Arghhhh!

So I have a 765T mounted to the bike and am using a RAM power cord to power the thing off of the bike.  I have two issues...three really.

1.) The power connection is on the bottom of the GPS and the cord seems to fall out a lot due to vibration.  Is there a way around this (another method) or is this just a design issue I can't get around?

2.) The GPS constantly reboots itself

3.) The GPS sometimes thinks it's plugged into a computer and tries synching itself with a non-existent hard drive.

Has anyone else had these issues and figured out a fix?

Thanks!

I would suspect that the vibration is what it causing all the issues. I am not too familiar with your particular unit but I am guessing that it uses a miniUSB connector for power and data transfers. These connectors do not handle vibration well.

I hate to say it but this is why they have the Zumo line.

I had the same kind of things happen with an aftermarket adapter and my 760. When using the Garmin mount on my windshield it never happened. I've since switched to a Zumo 450. The 760 was an interim replacement so I dont use it on my bike any more.

I ran a Nuvi 760 with a RAM mount and a Powerlet power cord (hardwired to the Eastern Beaver PC-8).  There is a trick to fooling the Nuvi into recognizing that the power cord is not a computer synch-up.  Powerlet included the instructions with the cord.

If memory serves me right (the Nuvi died last year due to the power switch breaking):  From a powered off, unconnected state, hold the Nuvi power switch full on for a few seconds until a service menu appears.  Plug in the mini-usb, it should beep acceptance.  Then, leaving it connected, turn the Nuvi power off and back on - all should be well.  It is/was a total pain in the butt.

Never had the power cord come off while riding - of course the RT rides pretty smooth and I stick to pavement the vast majority of the time.  YMMV.

don't use the USB port - the 765T is NOT designed to be powered from there - clip on the mount that came with it and plug the 12v cord in the side - it doesnt fall out, but it is a PITA to connect and unconnect when you have to get the GPS off the ram mount

also mine was rebooting - seems like it was the 8gb sd card with all the music on it that was pissing it off. Was told to use a smaller card, no problems now.

oh, btw, the plug is 12V, no converter in there, you can direct wire it to your fusebox or add an inline fuse and wire it to the battery.

Thanks for the great replies.  Yes I know the 765T is not made for the bike but since my 2730 died (and I can't find a refurbished unit) it will have to make do.

I may try using the stock power cord because the mini USB port is not working out so well.

I think what you are experiencing is a Kharma issue.  You see, you state you live in Lexington, KY but are displaying OU for your pictures. The gods aren't happy. I'm sure if you changed you pic to UK all of your problems would go away........  I'm just saying!

The 700 series won't CHARGE from the USB port connection but it will RUN all day long from it.

I have the 770 and had the same issues with the USB connection working its way out so now I just use the regular power connection when riding.  Other than that, no issues with it on the bike in three years.

I've had the 765T on my bike for 2 years now and have not experienced any of those issues.  I have it hard wired and take it off the bike at most every stop.  No issues so far.

I bought a 3rd party 12V cord from Amazon.  Cut about a foot long and put an SAE connector on it.  I have the wire for/from my batt tender jr. running under the tank w/ it's SAE connector between the tank and the steering stem.  On both my bikes.
Oh, and I ground down just a bit of my RAM cradle so I can connect the (short) cable and then put the GPS into the cradle.  Makes life much easier.

I have the 765 and have a sporatic problem with it rebooting.  Very rarely does it but when it does, it will for that day.  Then, nothing for weeks.

I have an aquabox to keep the unit dry and use the usb to charge it via a powerlet.  The usb charger stays put due to the aquabox.  No issues at all.  If you want, I'll take a pic and show.  PM me.

Here is a link to the auqabox.

I really like the 765 besides these shortfalls.  It is a great motorcycle gps unit.

Here's how I did my Nuvi 765 power cable and cradle.
Here's the cable w/ an SAE conn - it may be a bit over a foot long.
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/gallery/4/2196_18_03_11_4_56_35.jpeg

Here's the front. You can see where I ground off just a bit of the cradle under the right bolt
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/gallery/4/2196_18_03_11_4_57_18.jpeg

Here's a back view.  The gray is silver sharpie I used to mark how much to grind
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/gallery/4/2196_18_03_11_4_58_07.jpeg

Here it is with the wire in the clip and the clip in the cradle.
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/gallery/4/2196_18_03_11_4_58_55.jpeg
The process is:
Connect the clip to the GPS.  Mount the cradle to the bike.  Run the power wire thru the cradle and connect it to the clip.  The orange spot makes it easier to connect the wire to the clip.
Put the GPS into the cradle.

Thread wake up call!
Just picked up the 765T and believe I am reading that the 18 pin wire is 12 volt? No converter?
Hope so - would save me some money.
