Anyone have info on Rentals in TX. I would prefer a small Jap Bike but most of the Rentals are Hogs or Beemers.
Houston is the preferred location - but I would also consider Austin.
Looking to ride in Mexico for a couple of weeks to San Miguel de Allende and other points Southwest in the Highlands - so any suggestions appreciated.

TIA

I'm pretty sure you can't take a rented vehicle into mexico.

(This is one of those "facts" I seem to remember from "somewhere."  Hopefully, one of the know-it-alls will be along to soon to confirm or correct.)

If I was desperate a Sporter might work but lockable luggage would be a problem - besides the fact Hogs for some strange reason are top of the "ripped off" bike list.
And what the hell you doing trolling Region 2??  ;-)
Send me your E Mail addy  - I lost it..

Are you seriously considering touring Mexico right now? It has overtaken South Africa as the murder capital of the world. I know some Mexican nationals here in Texas that won't even go back home to visit, and they are from there. I am asking sincerely....

In the early stages of gathering info right now. Will definitely be touring at some point - whether by Bike or cage. I do have concerns of being able to leave the bike parked in towns with hardbags and not getting stuff ripped. Yes I've heard of the violence - but I'm thinking that the border is the worst - if I can get thru there quickly it shouldn't be too bad.  You only live once and in my case being an old bastid I don't have a lot of years left..

I had dinner tonight with a Latina girl friend that has family in the valley (Texas border area), one is a lawman in the area. She was telling me about friends that went down to visit family in Mexico and got robbed and carjacked. And she had a few other similar stories about violence in Mexico recently.

I noticed this article earlier this evening and thought I would share it with you, it is about violence in areas other than the border:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_drug_war_mexico

I too will only live once, that is why I try to avoid needless life threatening situations, cause I know this is the only life I will have.

I have heard that Peru has amazing rides.

Pete ST, 5 yrs ago I would have agreed with you that the border problems were all that you would encounter. Now I say you have to avoid most of the interior also. The Narco Trafs want to control the whole country and are into tourist areas like St Miguel De Allende and Santiago, Acapulco now also. They think as little of killing you and taking all your goods as they would of killing a dog. If you were wanting goods would you not go where the rich American/ European tourists like to go to take them? Only a matter of time before Cancun and P Vallarta go down too. This is a war zone and the govt forces are losing! How about Cairo...Egypt is probably just as stable. I live 30 mins from the border in NM.People that have gone there for years see the danger in this. If you must go have your will in order. This is no joke for your family.

Trust me, I'm an Intelligence Analyst, you DO NOT want to go riding anywhere in Northern Mexico right now. More people are being killed there every day than in Iraq or Afghanistan!  Beside I don't think there is a rental company that will let you rent a bike to ride into Mexico.
