My friend Just found a 2001 1200 Bandit for 2,600.  He says it's in excellent shape for it's age.   Anything he should be watching out for?  I have no experience with Bandits so I'm asking the experts in everything.

Is it an oil burner or did it get the piston fix? Or is it one of the few that got a good batch of pistons at the factory?

Is it naked or an S model? S model has a workable half-fairing.

Has it been taken care of? If so it should be as reliable as a stone fence.

KBB sez $2,345 for a naked, $2,510 for an S model (retail) for clean bikes in excellent condition

Hmm..looks like the price he was given is a little high.  I have no idea if it had it's pistons replaced since I have not talked to the owner yet.   Was there a recall or was it something that owners just forked out the cash for?

Like I said, I know nothing about the Bandit except for everyone who has one seems to love it.  Just don't want to see a friend get screwed.

There was a batch of badly machined pistons that got installed in a lot of '01 & some '02 1200s. I don't think there was an official recall but a service bulletin was issued that alerted dealers of the problem. If your Bandit smoked and consumed a lot of oil and you took it in to the dealer they would replace the slugs free of charge.

They are damned useful bikes.

Good info.  I'll ask the owner when I get to see the bike and I'll make sure to look for any signs of smoking.    My buddy really wants the bike but I don't want to see him get taken.  He's been lost since he sold his Seca 750.   Man that thing was old, but still ran really well.

Lol Truf! Bigok A little steep on the price, but if it's in real good shape, and doesn't burn oil, I wouldn't feel too cheated. Wink
