I sense you need more info...

My intent is to paint a dot on the road, that will be passing cagers,  apx. 100 yards before my actual physical arrival. I'm working with a 200mw laser from China (50 bux). Fo sho, it's strong enough you definitely don't want any direct beam to eyeball contact. I'm thinking mounted under my headlight with a downward angle, there's no chance of even collecting a side-view mirror reflection for any cagers...

Eh, not fully implemented yet, but wiring and testing from 12v power-source has been completed...

5 foot view

50 foot view

100 Yard view

I see some driver get distracted by the light, crash and sue you.

Bump up the laser intensity, and destroy all obstacles.

Cool!  And when you corner hard, you can blind oncoming drivers and send them careening right into your path!

Sanity check - when people do this when they see you coming - rethink.

I can predict with absolute certainty that you will not be able to avoid crashing when you run over all the cats that will chase that laser!   Lol

So you want drivers concentrating on funny green dot 100 yards ahead of you instead of on you or what's in front of them?  Headscratch

Cagers are distracted enough already methinks, and the ones that are truly distracted ain't gonna notice your marker. Those that do aren't gonna understand. They'll just be like "WTF izzat?" Lol

Some, probably many, will immediately drive right over it.  Either intentionally or by target fixation.

Yeah, this will be used in lane-splitting situations. My thought is that the ones that 'do' notice getting passed by a green dot on the roadway will look around for a source and perhaps make room for me when I actually arrive...

But Hey, it is what it is, a wacky experiment.

Any other predictions of the outcome of this experiment?

Zero effect?

Pied Piper Kitteh Parade?

Mass death and carnage?

Arrested by homeland security and sent to Guantanamo?

Maybe not that bad, but I'm sure any LEOs that notice won't be amused. I've known more than one person who got in trouble for "having fun" with lasers.

Yeah, I've done a little bit of research on 'laser laws'. The one we all know, point it at an aircraft, you're likely going to federal prison. Some states have laws on the books for pointing it at a leo. Of course pointing it directly at the operator of a motor-vehicle is also a big no-no, can't remember exactly which states have specific laws enacted already.

I'm pretty sure there's no specific law 'yet' prohibiting pointing a laser at the roadway from a moving vehicle. For sure, if caught in the act, I'm sure there's 'something' they can figure out to write me for... Shrug

Yeah, I think gunsight lasers are typically < 5mw. Mine at 200mw is maybe 50 times more powerful. It's still visible in full sunlight, but perhaps still not bright enough to really be 'noticed'. At night-time it may well be too friggin bright. My commute includes both day and night riding, so we'll see...

I am confident that you'll forget to un-deploy it, having is shine into the mirror of someone in front of you, or, as others said, into oncoming traffic when you corner.

While YOU may know that the lil green dots means you will be there in a moment, no one else will . . . commo only works when both ends are expecting it, and understand.

I'm VERY certain that you should start saving now for your lawyer. No matter whether there is a law specifically regarding your proposed usage, you WILL have to attempt to explain it to the 5-0, and you WILL end up having to pay out for citations, or court costs, or legal representation to mitigate this goofiness' effect on your license.

Why would you offer yourself up as a sacrificial lamb for no good reason? Really? If you ask to be harassed, you shouldn't be surprised when you get what you ask for.

Can laser light be "diffused" by a lens to make a wider, harmless light beam with limited range?

That could let you project a bright "spot" onto the road that only goes X yards ahead of you and would otherwise pose no threat if someone was to glimpse at the light itself.

Add on the fancy movement controller so you can make it shine words or pictures ahead of you.  That can eliminate the communication problem.  Then you can also rent your bike out to local bands as a portable concert laser show.
