

Ken, if you want to visit Salzburg for a day, why not just stay there for a couple of nights...ride in from Munich which is a short ride, spend the next day in Salzburg, and then move on. Pension Herbert in Salzburg. Take the #5 bus into town - ten minutes.

Have you done the north west of Slovenia and Italy and Austria along those borders? The Grossglockner can be used to get there.

Great motorcycle friendly accomodations: Gasthof Winkler in Tröpolach at the base of the Nassfeld Pass. There is so much to ride from there.

Have you done Monte Zoncolan, Lago di Sauris?

We're mostly looking at the area around Salzburg and the Bertesgaden, and access to the passes going south into the Dolomites.  We're trying to minimize hotel changes, so 2 or 3 days at the same place is a plus.  The Pension Herbert looks good, hadn't really thought of staying IN Salzburg.  Close enough to the places we're thinking of seeing.

Maybe move the 3rd night to Tröpolach for a better launch to the Dolomites...

Nope, haven't been to any of those places...

The Dolomites are too far for a day ride there and back from the Salzburg area.

I stayed in Hotel Olympia in Arabba last summer. €49 per night, breakfast and a four-course dinner, nice rooms and garage parking.

Yes, I know.  We will be moving home base from Salzburg area to arabba.  Stayed last time at hotel Mesdi, will use them again.
