Cheap rain cover for Bandit?
«
on:
April 05, 2011, 11:59:00 AM »
I just bought an '01 Bandit 1200 and, unfortunately, it's going to live outside this summer. Anyone got a line on a cheap rain cover, either a brand or a store to go for, for storing it outside, but sheltered. Doesn't have to deal with high winds, I just want to keep the rain off it. Cheap is good for now as I'll probably replace it before the end of the season with a better quality one.
Many thanks.

Don't bother with cheap. It is always a waste of money. Check out the Dowco Guardian line. A bit pricey, but mine is now 3 years old and still works fine.

You do get what you pay for in this world. There is some crap out there. I am content with my Nelson Rigg I got from Motorsports in Auburn but I only use it maybe 5 times a year.
Need I say.....
You KNEW that was coming.

I completely agree with you guys that you get what you pay for but right now price is my number one driving criteria. Even if I only get one season out of it before it's shredded or whatever, that's all I want it for - to keep it dry while it's being left outside (which it will be 24/7 - I simply have no other choice). Hopefully, in the very near future, quality will return to my top purchasing criteria, but that's just not where things are at the moment.
Pick up the bike on 16 April. Riding gear should arrive soon after that.

Thanks, Blunder. I hadn't even thought of JC Whitney.
I'll also go to Motosport in Auburn and see what they have.
Cheers, guys!

If you really want to save money, go to Home Depot and buy some Tyvek and sew it up. You would actually wind up with a dmaned good rain cover for about 10 bucks and an hour or so at a sewing machine.

Now there's an interesting idea. My dad's wife is an ace with a sewing machine, too.

Tyvek is pretty amazing stuff. Over at Hammock Forums, quite a few people have made camping tarps out of Tyvek. You could also go buy your own PU coated ripstop nylon, or silicone impregnated nylon (silnylon). Any of those options and you could get the materials pretty inexpensively.

does Tyvek let moisture breathe out through it? One thing that was brought to my attention is that without vents in a cover, the moisture just hangs around under the cover and rusts the fasteners and stuff like that. Makes sense as I had a Harley in a garage that was not well ventilated at all and it got all fuzzy after a couple of weeks in there.

I like this Trackside cover from Cycle Gear. Two years and still in good shape but it leads an easy life.
http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=&L2=&L3=&L4=&item=MYT_BH04-0015_G
It pulls double duty in the garage at home and outside at work. It isn't water proof-ish like the Dowco Guardian so I wouldn't recommend it if you're expecting it to keep the bike dry. It is vented though.

Yes, Tyvek is breathable. Here is DuPont's link to their page on its use as an automotive cover:
http://www2.dupont.com/Tyvek/en_US/uses_apps/covers/index.html
. It is also why it is the primary building wrap for residential construction as well, as it does let moisture breathe out through the fabric.

Thanks for the advice gang. While I liked the idea of making one myself, I couldn't touch the price of a cheap product online. Even buy the Tyvek raw material was going to cost nearly twice of the one that I found. So, I've got a cheap one coming my way, which is good, because it poured like hell last night. Really looking forward to getting it covered now!

Watch Craigslist. I've bought a couple covers off there.

I might. Who knows? Hasn't happened yet but that doesn't mean always won't.
No, the point was, what good is a wet, rainy picture on a gray, drizzly day?
