In July I wrecked my GL-1200 by being a bit too sporting on too-tempting a sunny day on a mountain road. I use GL-1200s for commutasaurus duty, as they fit the bill of carrying what I need for work.
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,55370.0.htmlI was originally going to part it out, and purchased a nice 85 LTD to fill the void left behind by the 84 Interstate.
Well the 85 is a great bike, but I just can't bear to part out my 84. So, I'm going to take care of a few more niggling little bits and the 85 will be for sale soon.
I've been trying and trying to find a Senior Gray (hate the name) upper fairing but have failed. I don't have painting skills and will only buy one in the correct colour.
I did however, find a man locally parting out a 1987 in Amethyst Gray metallic, and purchased everything from him that was "painted". So I'm going to change the colour of the bike and move forward with the rebuild.
Here's my partial damage list so far from the 70mph impact to boulders:
Forks - damaged but repairable
Front wheel - totally wrecked
Front axle - bent
TripleTree - threads on center stripped - unusable
Upper fairing - totally "busticated" on RHS
Mirrors - you can guess
Windshield - did it's job.
TopBox - top lid pretty scraped on RHS
Right hand pannier lid - scraped very well.
Crash bars - did their job - almost worn through
Ignition switch - damaged - needs replacement
Clutch lever - bent / scraped
Front Brake Master - scraped
Handlebar grips - you can guess
Sorry for the CrappyPhone picture, but here's the Phoenix in the depths of the ashes:
